Monteverdi - The Fourth Book of Madrigals 1603In this book, Monteverdi continues to develop the techniques and writing practices that would eventually form the first opera and his Stile Nuovo. The polyphony becomes more complex and more tonal and the interdependence of the parts more striking. He is experimenting with more dissonance but also moves towards more tonal writing. Although a far cry from the I IV V and minor of the modern pop song, he is nonetheless helping to push forward a more diatonic type of harmony with a more dramatic tonal and harmonic structure that goes much more towards true word painting than his previous books. The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. This arrangement is designed for players of an intermediate / advanced standard. The balance of the arrangements relies on the accompanying parts not over powering the main melody and should remain smooth unless marked. Repeating bars 5-11 is optional on the D.S. doing the repeat lengthens the arrangement by approx. 30sec. Alternative Tenor horn in Eb, Trombone in Bb Treble clef and Bass in Eb included.

Labour and Love (1913) by Percy E. Fletcher was originally scored for a British brass band. This included an Eb soprano cornet, 4 Bb cornet parts (with a fluegel horn double in one part), 4 Eb tenor horn parts, 2 Bb baritone parts, euphonium, 2 tenor trombone parts, bass trombone, an Eb bass part and a Bb bass part. All the parts excepting the trombones were written in treble clef. This arrangement, while attempting to preserve the original style and flavor, has been adapted for the contemporary American brass ensemble.
