Latin.Szymon Godziemba-Trytek, born in Poland in 1988, already is one of the acclaimed choral composers of our time and has been awarded numerous prizes at national and international composition competitions, as e.g. in 2014 for his 'Miserere mei Deus, miserere mei', a musical setting of Psalm 56 for eight-part mixed a-cappella choir. It is the effective antiphony between female and male voices, four-part homophonic passages including four bars for two solo sopranos, rich dynamic nuances, staggered entries of the voices in imitation, and sound elements to be performed in an individual loop-like manner that make this sacred choral work special. For this work, the young composer was awarded the 3rd prize at the Composition Competition Musica Sacra.

With this sheet music, you can play Miserere mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri on piano. It's a carefully created piano arrangement of the famous Renaissance composition. Allegri composed the setting of Psalm 50 for two choirs in the 1630s (during the reign of Pope Urban VIII) for exclusive performances in the Sistine Chapel. It was forbidden to transcribe the piece or to perform it anywhere else, creating quite a mystery around it! In 1770, a young Mozart (14 years old) heard the piece during a service in the Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, he wrote it down completely from memory, establishing his reputation as a musical prodigy. Miserere mei, Deus is a beautiful, solemn piece, and it sounds wonderful on piano!

Miserere mei, Deus, Latin for Have mercy on me, O God, is a setting of Psalm 51 (50) by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri. It was composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s, for use in the Sistine Chapel during matins, as part of the exclusive Tenebrae service on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday of Holy Week.The Tenebrae service where the Miserere would be sung normally began at dusk, hence the name. During the ritual, candles would be extinguished one by one, save for the last candle which remained alight and was then hidden. Miserere Mei, Deus is a setting of Psalm 51 for a cappella choir, but it is no motet. It is an expressionistic piece in the horror genre, at times creepy and unsettling, at times dark and violent; it is extremely dramatic.The piece was commissioned for a concert commemorating the late-Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo. In it, Gesualdo implores God to have mercy on him for his murdering his wife and her lover in flagrante. He recalls the brutal slaughter, recreated in operatic Sprechstimme by half of the choir, while the other half wails and moans, but as he begs for forgiveness, his own words to his wife come back to haunt him: Pieta?! Non avra la mia pieta! (Mercy?! You will have no mercy from me!). He whips himself furiously and sinks to the floor exhausted, murmuring the groans for forgiveness that opened the work. It is left unresolved whether he has received forgiveness. .

Great way to start a concert! Miserere (psalm 50) is a processional march for SATB choir. First bars are really a processional march, while chorus is a poliphonic song generating an atmosphere of round. Verses are gregorian imitation. Effective and easy for creating an atmosphere in line with Easter sorrow. It could be performed marching the choir, and an small group singing the gregorian imitation.Tesiture not so demanding makes it afordable for all type of choirs. The highest tesiture has a short durationg going back to relaxed one soon. It is usefull for conductors to start to work the Easter season, using it as warming up exercise (progresivity, mantric, self voice control,...).It is really interesting for starting a concert marching the choir to the stage, or at least to start the concert.At services it could be used at communio.For aditional info, please contact czmorago@gmail.com

Miserere mei, Deus (Have Mercy on me, O God) is a setting of Psalm 51 written in the 1630's and most likely sung in the Sistine Chapel during Good Friday of Holy Week. It is a wonderful example of polyphony in five parts.This work, beautifully arranged for 5-part Trombone Choir (Ensemble) by Ralph Sauer, is about 5 minutes in length (with repeat) and is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.There is a story that this work was heard twice by a young 14-year-old Mozart during a special visit to the Vatican with his father in 1770. He transcribed it perfectly from memory creating the first unauthorized copy (the Church wished to preserve its mystery and forbad copies, threatening excommunication). The very next year it was published in England.
