Carl Albert Hermann Teike (5 February 1864 – 28 May 1922) was a German composer who wrote over 100 military marches and twenty concert works. Teike began writing military marches, including one in 1889 that would eventually be named Alte Kameraden (Old Comrades). Upon his bandmaster's disapproval of that composition, Teike resigned from the army. A publisher purchased the song from him for twenty German Goldmark. Alte Kameraden later became one of the most popular marches in the world. This arrangement is for a Brass 8 piece.

This great old march written before WW1 is not very playable by the average school band. I made a more playable arrangement of it by starting in Eb and going to Ab at the trio instead of the original Db to Gb. I wrote a new countermelody to the first strain that was not so high, took out the grace notes and removed many of the repeats. It is still almost too long, but it is now very playable. The key is the ability to play the dotted 8th 16th and not triplets. Make this very crisp, marcato and separated. Enjoy.

In May of 1944, Sherman tanks of the Canadian 3rd Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards) entered the Liri Valley, southeast of Rome, beginning Operation Diadem—the drive that would eventually break through the heavily fortified German defences of the Gustav and Hitler Lines, and liberate Rome.When the regiment left Italy in early 1945, its mission accomplished, it left behind 61 fallen comrades (out of a total of 71 members of the regiment killed during the War).To them, to Trooper Ed Stafford, the regiment’s last surviving veteran of the Italian campaign, and to all who have served, this concert march is dedicated.Drawing inspiration from classic film soundtracks, the march celebrates the courage, spirit, and heroism of Canada's soldiers and all those who take up arms for their country.Â

You can still see that same strong loyalty among the comrades-at-arms of today, displayed by veterans of World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq. Grafulla (1810-80) was an outstanding bandmaster mostly known to bandsmen as the composer of The Grand March and Washington Greys. He was known also as a talented arranger and during the war was director of the 7th Regimental Band of the New York State Militia (N.Y.S.M) in New York. This band was considered a pace-setter not only for military but also popular music. Manual of Arms Polka was written for the 7th Regiment in 1862 and incorporates the bugle signals of Assembly, Shoulder Arms, Right Face, Left Face, Right About Face, and Fix Bayonets. Some of these calls are not found in the regulation drill manuals of the day and may have been exclusive to the 7th Regiment. The last section includes the song Comrades Touch the Elbow. This was the song of the 9th Company, 7th Regiment, N.Y.S.M. The song describes how Soldiers would touch the elbow to steady their nerves as they moved forward together in battle.
