Piano Solo - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.866232 Composed by Jeffrey Ouper. Arranged by Jeffrey Ouper. Christmas,Halloween,Hanukkah,Holiday,Patriotic. Score. 11 pages. Jeffrey Ouper #5968693. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866232). Celebrate Holidays Piano Solos features all 10 holiday favorites for an established beginner who wants to play solos (and not duets!). Each piece has simple harmonies, without changing or dumbing-down a melody all that much. These are great for a picky student who wants to play themes they know, or want a motivational purpose to play music (in this case to celebrate a holiday). Each piece includes the holiday it is celebrating. This is both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 together: Auld Lang Syne (New Year's Eve), Amazing Grace (Black History Month), Stars & Stripes Forever (July 4th), Over the River & Through the Woods (Thanksgiving), The First Noel (Christmas), Rakes of Mallow (St. Patrick's Day), Gong Xi Gong Xi (Chinese New Year), I Have a Little Dreidel (Hanukkah), Happy Birthday Cha-Cha-Cha, In the Hall of the Mountain King (Halloween)

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1153721 By Bradley Sowash. By Bradley Sowash. Arranged by Bradley Sowash. Christian,Jazz,Praise & Worship,Religious,Spiritual. Score. 53 pages. Bradley Sowash #753982. Published by Bradley Sowash (A0.1153721). Best loved hymns and spirituals transformed Arranger’s description The songs in this collection represent some of the best-loved hymns and spirituals in America. Their durability is intriguing. Generations of handing down new renditions have reduced them to their essential qualities. This ‘essence’ offers a composer and musician plenty of room for interpretation and improvisation. Memorable melodies such as these make great material for variations since the listener, knowing the tune so well, can appreciate its changing directions. I also find new vitality by underpinning old songs with modern rhythmic textures: what jazz musicians call the groove. Shorter songs call for original but stylistically similar additional sections. The addition of blue notes, favorite licks, alternative harmonies and improvisations helps me reinterpret this familiar music into nearly original compositions. Having sought to make them my own, I now invite you to do the same. Publisher's description In his unique, rhythmic style, Sowash transforms some of the best-loved hymns and spiritual songs of all time into nearly original selections for solo jazz piano. Chord symbols are included to encourage improvisation and ensemble arrangements. - Augsburg Fortress.

Folk Songs For Classical Guitar - Volume 29 (Songs 757-783)

Acoustic Guitar,Instrumental Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1163847 Composed by Traditional/Anonymous. Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. Classical,Early Music,Folk,Traditional. Individual part. 46 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #764199. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1163847). This is the twenty-ninth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view.Active internal links for navigating from thematic indexes to particular songs and back to indexes have been added, and also external internet links to sites that give further information for the 945 songs of this first collection for classical guitar.Volume 29 (Songs 757-783)Sally BrownSally GraySamuel Hooser’s HymnSandySantianaScarborough Fair 1Scarborough Fair 2 (singing together version)Scraping Up Sand In The Bottom Of The SeaSearching for LambsSeasons of the Year (the)Second Britford CarolSee Amid the Winter’s SnowSeeds of Love (the)Servant of Rosemary Lane (the)Servingman and the Husbandman (the)Seven Virgins (the)Seventeen Come SundayShaker March No 20Shaker Solemn Song 2 (A)Shaker Solemn Song 12Shaker Turning Shuffle Tune No. 5She’s like the SwallowSheepcrook and Black DogSheep-shearing SongShepherd and his dog (the)Shepherd’s Song (the)Shepherds Arise.

Violin Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1160848 Composed by Julian Carlick. Children,Classical,Folk,Instructional. 10 pages. Oval Music Edition #761159. Published by Oval Music Edition (A0.1160848). The seventh of eight volumes in the Violin Collections series pupils' books. Seven pieces each a bit more demanding than in the previous volumes. The idea is to give students plenty of learning material so that they have something new to tackle without the teacher necessarily telling them what to do. Being folk tunes, some of the students will already known the tunes, though they have been slightly adapted so that they can be played with the other stringed instruments without causing many technical challenges. If the students don't know the tunes, now is the chance to catch up on some traditions! The accompaniment book is available separately and includes parts for a violinist, the teacher or mature player and keyboard. Collections will be available for Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. All can play and learn together and the books can be used for ensembles and for sight reading.Learning topics are included at the beginning of each Collection. It is possible to buy the collections in eight volumes, one whole volume, 76 pieces or split into two parts. On January 14th 2023 just the Violin Collections are available to download. “If You're Happy and You Know It” for 13-note Bells and Boomwhackers® (with Color Coded Notes)

Large Ensemble Bells,Boomwhackers,Glockenspiel,Handbell,Handchime,Orff Instrument,Ukulele,Voice,Xylophone - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.565451 By Sharon Wilson. By Traditional. Arranged by Sharon Wilson. Children,Folk,Instructional,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 11 pages. Sharon Wilson #4357245. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.565451). This sheet music is notated for 13-note (one octave, C to C chromatic scale) instruments with Handbells on one staff and Boomwhackers® on a second staff creating an instrumental ensemble (requires one set of each instrument). Both parts play the melody for one verse beginning with part one (handbells) on the melody and part two (Boomwhackers®) on harmony. After a short interlude, part two plays the melody for the second verse while part one plays harmony. If you want to play only the first verse, an optional ending is provided or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. Included in this set of scores is a combined score with both instrument parts on a grand staff plus a separate score for each instrument. A note and chord chart is also provided to aid in the learning and teaching of this song. Lyrics are provided as well for sing along enjoyment.  Though this sheet music is notated for Handbells and Boomwhackers®, this song is playable by any 13-note, C to C chromatic scale (one octave) instrument such as a xylophone or glockenspiel (though the color coding may not match). This set of scores uses colored noteheads corresponding to the Boomwhackers® color scheme. If you have a set of bells or tubes with a different color scheme, Chroma-Notes Stick Ons can be purchased and applied so the instruments match the Boomwhackers® color scheme. This set of scores is also available (separate purchase) in black and white which will print clearer if you do not have access to a color printer.Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter and eighth rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. The number of ringers and whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. For more advanced players, each person could be assigned two or three notes. For beginners, it is best to assign one or two notes to each person. Note assignment suggestions are included.Other suggestions and uses: * have both parts played by bells or both parts played using only Boomwhackers® * form a choir using multiple sets of bells and/or Boomwhackers® (this would amplify the sound and allow more people to participate)* use as part of the music education for children at school, home, or church* these colorful, inexpensive instruments can be enjoyed by all ages and add a fun, unique element to activities and programs: senior centers, family reunions, church retreats, home school groups, children’s ministriesThis song is one of the 20 arrangements in the collection Folk Songs for 13-note Bells and Boomwhackers® (with Color Coded Notes), VOL. 2. For each song, there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note and chord chart is also provided for most songs. The songs in this digital book are ordered by difficulty with the easiest songs presented first. The songs progressively incorporate more challenging rhythms, some requiring rapid chord changes. Each song in this collection is presented in one of three ways as detailed below:1. Handbells play the melody while the Boomwhackers® keep a steady beat with three-note chords for 1 verse and chorus. 2. Two verses are included: The first verse is easy with fewer notes. The second verse is intermediate and expands the melody by adding more notes. If you want to learn (practice) only the easy verse, an optional ending is provided or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. 3. This set of scores uses black and white noteheads and is best suited for musicians already familiar with reading standard music notation. For beginning musicians, this same set of scores is available (sold separately) with color coded noteheads. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter and eighth rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. Lyrics and chord names are provided as well to aid in the learning and teaching of these songs. The number of ringers and whackers needed will vary depending on the skill level of the participants. Instrument assignment suggestions are provided for each song. Each of the 20 arrangements in this collection is also available separately with accompanying preview pages and audio samples. Titles included in this collection: Are You Sleeping? Piano,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1134483 Composed by Julian Carlick. Classical,Comedy,Traditional. 14 pages. Oval Music Edition #734577. Published by Oval Music Edition (A0.1134483). Beginner Violinists can now explore compound time. These 6, longer pieces, begin to present more variety in rhythms with imaginative titles that are expressed through the music. These pieces will take longer to learn unless used for sight reading for the more developed learner! All have an accompaniment part in a separate book for the teacher playing a keyboard or the violin (or both !!!). This is Volume 8 in the nine volume series, Volume 9 is only scales. All the music can be played with viola players and cellists. This makes for sociable learning. All the Volumes in the Collections series can be used for individual or group tuition. The pieces are to stimulate the imagination by making 'music' right from the start. The download format is easy to read with larger print than many other books for beginners. The volumes can also be bought together as a whole (66 pages) or in two parts. In the beginning, the violin books concentrate more on the lower strings to enable compatibility across the instruments and it can sound less shrill to the worried parent!

Percussion Duet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1315778 By The Beatles. By George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Richard Starkey. Arranged by Marcelo Borba. Multicultural,Patriotic,Pop,Rock,Spiritual,World. Score. 7 pages. Marcelo Borba #904550. Published by Marcelo Borba (A0.1315778). Arrangement for percussion DUET (marimba, vibraphone and others) with chords included. Now and Then's eventful journey to fruition took place over five decades and is the product of conversations and collaborations between the four Beatles that go on to this day. The long mythologised John Lennon demo was first worked on in February 1995 by Paul, George and Ringo as part of The Beatles Anthology project but it remained unfinished, partly because of the impossible technological challenges involved in working with the vocal John had recorded on tape in the 1970s. For years it looked like the song could never be completed. But in 2022 there was a stroke of serendipity. A software system developed by Peter Jackson and his team, used throughout the production of the documentary series Get Back, finally opened the way for the uncoupling of Johnâ??s vocal from his piano part. As a result, the original recording could be brought to life and worked on anew with contributions from all four Beatles. This remarkable story of musical archaeology reflects The Beatlesâ?? endless creative curiosity and shared fascination with technology. It marks the completion of the last recording that John, Paul and George and Ringo will get to make together and celebrates the legacy of the foremost and most influential band in popular music history.

Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1133721 By Various. By Anonymous, Claude Gervaise, Claudin de Sermisy, Erasmus Widmann, Giorgio Mainerio, Henry VIII, Juan Del Encina, Michael Praetorius, Pierre Attaignant, Pierre Phalese, Thoinot Arbeau, Tielman Susato, and William Cornysh. Arranged by Alastair Lodge. Early Music,Folk,Historic,Medieval,Renaissance. 50 pages. Wold Meridian #733832. Published by Wold Meridian (A0.1133721). This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to the Dance Masters which presented 44 of my favourite Renaissance Dance band tunes and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited 22 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. What is more, by contrasting the melody and chords with the full scoring, it should be possible to work some light and shade into performances.  You can hear all the pieces and their chords on YouTube together with contemporary art and historical background material:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYRWH2nycMkMoIoEYEMVPa_EXY6NVDpNSAs a help to those less confident in playing harmony lines, I have provided links to playlists of videos online for each part of each piece. You will hear the selected line on its own with chords and percussion, with the melody line added on repeats. The final repeat includes the other harmony lines, but the featured line is slightly louder in the mix. The performance starts with a percussion beat introduction to set the tempo.Who were the Publishers and the Dance Masters? What did they do? Sometime around the 1500s, the popularity of dance music exploded in Europe. Dance Masters were collecting chansons and dance tunes from courts and rural parts and were teaching these to new audiences, spreading their arrangements and reflecting the performance styles of the areas from which they had collected the tunes. Publishers were able to take these tunes that were becoming known across the regions and nations and spread them even more widely, thanks to technological innovations in music printing which made it quicker and therefore cheaper to produce collections of these dances in four or more parts. These publishers were often highly accomplished composers in their own right, who were both able to provide distinctive harmony lines and compose new tunes in the style of their sources, feeding the courts with enduring tunes. Composers and printers of this time would often use note values that are double the length of those we would be used to seeing today, and so to make this version more readable, breves have become semibreves or whole notes, semibreves have become minims or half notes and so on. Working with this publication For those just starting out in Early Music, the volume is an ideal introduction, since the ensemble can build from a soloist with accompaniment with the chords alone, and parts can be added in as additional musicians become available. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints. The range of each part is quite limited, and though the harmonies may seem strange at times, key signatures are kind to the less experienced musician. If enthusiasm takes hold, then reproductions of early music instruments are sold by some very talented makers, as well as coming up on auction sites. Otherwise, it is possible to put together a fairly convincing ensemble with recorders, violins, a cello and mandolins, bouzoukis, flutes or guitars and gradually introduce the authentic instruments as they become available.

String Quartet Cello,Double Bass,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.746989 By Dizzy Gillespie. By Dizzy Gillespie and Frank Paparelli. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Jazz. 13 pages. Keith Terrett #5820835. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746989). A great sounding arrangement of A Night in Tunisia, your String Orchestra will love it!A jazz solo is written out for you, if you wish you can improvise on the given chord symbols!A Night in Tunisia is a musical composition written by Dizzy Gillespie around 1941–42, while Gillespie was playing with the Benny Carter band. It has become a jazz standard. It is also known as Interlude. Gillespie called the tune Interlude and said some genius decided to call it 'Night in Tunisia'. He said the tune was composed at the piano at Kelly's Stables in New York. He gave Frank Paparelli co-writer credit in compensation for some unrelated transcription work, but Paparelli had nothing to do with the song. A Night in Tunisia was one of the signature pieces of Gillespie's bebop big band, and he also played it with his small groups. In January 2004, The Recording Academy added the 1946 Victor recording by Gillespie to the Grammy Hall of Fame.On the album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1, Art Blakey introduced his 1954 cover version with this statement: At this time we'd like to play a tune [that] was written by the famous Dizzy Gillespie. I feel rather close to this tune because I was right there when he composed it in Texas on the bottom of a garbage can. The audience laughs, but Blakey responds, Seriously. The liner notes say, The Texas department of sanitation can take a low bow.The complex ostinato bass line in the A section is notable for avoiding the standard walking bass pattern of straight quarter notes, and the use of oscillating half-step-up/half-step-down chord changes (using the Sub V, a tritone substitute chord for the dominant chord) gives the song a unique, mysterious feeling. The B section is notable for having an unresolved minor II-V, since the chord progression of the B section is taken from the B section of the standard Alone Together, causing the V chord to lead back into the Sub V of the A section.Like many of Gillespie's tunes, it features a short written introduction and a brief interlude that occurs between solo sections - in this case, a twelve-bar sequence leading into a four-bar break for the next soloist.

Woodwind Ensemble Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.773303 Composed by Various. Arranged by Yoel Epstein. Christian,Folk,Holiday,Praise & Worship,Sacred. 32 pages. Yoel Epstein #3238781. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773303). I wish you the greatest pleasure playing these arrangements of traditional Thanksgiving songs. Thanksgiving is one of the most beautiful of holidays, a holiday filled with joy and music. We Gather Together to Ask the Lord's Blessing: Written in 1597 by Dutch composer Adrianus Valerius to celebrate Holland's victory over Spain, the tune was brought to American shores by the early Dutch settlers. Poet Theodore Baker wrote a new version of the lyrics in 1894, which became the standard Thanksgiving version. Over the River and Through the Wood: Lydia Maria Child, an outspoken abolitionist and advocate for Indian rights, wrote this poem in 1845. It was set to music by an unknown composer. Let All Things Now Living (The Ash Grove) This traditional Welsh melody (Llwyn Onn or The Ash Grove in Welsh) has inspired numerous lyricists to write words to the hauntingly beautiful tune. The poem by Katherine Davis, written in 1939, is the text most associated with Thanksgiving. Amazing Grace: Written by reprobate sailor John Newton in 1779. Known for his profanity, vulgarity and venery, he was imprisoned, beaten, and enslaved, before he reformed, and became a leading minister and hymn-writer. This is one of the most popular hymns ever written. This Land is Your Land: A traditional American tune, made famous by folksinger Woody Guthrie in 1940. Guthrie wrote the words as a rebuff to the song God Bless America, the huge hit by songwriter Irving Berlin. As a counter to Berlin's drum-beating patriotism, Guthrie would occasionally add politically charged verses expressing his support for communism. I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you need other pieces of Americana for your ensemble, you might find them in Best-Loved American Folksongs, in two volumes, available here (volume 1) and here (volume 2). There are also arrangements of Battle Hymn of the Republic, Stars and Stripes Forever, America the Beautiful, and The Star-Spangled Banner. You can see them all and more at my composer page. I have also arranged three songs from the Holocaust, which I distribute for free on IMSLP. You can find them at http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Ravpapa. If you need arrangements of any of these songs for special combinations of instruments, feel free to contact me at yoelepst@gmail.com, and I will try to accommodate.

Fifteen Safari Duets for Tubas
2 Tubas (duo)

Composed by Gregory Fritze. Classical Period, Contemporary Classical, Jazz, Method, Etudes and Exercises. Score. 38 pages. Published by Musica Nova USA
Fifteen Safari Duets for Tubas was composed for playing duets with my tuba students. The fifteen duets are at different levels of difficulty and various styles so that we always had duets to play no matter what ability of student. There is something in each duet for students to learn from the basics of tone production, rhythms, melodic phrasing, jazz, graphic notation, etc. Most are sight readable and some have been performed in concerts. They are all fun to play. Although for tubas, they may be played on any instrument.<br> <br> In 1988 I spent a month in Kenya on safari and experiencing the African wildlife and culture, thus the inspiration for these duets that were composed soon after the trip in 1989 and 1990 and have been a regular part of my teaching ever since. Four of these duets are recorded on the compact disc “Tuba Safari” (Troy 1173) on Albany Records.<br> <br> 1. Elephants at Stave<br> <br> This duet presents the cantabile style studied for playing the tuba. I find that this duet helps the student much like the melodies of Borgodni etudes. There are more elephants in Tsavo than anywhere else in Kenya. It was not uncommon to see large families of thirty elephants at a time.<br> <br> 2. Gallop – Thompson Gazelle at Amboseli<br> <br> This duet provides an opportunity to read in a sharp key, D major, as well as basic rhythms and articulations. I find that the more advanced students can read in a faster tempo and other students can work in a slower tempo – a common choice in all of the duets. Large herds of playful Thompson Gazelle were a usual occurrence in most of the game parks in Kenya. <br> <br> 3. Rhinos at Nairobi Game Park<br> <br> This waltz helps the student match phrasing in a cantabile setting. There are a few instances where the teacher (playing the first part) plays a phrase then the student plays a similar phrase. The rhinoceros is a very noble animal that can grow to more that 1,000 pounds and is known for its horn. The Nairobi game park is located just outside the city, giving a sense of surrealism to the panorama.<br> <br> 4. Giraffes at Nairobi Twiga Park<br> <br> This is in a “rock” style with syncopated rhythms and cantabile melodies. The Nairobi Twiga park is just outside the city and is the only place where one can feed the giraffes. Along with their long necks they have very long tongues.<br> <br> 5. Warthogs at Ngulia<br> <br> Legato scales and syncopated rhythms are the features of this duet. Warthogs have tails that are held upright when they run.<br> <br> 6. Baboons at Kiliguni<br> <br> This duets alternates in rock style and swing. Baboons are sometimes a problem because they will try to steal food from the tourists’ tables. They will work together where one causes a diversion while the others steal. <br> <br> 7. Pastoral – Cape Buffalo at Samburu<br> <br> The key of A for this duet gives variation for the students. Cape Buffalo are in large herds on the savanna. The Samburu Lodge dining area was built next to a watering hole. At the beginning of breakfast there were no animals, but in fifteen minutes more than 500 cape buffalo were at the water hole.<br> <br> 8. Song - Hippos at Mzima Springs<br> <br> This is the easiest of rhythms and range of the duets, especially for the 2nd(student) part. Hippopotamuses can grow up to 4,000 pounds and spend most of their time sleeping in the water during the day. At night they go on land to hunt.<br> <br> 9. Leopards at Kimana Lodge<br> <br> This duet is non-metric and uses graphic notation. This was a favorite duet of my students as many have never experienced this notation before. The leopard is a large predatory cat that usually hunts at night. <br> <br> 10. Colobus Monkeys at the Ark<br> <br> This is an Invention in the Bach style. The Ark is a building that was built in 1969 at a watering hole for tourists to watch wildlife. The colobus monkey is black with white on its forearms and chest. <br> <br> 11. Zebra Migration at Masai Mara<br> <br> This duet is in a “Medium Swing” jazz style. The great migration between the Masai Mara and Serengeti involves about two million wildebeest, zebras and other animals every year. It is considered one of the most impressive natural events worldwide.<br> <br> 12. Ostrich at Samburu<br> <br> This duet works on double time and half time. The ostrich is the largest bird in the world. In Samburu there was an ostrich that hung around the lodge, her name was Margaret. She was very friendly with everybody but she would steal your hat.<br> <br> 13. Cheetah at Voi<br> <br> This is another duet that includes graphic notation. The cheetah can run up to 80 miles an hour when chasing after prey. When not hunting prey it often walks very slowly.<br> <br> 14. Gallop – Gerenuk at Buffalo Springs<br> <br> This gallop displays different types of articulation. The gerenuk is an antelope with a slightly extended neck so it can eat higher leaves from trees.<br> <br> 15. Lions at Mara Sopa<br> <br> This duet is in the style of a fanfare. The lion is considered the king of the savanna. <br> <br> Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Tuba Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over one hundred compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. Chording to the Dance Masters - Melody and chords for 44 Renaissance Dance Consort pieces

C Instrument - Level 2 - Digital Download By Various. By Anonymous, Claudin de Sermisy, Henry VIII, Pierre Phalese, Thoinot Arbeau, John Dowland (1563- 1626), Michael Praetorius (1571-1621), Pierre Attaignant (1494-1553), Pierre Certon (1510-1572), William Cornysh (1470-1523), Juan Del Encina (1468-1530), Claude Gervaise (1540-1560), Giorgio Mainerio (1535-1582), Erasmus Widmann (1572-1634), and Tielman Susato (1500-1561). Arranged by Alastair Lodge. 151, 153, 162, Folk, Renaissance. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 38 pages. Wold Meridian #727149. Published by Wold Meridian
Chording to the Dance Masters is a selection of dance tunes that were collected originally between about 1500 and 1620. Printing made many of these tunes popular throughout Europe during these times, some of them composed by the printer/publishers themselves, but many more of them existed previously as rustic dance tunes or popular chansons. The works were originally published to be played by three to five instrumentalists, with no particular instruments specified. They suited consorts or “choirs” of instruments that were depicted in the illustrations of Agricola, Mersenne and most notably Praetorius and are now preserved in museums around the world.<br> <br> Many editions exist in the 3, 4 or 5 parts as originally published, and these are an absolute joy to perform from, where the interweaving parts create interesting harmonies that demonstrate the skills of these renaissance composer/arranger/publishers. Playing with modern reproductions of the early instruments will recreate textures and sounds unique to this period. However, not everyone is lucky enough to either own these instruments or else have contact with others with whom they could form ensembles. This book aims to widen the experience out to those who would like to play these tunes on their own or with the accompaniment of a guitar, keyboard or other available chordal instrument. Fake books abound for those who wish to play Jazz, Folk, Classical and Popular music where the melody is annotated with chords so that players can access these tunes in their own way. As far as I am aware, this has not often been done for the player who wishes to busk their way through music of the Renaissance period.<br> <br> I have attempted to include all the chords implied by the polyphonic parts of the original publications, simply because it is in the transitions of the harmonies under the melodies where the genius of the original arranger/publisher resides. Those who go on to explore the original versions may look forward to the way in which each line presents the player with intrinsically beautiful counter melodies.<br> <br> At first, the rapidity of chord changing can be a bit daunting, so I have marked out what I consider to be the essential chords for accompaniment in boxes. Playing just these will provide adequate accompaniment, whilst leaving the more adventurous scope to enhance their performance by referencing some of the other chords. You can hear the chording arrangements together with the original 3, 4 or 5 part versions of all 44 pieces on a YouTube playlist which has been made as a companion to this volume at<br> <br> https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYRWH2nycMkMoIoEYEMVPa_EXY6NVDpNS<br> <br> As well as the solo or player in a duo, this book would also be of value for someone who is used to reading chords rather than melody lines wishing to join in with a renaissance consort. The selection I have chosen represents quite a few of the “standards” that have become regularly played since the revival of renaissance music in the late 1960s. It is hoped that should this volume prove popular, companion volumes with all the parts provided for the same pieces could make essential repertoire for the budding renaissance dance consorts of the future.Chording to the Dance Masters is a selection of dance tunes that were collected originally between about 1500 and 1620.
