The Way We Were is one of the best known and best loved songs performed by Barbra Streisland during her long and successful career. The song was written by Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch for the 1973 film of the same name. It was the top selling single of the year in the US and won two Academy awards for its writers. This version is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Bassoon. The music is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments and is ideal for musicians at an intermediate level and above. Total performance time is around three minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to approach expressive playing and control at a slow tempo. Here we have an abridged version of ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s famous ‘The Four Seasons’ suite, arranged here for oboe and bassoon. A little challenging perhaps but instantly recognizable and enjoyable to play. Suitable for intermediate players and above - no fiendishly difficult bits - the main points to watch out for are the tempo changes at bar 28 (where the oboe slows the tempo before a slight accelerando) and bar 34 (a new tempo, slightly down on the opening one, is established). These tempo markings are not obligatory and the piece can ebb and flow rubato fashion at these points, if you wish. Also, note the rallentando at the end. Enjoy yourselves!
