Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.549639 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3516567. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549639). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program.Bring your best espressivo and plan to rehearse the many subtle dynamic changes.Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano. Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1259267 Composed by Alexander Liebermann. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Score and part. 19 pages. Abundant Silence #852539. Published by Abundant Silence (A0.1259267). SONATA FOR ALTO SAXOPHONE AND PIANO, BY ALEXANDER LIEBERMANNFOR ALTO SAXOPHONE AND PIANO, ADVANCED, 12 PAGES“The Saxophone Sonata by Alexander Liebermann is a good example for subtle storytelling in contemporary music. In a unique style that, to my ears, perfectly reflects his Paris, Berlin, and New York background, Alexander gives the performers the opportunity to unfold their full potential by letting them express a broad variety of moods and colors. Thus, the listeners are taken into an eclectic ‘short story’ – a story that is remembered for a long time.â€â”€ Johannes Ernst, Saxophonist“Alexander Liebermann’s Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is a great new addition to the saxophone’s recital repertoire. Idiomatically written – both in terms of style and technique – it is kept in a concise rhapsodic one-movement form and offers a well-balanced and contrasting display of drama, lyricism, and virtuosity. In the best sense of the word, it is a cool piece with big city flair. It is modern, but accessible. It has hints of jazz, but explores such colors with class and refinement. It is fun to play and thrilling to listen to.â€â”€ Henning Schröder, Saxophonist.

Published by TJHoltMusic (A0.1021612). I was inspired to compose the Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 4 towards the end of the Snow Pond Composer’s Workshop that I attended in the summer of 2017. I was compelled even further upon learning that the classical saxophone repertoire is limited. This work presented a challenge, as this is the first work I have composed for the saxophone. The first movement resembles a traditional Sonata-Allegro form, with the first theme being inspired by Petrouchka by Igor Stravinsky. All of the themes in this sonata are presented as the movement progresses. The second movement is slow and lyrical, based on quartal harmonies and tonal ambiguity as well as a varying accompanying passage. The third movement is a short, yet frantic interlude based on augmented arpeggios. Henri Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto serves as an inspiration for the fourth movement, in terms of its spontaneous character.I. Allegro con gioiaII. Andante AppassionatoIII. InterludeIV. This work was composed for and premiered by Dariusz Samol at The Festival of New Music in Szamotuly, Poland in 2004. The American premiere was given by Joe Murphy at Mansfield University in 2005. The opening movement uses a rhythmic first theme followed by a lyrical second theme that has a jazz flavor over a walking bass line. The development section uses motives from the first theme only and the recapitulation states the themes in reverse order. The second movement alternates between a dramatic statement and a lyrical melody with lush harmony. The last movement is in a modified rondo form with a lot of rhythmic drive and chromaticism.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.587805 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by David McKeown. Classical,Concert,Standards. Score and part. 9 pages. David McKeown #4979349. Published by David McKeown (A0.587805). Adagio Cantabile is the second movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.8, named by his publisher, the Sonata Pathetique. This example of Eighteenth Century marketing was successful! The Sonata was a hit with both critics and the buying public and did much to establish the young composer’s reputation. This arrangement transcribes the piano score as a Solo for Alto Saxophone with Piano accompaniment. There is a separate solo part included with the score. The full length youtube performance is the clarinet version of this arrangement.Soloists at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are mostly straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing with subtle tempo changes. Since the main melody is played by the alto saxophone, the piano part is easier than the original. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes. There are many more top quality arrangements and compositions by David McKeown for you to browse at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/david-mckeown/6203

This sonata is in many ways a continuation of my exploration of the interface between the serious and the popular in music. An exciting and accessible work, it comprehensively demonstrates the technical capabilities of either instrument. In addition, the characteristic melodies contained within the piece ably demonstrate the lyrical capacity of the alto sax or clarinet.

Concertino was composed during 2009 at the request of Dr. Andy Wen and premiered by him at the Region 4 NASA Conference in April 2011. This piano reduction of the band parts was completed in 2011. The work is in three movements. The first movement is in an abbreviated sonata form in a spirited Vivace tempo. The first theme group consists more of motives rather than an actual theme and is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band. The second theme group has a lyrical saxophone line over a staccato bass line. The development begins quietly with the treatment of a syncopated idea from the second theme using a trio of solo saxophone, timpani and euphonium. After further development, a variant of the first theme group returns. The recapitulation consists only of first theme group ideas before ending with a brief coda. The second and third movements are performed with out pause between them. While the first movement was created during 2009, the second and third movements are a reworking of an earlier work by the composer for alto saxophone and piano soloists with orchestra. A rubato Lento theme containing many triplets that is accompanied by lush harmony begins the second movement. It is followed by a more scale-wise melody that is treated contrapuntally. Both these ideas develop during the movement leading to a strong climax before returning to a quiet conclusion. The third movement is an Allegro, once again with a rhythmic opening idea that changes meter often, and a more lyrical second idea with scale-wise passages as counterpoint. The development of these ideas leads to a cadenza for the solo saxophonist, followed by a coda that brings the composition to a rousing conclusion.

Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549015). Alto Sax version of Moment Musicaux, Op. 94 (D. 780) No. 3 by Franz Schubert, published in 1828. Duration: 1:53 Score 6 pg. 54 ms. Alto Sax 1 pg. Piano part 3 pg. One of Schubert's most well-known pieces. This is an effective recital encore due to its brevity and range of expression. Could work well for a variety of occasions: wedding receptions, church services (Easter), and anniversaries. It seems like a pleasant dance, unlike some previous dance music. Schubert improvised these dances at parties for his friends.  Although conceived on-the-fly, these dances are the work of a genius. Composers have similarly elevated dance music to artistic status. As a result, they freed it from the original purpose of dancing. Certainly, the older masters used the dance forms as vehicles for complex treatments. Here, however, Schubert retains the dance-like quality while finally expressing his innermost thoughts and emotions. The dance is certainly filled with a doleful expression, yet the texture remains even more light and refined. Therefore, to perform these with sensitivity we probably need to use a light but accurate touch. The accompaniment pattern needs to be crisp and delicate – probably even in the more forceful parts. The piano pedal should also be used very carefully so as a result not to blur the outline. Instead, it should contribute to the dynamic quality of the piece. Schubert Franz Schubert (1797–1828) was, in fact, a famous Austrian composer. Moreover, he composed during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. Schubert was comparatively prolific. He wrote more than 600 secular vocal works, seven symphonies, and, correspondingly, a massive amount of piano and chamber music. Critics agree, as a matter of fact, that his most famous works include his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (also known as the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759 (Unfinished Symphony), the last sonatas for piano (D. 958–960), and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795) and Winterreise (D. 911). Education Schubert was furthermore a musical child prodigy. He studied violin with his father as well as piano with his older brother. In addition, when Schubert was eleven he studied at Stadtkonvikt school, where he became familiar with the orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and likewise Beethoven. In due time he left school and returned home where he studied to become an educator; nevertheless, he continued studying composition with Antonio Salieri. Performance Eventually, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performer. This appointment straightaway established his name in Vienna as a composer and pianist. Finally, he gave his only composition recital in 1828. He died suddenly a few months later probably due to typhoid fever. Legacy Schubert’s music was by and large underappreciated while he was alive. There were all in all only a few enthusiasts in Vienna. After he died, however, interest in his work in fact increased. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, and other famous composers in due time discovered his compositions. Nowadays, historians rank Schubert expressly among the greatest composers of the era, and his music remains in general very popular.

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.549467 Composed by Alexander Scriabin. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3499755. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549467). Score: 8 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 2 pages. Duration: 3:10. An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background Op.11/2 Alto Clarinet version. First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors. Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

Saxophone Quintet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 4 - SKU: A0.813601 Composed by Henry Purcell. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Instructional,Multicultural,Standards,World. 8 pages. Regis Bookshar #6431421. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813601). Saxophone Quintet - Advanced/Intermediate - . This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. This particular arrangement is for a Saxophone Quintet, consisting of 2 Altos, 2 Tenors and 1 Baritone, and features an Alto Saxophone on the melody, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this piece. You may find something else that may suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a wide variety of styles also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check back periodically because new arrangements are added as often as possible. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Purcell's Allegro from his Sonata for Trumpet will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.
