The psalm is a deeply personal reflection by the psalmist on the wonder of my being and on the inescapability of God's love, wherever we might try to hide, and whatever we might do ourselves or might experience - even death. This gentle setting for unaccompanied SATB choir uses the full range of all four choral voices, with just one divisi passage at the end of the composition in the tenor and bass parts. The piece should be sung meditatively, without too much drama, even in the fortissimo passages, aiming for a sense of wonder and inner peace. Psalm 139 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know all my sitting down and rising; you discern my thoughts from afar. You mark all my journeys and my resting place and are acquainted with all my ways. For not a word is on my tongue but, Lord, you know it altogether. You encompass me, behind and before me, you lay you hand upon me. O where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I climb up to heaven you are there; you are there if the grave is where I lie. If I take the wings of the morning, or dwell in the depths of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, your right hand hold me fast. The verses of this Anglican priest who was a contemporary of John Donne describe beautifully a dialog between 'Love’ (the Divine) and the human being. The score attempts to illustrate the dramatic progression of this spiritual dialogue in which the eternal ´Love´ gives himself up to welcome the human being with merciful insistence as a privileged guest at a mystical meal. To make this dialogue clear while the choir takes the voice of the human nature -full of shame and guilt- while the Trebles assume the voice of the Divine Love -full of mercy and compassion-. Neither the choosing of trebles nor the number 3 is casual: Childhood evokes naturally ideas of love and purity which are attributes of God himself, thus trebles seemed to me an appropriate choice to represent the voice of “Love†and the fact that there are three, is an intended reference to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

Officially the credits show it as written by Al Jolson, Billy Rose, and Dave Dreyer, with Jolson and Dreyer being shown on the sheet music as being responsible for the music and Rose the lyrics. Al Jolson was often given credits on sheet music so he could earn more money by popularising them, but he played no actual part in writing this song. Jolson never recorded the song although he did use it in the touring version of Big Boy in 1927. Popular recordings in 1927 were by Whispering Jack Smith, Nat Shilkret (vocal by Johnny Marvin) and the separate recording by Johnny Marvin himself for Columba Records. The song became particularly associated with Ted Lewis who used it to close his act. The song has since become a standard, with many artists performing it. This is an arrangement for vocal duet and Symphonic Wind Band.

It was written for the score of their 1947 musical Brigadoon. There were three hit versions of the song in the United States in 1947: Frank Sinatra's version was the highest charting at no. 20. Mildred Bailey and Mary Martin both charted with the song at no. 21 that year. Nat King Cole recorded more than one version of the song, including a later version that was used as the closing song in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day which starred Bill Murray.
