Latin.In gleich zwei Fassungen hat der renommierte libanesisch-französische Komponist Naji Hakim seine Komposition Laetatus sum für gemischten Chor (SATB) und Orgel (2. Orgel ad lib.) vorgelegt, die hier in nur einer Notenausgabe vereint sind. Neben einer vollständigen Vertonung des 122. Psalms, die für feierliche Introitus und Prozessionen sowie festliche Pontifikal-Vespern und Konzerte gleichermaßen gut geeignet ist, findet sich auch eine gekürzte Fassung dieses Psalms Davids. Sie ist hervorragend als feierliches Introitus (oder Offertorium) an Sonntagen im Jahreskreis zu verwenden. Das bis zu achtstimmige Werk entstand als Auftragskomposition zum 150-jährigen Bestehen des Knabenchors am Kölner Dom und wurde in einer „Orgelfeierstunde des Kölner Doms 2015 uraufgeführt. In der Tat lässt sich Hakims besondere Affinität zur Orgel auch hier nicht leugnen. Der mit zahlreichen Orgel- und Kompositionspreisen dekorierte Langlais-Schüler sieht für die höchst anspruchsvolle und umfangreiche Orgelpartie dieses lateinischsprachigen Chorwerks gleich zwei Orgeln vor. Da sie aber nicht gleichzeitig, sondern stets im Wechsel zum Einsatz kommen, kann der gesamte Part auch auf nur einer Orgel gespielt werden. Beide Versionen dieses mit Taktwechseln nur so gespickten Psalms setzen bei Chor wie Organist(en) ein hohes Maß an musikalischem Können voraus.

Hakim also manages to capture the textual content of the Latin verses from Psalm 81 by means of musical imagery with various madrigalisms, e.g. with extended melismatic melody lines and distinctive rhythms. Dieser war zeit seines Lebens als Sklavenhändler tätig, wurde aber gegen Ende seines Lebens bekehrt, kämpfte gegen den Sklavenhandel und wirkte als Prediger für die englische Kirche. In seinem Lied Amazing Grace (Erstaunliche Gnade) dankt er für die wundersame Bekehrung und beschreibt sie als Gnade Gottes. Hakim komponierte die Variationen für Orgel solo (ED 20862) und für Sopran und Orgel (ED 20831).

'Edvard Munch's painting Unge mennesker på stranden (Young people on the beach) depicts a peaceful melancholy evening with pensive young people on the beach. A redhead wearing a white dress and a jolly red hat sits near a pram in the center of the picture; to the left, the calm sea in cold bluish colors and to the right, green and lively colours. The atmosphere of this picture inspired me to write a nostalgic fantasy for the violin.' Born in Beirut and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, the organist and composer Naji Hakim (*1955) has won numerous prizes both as a creative and as a performing artist. After having worked as an organist in Paris for many years, for example as successor to Olivier Messiaen at La Trinité, he has been composer-in-residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London since 2004. For the 100th anniversary of the Binns organ at the Albert Hall in Nottingham he was commissioned to write 'Fanfare for Nottingham'. The composer designed the work as 'a series of free and energetic variations on the melody of the hymn Nottingham accompanying a merry procession' – it has become a hymnic and effective work, a valuable addition to the organ repertoire.

In commissioning this work, Hans-Georg Vleugels invited me to pay tribute to history's legendary churches, such as the Hagia Sofia of Istanbul and the Schlosskirche of Chemnitz. The Schlosskirche, a former Benedictine abbey, was the catalyst for the foundation of the city of Chemnitz. The composition, Hagia Sofia (Holy Wisdom), is based on the medieval antiphon Crucem sanctam subiit, which was suggested by my son Jean-Paul due to its likely links with the Templar Knights, who had a very active role in defending Christianity in the Middle East. It is articulated in four harmonic and ornamental variations (Maestoso, Andante, Maestoso, Allegro) and is framed by a solemn organum setting of the medieval theme. (Naji Hakim).

The joyful character prolongs the accents of Saint Thomas Aquinas' text: O sacrum convivium! in quo Christus sumitur: recolitur memoria passionis eius: mens impletur gratia: et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur. The first movement is a sonata form without development, based on three themes, rhythmical, oriental, waltz respectively. The second movement is characterized by an initial theme with Chopinesque-contours, followed by a more agitated theme and a choral-theme accompanied by a carillon in the treble register of the piano. The recapitulation includes a cadenza, Variation on the choral-theme. The finale is a rondo with a cheerful refrain twirling as a tarentella. Naji Hakim Die Taube (The Dove) was commissioned by â€Kirchenmusik bei St. Anna Augsburg†to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Augsburger Religionsfrieden (Religious peace of Augsburg). It is based on three biblical verses related to peace : Gen. 8/11, Luk. 1/79, Joh. 14/27. The music is through composed and develops the character of the verses with contrasted string textures, putting in relief the expressive vocal line, declamation of light and happiness. The work exists in three versions : 1. for Tenor and string quartet, 2. for Tenor and string orchestra, 3. for Tenor and organ. First performance : by Robert Sellier, Tenor, Capella St. Anna Streichquartett, St. Anna Augsburg, Festkonzert zum Hohen Friedensfest, 8 August 2005. Gen.8/11 : â€And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off. †Luk. 1/79 : â€To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. †Joh.14/27 : â€Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you. †...to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1,79) Words and music bind people together to form fellowships which guide us into the way of peace. Singing or playing together combine bodies and souls, so that our rhythm and breathing becomes one - a sense of belonging to one another is created which instils the very nature of peace. So it is that by becoming an integral part of the music, our feet are guided 'into the way of peace'. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let God´s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future.
