Gustav Holst - Folksongs of Hampshire England . In the early 1900's there was great interest in collecting and preserving the folk songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Equipped with their newly invented recording devices, people such as Cecil Sharp, Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst would travel into the country-side to record, or notate songs being sung. They would frequently use these songs in their own compositions. Holst's music in particular is filled with those songs and his two suites for band are especially valued by wind bands around the world. This group of four songs was arranged for voice and piano by Holst and set for clarinet choir by John Gibson. The songs are 1. Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low 2. Bedlam City 3. The Irish Girl 4. Young Reilly. The instrumentation is: Eb Soprano Clarinet, Bb Soprano Clarinet 1 - 3, Alto Clarinet (with an alternate 4th Bb part), Bass Clarinet, Contra Bass or Contralto. Although an alternate for alto is provided, the alto is preferred.

This is a medley of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Angels from the Realms of Glory, While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night, Infant Holy. Some of the lyrics are changed and it is in SATB choir cello with parts included and piano. ?The angels spread God?s message all around; In the country and in the town. The sight of the angels sent fear in some of the people?

?The angels and all of the people in the area followed a bright star. It shown it?s great light upon a stable. There they found Mary, Joseph and the newborn King?

*Star is shining, in the night sky

Lighting up the stable walls

Baby?s lying in a manger

Where His bed?s a cattle stall

Mary?s rocking, Joseph?s walking

Angels singing, Bells are ringing

For the babe, was born for all.

The ballad that is most closely associated with Irish communities and can usually be heard sung/played on Saint Patrick's Day or at an Irish funeral, has now been freshly arranged for a 2-part choir (TB) with solo Violin and Piano accompaniment. Accessible for all levels of singing and can used for a variety of venues.
