The title translates to “first piece†which is meant to be one of the orchestra’s first performance pieces giving the group a chance to perform together for the first time. As noted on the score’s last page the director should feel free to omit the 2nd eighth note and make the 1st eighth note a quarter note throughout.  This will simplify the piece even more. Full score included along with parts and optional harp. If this composition appeals to you please consider the many others in this string series. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. Composed in 1999, the music celebrates the various stages of an American life at the waking of the 21st century. Constructed in four movements and representing four stages of life, birth, adolescence, maturity and old age, the music also pays homage to Shakespeare's Seasons Of Man His acts being seven ages, incorporated throughout the work.Spring introduces the ideas of birth and infancy. After the principal theme has been stated, there is a violin cadenza encountering all twelve major keys and a 13/8 time signature representing the ancient golden ratio. These elements recall birth with all the possibilities a new life offers. Ending the movement, the principal theme is repeated with more complexity... as if posing life's questions.Summer represents the excitement and bravado of youthful adolescence and young adulthood. For the style of this movement I use a happy-go-lucky Blues voice which melds into Swing. I identify swing rhythm in all of 20th century American music culture as a common thread that runs through Ragtime through Rock and Roll on to Rap. Swing means testing the waters and pushing the envelope for lovers and soldiers.Fall is the slow movement symbolizing the wisdom of maturity. It is a peaceful theme with nostalgic strokes. It is a time for sincere reflection and enjoying ones accomplishments in life.Winter embodies the complexities and knowledge of an older person and that of a dying person. The movement begins with the principal them from Spring, but with a dissonance that emanates from a lifetime full of emotions and responsibilities. In the middle of the movement is a transition to an old world. I use my personal ancestry from Ireland as a foundation from which to rediscover one's lineage and explore the meaning and value of a cultural legacy.The exploration evolves into a four- and five-part fugue with a reel, jig, air, countered bass and the motif from the principal theme. All these elements, dances and melodies appear simultaneously and converge to form a unique insight to life's consequences from a historical perspective. Following the fugue, the principal theme finds its way back in. It sounds much as it did at birth. In the end, the solo violin cadenza carries the last earthly breaths before the violin and orchestra once again join in harmony to focus on a new life being transformed somewhere else. A Moderato of about 4 mins duration, an Andante, the featured portion of the suite, running about 7 mins, and a final Allegro, all clocking in at just under 14 mins. ALL notes are playable in first position for ALL sections, of course! The basses sometimes shift to 1 1/2 position, as is the usual pedagogy for their instrument. No fast notes across strings or trills. A minimum of accidentals. These three pieces use tightly controlled rhythms, intervals, and melodic fragments, to create a maximum of symphonic euphony through the combination of just a few musical elements. The audio clip is the complete suite. This work can be the centerpiece of a concert for a youth orchestra, a community group, or a high school ensemble. The phrases are not longer than 4 notes, many are two-note groups, making the choices for bowings much easier than longer strings of notes. I did this arrangement with 2nd year students in mind. The piece is really good for focusing on low 2's in the violin and viola, dotted quarter AND triplet rhythms for everyone, and rests on beat 1. The rhythms are almost always true to the original - listen to it with your students to help them feel the tricky spots. You need a strong bass laying down the harmonic foundation throughout for this to work, cello is not doubling. There are usually three independent rhythmic parts going on, which presents a fun challenge and makes the layers of the piece fun and interesting. The piece also utilizes some fun techniques including stomping on the floor (sounds awesome on stage!) and knocking on the back of the instrument. There is an optional cut to remove the bridge if the piece is too much/too long for your group. This piece is a blast to play and I hope your students enjoy it!

This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!
