I found the Emily Dickinson poem in early 2014 while searching for inspirational texts. After the first read, I knew I would like to set it to music someday. Later that summer I came across a composition contest that was looking for a piece about success/belief/hope. I started putting music to the text in late September. In October my mother was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer and she passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. Her passing affected me in ways I never expected. Music went from being the thing in which I could find solace, to the thing that reminded me of my mother's absence. I found myself unable to write my own music for quite some time. During the Lenten season of 2015, one of the Pastors at the church for which I work gave a sermon using this text. The sermon was particularly moving and I decided it was time to revisit the piece. The music was finished within 1 week. Just as my mother had done for me countless times, writing this piece gave me the hope and inspiration I needed to get through a difficult time in my life. I dedicate this work to my mother, Cynthia Marie Richards.

This piece is a great study for executing triplets, thirds and stride piano style and also an impressive recital number. Finished just before the England v Panama world cup match on a very hot Sunday in June. Glad to say I haven’t actually had any triplets recently but I thought the title was as good as any for this piece. There are optional fingerings included for tricky passages.

When the minor chords take over and the melody begins to fall, a contemplative, tearful section begins, only to be interrupted by a confident rhythm. The 11/8 time signature conveys unsteadiness, but as it continues and grows, it becomes steady and powerful. Finally, the main theme returns in exuberance--the true form of a resilient spirit. As the music comes to a close, the final chord is a major seventh, not minor--good has triumphed over evil--and the notes float up heavenward to the final resting place--it is finished; having persevered, the soul has earned its peaceful rest.

In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. Published by POLYHYMNIA Ediciones musicales (A0.1029293). Perfil del ánima (Profile of the anima), Op. 86 is a solo cello piece written in a single movement. It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

It begins with an opening statment of the 3 ritornelli that will reappear after each solo, duet, trio or quartet from the soloists. In this way, the composer prepares the listener for what will come and it will therefore be familiar and recognisable in the context of the song.This ia also one of the most demanding songs in the book. It requires a set of four solo singers (Trumpet/Horn/Trombone/Tuba) a pair of obbligato violins (Eb trumpet and Bb trumpet) and a string+ keyboard continuo part (Trumpet/Horn/Euphonium/Tuba) making 10 instruments in all. I had to use an Eb trumpet as the range of the obbligato is quite adventurous for the period and covers some of the clarino range that was to become popular in the High Baroque.At 5 minutes in length, this is a great finisher for either hafl of a concert, especially as Monteverdi has reserved use of all the instruments/voices until the very end, creating a rousing finish.The seventh book continues to be a challenge. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, this song is exquisitely crafted and travels well onto brass.

This was done, in part, to make available concert band literature that utilizes jazz/rock instruments (guitar, bass, piano) and improvisation. There are many arrangements of rock and pop tunes available to band directors. While those arrangements sometimes include bass parts they rarely, if ever, have guitar or piano/keyboard parts. Why not? Why not include these parts, even if they are optional? In addition, I’ve noticed that there is very little concert band literature that involves improvisation. Again, why not? I believe that this is the concert band literature of the future – the integrated utilization of electric guitar, keyboards, and improvisation. This piece is my first attempt at such a venture. Having just finished the premier performance of the original jazz ensemble version of 7 to 9 I thought it would be a good platform. Most of 7 to 9 transitions between 7/4 and 9/4. It is a fun, quirky piece with a Latin feel. There is a short 5-bar swing section in the middle for open solos. There is also a one chord solo section later in the piece for less experienced improvisers. The students will really enjoy putting this together, especially with the electric guitar, piano, and bass. It adds a completely new dimension to the concert band as well as an overall excitement. The piece ends with a long building Latin groove with a jam feel to it. The guitarist ends this build with an improvised solo which soars above the rest of the band. It is a fun piece to play but requires a great deal of focus due to the changing meter and odd phrase lengths and entrances. There is only a midi recording available at this time. This is the largest song so far. It is very complex and was originally composed as a Soprano solo with a 9-part 'orchestra' split into three unequally sized 'choirs'. Choir 1 consisted of two cittarones (a kind of theorbo or archlute), a clavicembalo (early harpsichord) and a spinet. Choir 2 comprised a string orchestra (viole da brazza, violins, viole da braccia, clavicembano (sic) and basso continuo). Choir 3 comprised individual instruments viola da braccio or gamba, basso da braccio or gamba, contrabass and an (unnamed) keyboard. As you might imagine, this was well nigh impossible to reduce to 5 players, so I have transcribed it for 9 brass instruments, more or less keeping to the original 'choir' groupings with a trumpet/cornet solo line. This is also one of the longest songs so far. I hope you enjoy the result. The text translates as: How softly, scented lips, I kiss you or listen to you. The poet is describing his inability to both kiss and hear his beloved's voice at the same time. I finally finished my first work on this list, one that's been on my hard drive in one version or another since 1999 (that's 24 whole years!).Las Follias de España (which despite its name, originally came from Portugal) is a chord progression usually in either D minor or G minor in the form of i-V-i-VII-III-VII-i-V. Composers for the last 500 years have used this chord progression to come up with some fantastic theme and variations, ranging from unaccompanied works, trio sonatas, to even full orchestral implementations. You can spend a looooong time listening to all the beautiful compositions that composers have made over the centuries highlighting this very captivating set of chords.I humbly submit my own version of La Folia in D minor for String Trio and Cembalo (harpsichord). I wrote my first version of this in my senior year of High School as a challenge to myself to write music in a genre I loved. I made updates here and there over the years, but its sat on a hard drive the entire time. It's taken me months to essentially rework it to my satisfaction and has been submitted for copyright. I have uploaded it to YouTube to share with others.BIG SHOUT OUTS to the three composers that inspired me in this work:Corelli: - His version of La Folia is probably the most popular for violinists, especially those that play out of the Suzuki books. I included a modified version of his Folia (Variation 9) in my work (with all other parts being vastly different from his interpretation) as an homage to his work.J.S. Bach - He showed me that music can be as intelligent as it is beautiful. I have two variations inspired by his work. Variation 8 is one that I wrote this year (2023) which I wanted to write for a long time is a variation that showcases the Harpsichord. Bach's keyboard works and unaccompanied violin works inspired me here. Second, Variation 14 I feel has Bach's inspiration all over it. The violin parts are each playing separate distinct melodies in double counterpoint which trade parts on the repeat. The bass line follows a pattern that Bach has employed for the bass on a number of Violin concertos and lastly, the Harpsichord treble part is a mensuration canon based on one of the violin parts, with the keyboard part playing the melody 4x as fast with variations. Lastly on a play of numbers, number 14 was a very special number for Bach, and as a tribute, I've made this the 14th variation in my work. This was also a new variation I added this year (2023) as well.Vivaldi - My first musical love. I feel that I captured a little bit of his musical DNA in all my works and this piece showcases this. Vivaldi's works is what made me fall in love with Baroque music and I am indebted to him for the profound impact his works have had on my life.So here you go. 413 measures. It's a typical slushy romantic poem of the time and Monteverdi gives it some special treatment indeed. Originally for 'two voices (unspecified) two violins and basso continuo (now a standard part of any accompaniment) I have chosen to arrnage it for Two horns, Two Trumpets/Cornets, two trombones (baritone/euphonium) and tuba.The range of the violin parts is quite small, so it fits rather well on the trumpets. Of course, we are in the era when music was apt to be composed to fit any combination of instruments and so all the ranges would have to be similar to enable this to happen. I decided to give the duet lines to the horns.The seventh book continues to be a challenge. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. Anyway, we got Audree [the Wilson brothers' mother], who was putting her hair up before bed, and we played it for her. She said, 'That's the most beautiful song you've ever written.' Murry said, 'Not bad, Usher, not bad,' which was the nicest thing he ever said to me. Gary Usher (who co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Wilson) further describes that Brian was always saying that his room was his whole world. Brian seconds this opinion: I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you're not afraid when you're in your room. It's absolutely true. In 1990, Brian wrote, I also enjoyed producing 'In My Room'. There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room', there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse...and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death.

Movement 1, marked Assertively, q = 100 is a moderately fast movement with highly syncopated rhythms of eighth and 16th notes in quadruple meter and supported mostly by the drum set. Movement 2, which is approached by metric modulation with no pause from movement 1 is marked Slowly and Sweetly, q = 66. It features mostly vibraphone. Movement 3 is marked Spirited, dotted quarter note = 100. In the second century AD, Artemidoro de Daldis (135-200), a very cultured man who had traveled a lot, contemporary of Emperor Marco Aurelio, wrote in Ephesus his work Symbolism of Dreams (Oneirocritica). In it he tried to create a systematic theory for the interpretation of dreams, based on experience. Artemidoro claimed that he had written his work in five volumes by express order of the god Apollo, who had appeared several times in his dreams. In his fascinating book he distinguishes five kinds of dreams: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. Artemidoro’s book, Op. 63, is a work for guitar in five movements, which take their titles as the kinds of dreams mentioned above: Dream, Vision, Oracle, Appearance and Fantasy. It is an extensive composition, 19 minutes long, and with a great variety of compositional and instrumental techniques: the performer, who is asked for a lot of versatility and imagination, has to play glissandi, harmonics, pizzicati, bells, loops, metric modulations, ordinary and muted strokes, microtones, distortions, various kinds of bumps in the box, etc. The five movements share a special scordature and the same melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material, which is transformed according to the dreamlike atmosphere of the piece, but always maintaining each of the structural elements a recognizable identity. The multiple presences of these essential identities throughout the work articulate the complex form of the Book. I finished the composition of The Book of Artemidoro on April 24, 2006. The work is dedicated to guitarist José Guerola, who premiered it at the Vivanco Palace in Catarroja (Spain), on May 5, 2006.

It was a great experience working on this piece together as we learnt how to incorporate each of our own ideas into the piece as well as work together through sections. It was great to share ideas with each other and get feedback from one another on how this or that could be improved or changed which ultimately led to a better finished product.The idea we had in mind for this piece was an anime opening which was inspired by the anime Steins;Gate. The first page includes a calm but mysterious intro followed by a chordal pattern called constant structure that leads into a lyrical melody in the right hand while the left hand continues the chordal pattern. The pace is picked up on the second page where there is a great contrast from the first page. We spent a lot of time on the second page, paying attention to each and every bar to make sure it flowed well and added something new and exciting to the piece. We also used the Royal Road Chord progression in this section as it is a common progression heard in anime music.

Premiered in St George's Bristol, September 2019. “And then we see†is dedicated to the wonderful people I have met throughout my journey in Wellington School, especially to two of my very good friends – Simon, a euphonist; and Leo, a ‘cellist. Originally planned to be written for Piano, ‘Cello and Euphonium, and to be finished and performed in our last school concert as a goodbye gift, I had however not managed to complete the work before graduation. I have therefore taken this opportunity to express my emotions and sentiments from the time with this newly written piece. One can therefore very easily sense the nostalgia pouring right from the very beginning of the music, as I reminisce our years together. It is based loosely on a ternary structure (ABA) – the A section depicts the moment of farewell. One can hear the violin plays a very simple, bell-like melody, representing the bell-strikes which signify that it is the end of a long journey – time to say goodbye. The B section, based on the very same melody, transforms itself into a 6/8 dance. This dance depicts the pang and melancholia as we bid farewell, leading to a passionate climax. The A section then returns with the melody in its original form, announced by the horn. The coda concludes the piece, trying to move away from the tonic, representing the start of a new chapter in our journey and our optimistic feelings about it. Throughout the piece there are also quotes from the famous Westminster chimes, and variants of it, enforcing the bell imagery.
