This charming, thought-provoking chamber opera is set during the Second World War, and tells the story of Stanislaw Hempel, a Polish chemist and revolutionary socialist, who came to Scotland in 1943 attached to the Polish Armed Forces in the West. The opera was commissioned by the University of Edinburgh School of Chemistry to celebrate its Tercentenary year in 2013. The other characters in the opera are Chrissie Miller (a trailblazer for gender equality in the sciences) and James Kendall (an expert in chemical warfare). The opera received its premiere in the Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, Scotland on 24 October 2013 in a production supported by Scottish Opera and conducted by Derek Clark.This volume contains the complete libretto, introductory notes, and a performable piano/vocal reduction of the orchestral score.

He spent his later years in Long Melford, Suffolk, where he wrote this poem in 1964: the mill-pond in the centre of the village reminded him of events of nearly 50 years previously, still clearly etched in the his mind. Bullard’s setting responds to this powerful imagery with troubled simplicity in the outer sections framing anguished memories of the battlefield at the central climax, making a telling recital piece railing at the futility of war.

This extended through-sung song cycle was composed at the request of the remarkable Turkish-Australian soprano, Ayse Goknur Shanal, to include in a 2015 recital program by her to commemorate the 100th anniversary of origin of ANZAC, being the date Australian & New Zealand armed forces entered into combat in WW1.  The date is focused annually to commemorate those Australians who have served & those who have died in war.For the words I located some striking, even emotional, poems by Leon Gellert who, as a poet & a Lance Sergeant with the 10th Battalion, landed at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April 1915. Wounded by shrapnel, and suffering from septicaemia and dysentery, he was evacuated to Malta in July and thence to London. He was repatriated and discharged medically unfit on 30 June 1916.Gellert created his overseas verse. Songs of a Campaign (1917) which was hailed by the Bulletin as one of the best verse collections to have come out of the war in the English language; it won the Bundey prize for English verse, and, before the year was out, Angus & Robertson Ltd published a third and enlarged edition, illustrated by Norman Lindsay.Ms Shanal premiered These Men in the recital collection curated by her in April 2015.  In 2016 she recorded the complete program to CD. In 2018 & 2019 she gave performances of the program in the Melbourne Recital Centre, Sydney Opera House & other venues throughout eastern Australia & Germany. It was in the aftermath of the 2020 summer bushfires in Australia that soprano Ayse Goknur Shanala rang me from Cyprus to suggest I compose a work about climate change, a subject of concern for me.  My research for lyrics did not elicit anything I considered suitable, so I turned to Derek Dowding, a local poet, singer, actor, raconteur, and a person vitally interested in the future of humanity and of the planet.Derek and I had worked together before – he brilliantly performed the role of Abelard in the workshopping and concert performances of my hybrid opera “Abelard and Heloiseâ€, which, in 1997, won the supreme CONDA (City of Newcastle Drama Award)  for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Newcastle Theatre’ against some 200 other stage productions in Newcastle’s bi-centenary year.Derek worked long and late on the lyrics for the work, producing an emotional document covering history, cause and effect.  His words produced musical responses from me which I consider react appropriately to both his words and the subject matter. I hope our listeners will agree.For the musical treatment I had to consider that the length of the work, through-sung, 20+ minutes, required a recurrent grounding to avoid too many thematic ideas getting in the way of the words.  To that end, I created a quasi-reflective section which appears, rondo-style, quite a few times during the length of the piece.  And, for further cohesion, I built an ABA (ternary) section early to address certain word structures.  Mostly, the various sections followed the stanza structure provided by Derek, with some combinations.  My musical style is essentially melodic, but with dramatic and other episodes, be they tonal, astringent, harmonically indecisive and so on.  In building the work I was principally influenced by the impact and flow of the words.The work is quite mammoth for both the singer and the pianist.  I was absolutely delighted that Anna Fraser again premiered a work of mine – in 2015 she marvellously premiered another major composition of mine, reviewed here:  http://soundslikesydney.com.au/reviews/concert-review-the-man-in-the-other-roomacacia-quartetanna-fraser/19830.htmlWe can only hope that the new work ultimately adds to the chorus of warnings and concern about the climactic future that awaits if we continue to ignore or postpone dramatic and urgent attention to addressing the causes of climate change.A living orb cloaked white and blue and greenRevolving and evolving, tight-hugged in orbit flightWe ride her back; dependent, fragile offspring.Suckling all the while …but have we bonded?A world unlike any other world we’ve seenGifted with Water, Air, Earth and perfect Light.The essentials of life. The libretto is comprised of the insightful observations of a young Jewish boy—Abraham “Abramek” Koplowicz—who was trapped by the Nazis in the Lodz ghetto and who later died in Auschwitz. The libretto appears before each scene in the scores.This may be a relatively brief piece, but it is a major one for me and posthumously for the author. I am fortunate to be the only person given blanket gratis permission to set the words of Abraham Koplowicz to music. He composed a book of poetry, plays, and artwork while imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto before perishing later in Auschwitz before he could become a Bar Mitzvah. The contents of that book are quite good, sophisticated for his age. Abraham's late half-brother, Eliezer Grynfeld—who found the book in the 1990s—and I eventually became good friends. The Pope once kissed Eliezer's hand. That is how highly regarded this collection is and, by some stroke of luck or fate, I have got exclusive musical rights to the book until it enters the public domain. In my settings of AT THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT and TO GET A RATION, I combine the musical language of Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW very nearly with the instrumentation of Stravinsky's A SOLDIER'S TALE - only the percussion instruments differ. The musical language of these brief opera scenes is appropriately terse, very much in keeping with the oppressiveness of imprisonment. Please have a look and a listen. In the past, singers wishing to audition for this role would have to make a series of awkward cuts to eliminate the gaps and additional page space created by the choral parts when performing this excerpt. The current edition omits those passages and also places a cut in the cabaletta portion, reducing the page count to 6 and creating a cut suitable for a recital or audition environment. All cuts are marked with asterisks in both the voice part and piano reduction. The piano reduction itself has not been simplified or drastically altered (at the commissioner's request), nor have ornaments been added, although the engraving features minor changes from the original edition (eliminating syllabic beaming and re-dividing a few tuplets for easier reading). The project received funding from the Norwegian Arts Council and Hljóðritasjóður RannÃs, and an album of nine recorded songs, Ótal stjarna hröp, was released in 2023.

As Roderick Dhu and his warriors ascend the mountain, he hears Ellen, accompanied by the harpist Allan-bane, singing a prayer to the Virgin Mary, pleading for help. Roderick Dhu pauses momentarily before heading into battle.The song is said to have been first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria, and was dedicated to her, earning her the nickname the lady of the lake.The repeated use of Ave Maria in Ellen's song likely inspired the adaptation of Schubert's melody to fit the full text of the traditional Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. This adaptation has become so widespread that it often leads to the mistaken belief that Schubert originally composed the melody specifically for the Ave Maria prayer.This arrangement is for low voice and piano.

Commissioned by Julia Carey and Juventas Ensemble, this duet was premiered in early July of 2021 by Kelley Hollis, soprano, James Dargan, baritone, and Julia Carey, piano as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. The title of the concert was Yearning to Breathe Free. Julia conceived of the idea of combining Dr. King's I've been to the mountaintop speech with Julia Ward Howe's Battle Hymn of the Republic, however, the rights to Dr. King's speech weren't made available in time. As a result, the composer wrote a poem based on the portion of Exodus to which King alluded in his famous speech, in which Moses is giving a final speech to the Israelites from Mount Nebo. He knows he won't be allowed to cross over, and so he urges his people to be courageous as they continue on without him. The opening is very dissonant, because the images of a terrible swift sword unleashing fateful lightning struck me as terrifying. After commanding the heavens to let him speak, Moses also acknowledges his fear, as well. As the piece progresses, the familiar Battle Hymn Melody appears, as does Go Down Moses.James Dargan, for whom the piece was written, has an unusual range. Alternate notes are provided, as a result. The piece starts at about 1:18:10 of the concert, which can be found on the Juventas website.

The narrator finds that the love makes them a better person, and they live on quietly as life keeps moving forwards.Guðfinna Jónsdóttir (1899–1946) from Hömrum was an organist and poet who lived a quiet and isolated life in Northern Iceland. She wrote beautiful poems about her life, filled with with tragedies, death and unrequited love. In her own time her work wasn't well known outside of her hometown, and today she is more or less forgotten.In collaboration with the singer Helga Ragnarsdóttir, the composer Knut Rygnestad has set several of her poems to music for voice and piano, with the aim of making them better known in Iceland and throughout the world. The project received funding from the Norwegian Arts Council and Hljóðritasjóður RannÃs, and an album of nine recorded songs, Ótal stjarna hröp, was released in 2023.
