The three-part ostinato in the alto line turns the section into a sort of backup group (the nymphettes if you will...) who herald the sea nymphs now caring for Ferdinand's father deep at the bottom of the water. The pulsation and doo-wop nature of the alto trio is meant to heighten the comic effect of Ariel's failed attempt to console Ferdinand at this moment in Act 1, Scene 2 of the play.

If you ever need a break from the soundbyte theology found in so many contemporary Christian lyrics, why not revisit the words of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who could stretch a single coherent thought across multiple verses of his hymns? Watts was a prolific writer on many subjects, including geography, astronomy, ethics, and psychology. His book on Logic became a standard university text, being used at Oxford for over 100 years. But his greatest desire was to assist Christians in the worship of God and it is his hymns for which he is best remembered today.These old words are here set to new music which represents a blending of three different traditions: First, and most obvious, is the rustic sound of early American shape-note singing. Second is the strong linearity of 13th century Ars Antiqua voice leading, in which each part was more or less independent. And third is my own fondness for mixed meters and sonorities built on fourths and seconds. Yet it all works somehow: these are actually very singable hymns once the choir has acclimated to the style. Most fall comfortably into a simple diatonic language and would present no jarring problems for the listener. Five of the hymns are for standard mixed voices (SATB); one is for men’s voices (TTB); one for women’s (SSA) and the last, a Doxology, is in six parts (SSATTB) with a florid threefold amen. There is admittedly a certain sameness about these settings; perhaps it’s best if they are not all sung in one go, cover to cover. Taken individually, however, there is no reason they couldn’t make for a refreshing change from the usual church anthem, and a group of three or four could easily find a place on a choral recital program.

The music is divided in three sections with different atmospheres:A- Introduction: (bars 1/10). A man is sleeping calmly looking at the sky and his dream turns into a dance (bars 11/38).B- Second verse: (bars 39/46). He makes a comparison between the five medlar stones and the five sorrows of his heart. But gradually he stars to feel happy and sings a lively song (bars 47/63).C- The last section is a lovely melody which transports him to a deep dream (nonsense lyrics: Jir, jir… mi…zanka mar…).* The lyrics from Inazio Mujika are in Basque language.  Spanish and English translation of the text is included for those who hardly recognize Basque language. Furthermore, a small introductory guide can be found in the score for a correct Basque pronunciation.*This song has been recorded on a CD in 2005 under the conduction of composer Javier Busto himself. The CD goes over 25 years of composing and contains exclusively music for mixed choirs. Name of the CD: HONDARRIBIA… AMETSETAN.

This arrangement grooves along with engaging three-part supporting harmonies that blossom into four or five-part harmony when the tune naturally calls for some color. Starting with bars of 11 beats might raise a few eyebrows. However, this short setting of anonymous C15th words (as with many of my pieces) is intended to support the text, rather than be a nice tune with words shoehorned in. What turns out to be a flowing opening line for the Sopranos (/ solo) leads into a simple refrain. Altos join for the second verse, still in unison, with a slightly elaborated 2-part refrain including duplets against 3/4. So on with the Tenors added in verse three and the Basses in verse four. By verse five, some harmony is forthcoming, as is a brief division for the Sops. Although the nominal key rests in C minor and the refrains so far have resolved on a G major chord, the final chorus ends on a triumphant 8-part C major chord.A definite showpiece for an (at least) reasonably competent choir.
