Sonata Simplice (Simple Sonata) was composed for Alison Eales and Anna le Hair and premiered in Hitchin outside London on September 3, 2022. The piece takes shape in the first movement from utilization of motifs that comprise the opening thematic material, rather than an iconic theme. Comprising three movements, the second movement references the English folksong The Fair Flower of Northumberland. Set in 6/8 meter the movement is marked: Lento e cantabile, leggiero simplice (Slow and singing, lightly simple) enhancing the overall title of the piece. The final movement is lively and dancelike with both static and changing meters. This delightful offering will add to any adult recital, and is attainable by accomplished high school students as well. Six Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano were composed in March, 2020 for Beethoven 250. They are drawn from Beethoven piano music. The sources are piano sonatas, bagatelles, and a landler. With my ever faithful friend and collaborator, London Clarinetist Alison Eales in mind, I sought to add to the Clarinet repertoire. Having written five pieces over the past two years in English manner for Clarinet (English Sonatina, English Autumn, London Concerto, Enchanted London, Postcards from England), a tip of the hat to the Austrian Titan seemed appropriate. Beethoven, unlike Mozart before him and Brahms after him, wrote no solo music for Clarinet. The Trio and scoring in Symphonies are his unique contributions to the repertoire. Beethoven was a contemporary of Weber who wrote extensively for solo Clarinet. With most of the passages being arrangements, my original homage passages frame the settings and are juxtaposed with them. The tone of the music is one of homage and recollection with no intent to imitate or parody the great master. Bagatelles are by nature lighter fare of shorter duration. Hence no long, authentic passages with inherent mood swings and elaborations. By adapting the music to the bagatelle form, it reflects the less ponderous side of the composer. Although Beethoven’s music is capable of great depth and despair, the more transcendent, pastoral, and exuberant moods prevail in these pieces. The final two movements, Recitative and Rondo, draw on the Waldstein Sonata and Emperor Piano Concerto, and Sonata Op 2 No3 as well. The Rondo theme is in Eb, my own, is reminiscent of the Emperor Concerto in it intense yet lilting motif. Perhaps the listener will hear hints of Weber, a clarinet favorite of mine, as well in this final movement. Two movements are scored for Clarinet in A, and four movements for Clarinet in Bb.

Haydn's chordal spacing, articulation (fz, fp, staccatos), pungent dissonant half steps, and melismatic passages come to life in the inherent versatility of the clarinet family. This is not a piano transcription. Clarinet style figurations are chosen from the piano ones. The range is up to high G in the first Clarinet and Bass Clarinet range is form low E (C also if possible) to high G on the first space above the treble clef. Scored for 3 Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet.

The influences and moods of the heritage cultures are savored in the reminiscent character of this short piece. Hints of Debussy, Poulenc, Vaughn Williams and Ligeti are heard in the sonorous combination of three clarinets.

Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913624). English Autumn was composed in Fall/Winter 2018-2019 for Clarinetist Allison Eales commissioned by the Gregynog . Scored for Clarinet in A and String Trio it reflects the collage of Autumn colors: Green, Yellow, Brown shades of first Autumn; Red, Orange of Autumn at its peak. It followed my English Sonatina for young clarinetists premiered by Alison Eales and Anna de Hair in London in January, 2019, and was premiered in London in October, 2019. This piece reflects the heightened emotions of fiery intensity reflected in the changing of the colors of the leaves in Autumn. Reflected as well is the serene beauty before the Autumn arrives, and the resignation of the eternal cycles of nature. The opening section (Andante) evokes the feeling of nostalgia and assurance of the inevitable cycle of nature. We know the life will go from the tress only to return again next season. We feel the joy of the intense colors of the foliage, and the sadness of the loss of life in winter. This section segues into Green (Adagio cantabile) with pastoral music and quotes of The Water is Wide and I pass all the hours in a shady grove of Pelham Humphrey. This leads into Red (Allegro con fuoco/Presto), followed by Orange (Declamando) as well as absence of color when the leaves all fall. I pass all the hours is a song by Pelham Humphrey with words by Charles II: I pass all the hours in a shady grove …When I see the print of her shape in the green…I think there’s no hell like loving too well, The melody is incorporated because it is the same melodic motif of the Scherzando movement of my English Sonatina for young clarinetists which Alison Eales and Anna de Hair premiered. I discovered it after composing that piece in researching English folk songs to refer to in this piece. It is an ideal segue into the Allegro con fuco/Presto music. The final section (Andante cantabile) is my personal melodic sequence from the rising motif of Over the hills and far away.

Published by James Marshall Music (A0.913632). Septet for Brass is one of the earliest compositions of this composer. It echoes the sentiments of the  Cold War late 1960s in its bold, brass gestures of confidence and elan. Set in traditional three movement form, the opening Allegro heralds the return to decorum following the upheaval of the decade. The secondary theme is reminiscent of the English lyricism of Vaughn Williams. This sentiment returned to the pen of this composer in recent years in compositions commissioned by London clarinetist Alison Eales. This score originally from 1969 was edited during the Pandemic of 2020-2021. Andante is a lamenting chorale played by the Tuba laced by haunting melismas suggesting the drawn out moods in the music of Shostakovich. The final Rondo is spirited with a theme in 9/8 (3/4 + 3/8) with subsequent sections of mix meter and pulsating textures. Instrumentation is 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba.

Loops, Mosaics, Images and Patterns for mallet percussion ensemble and electric piano relies heavilyon repeated patterns and textures sustainable by these instruments. Loops is constructed from motifs establishedby each instrument. Each motif loops around, overlapping each other to create a musical texture. Mosaics and Images were begun after a reunion trip to Washington, DC. Mosaics recalls the jazz music of Miles Davis I would listen to it on hot summer evenings with the windows open. The Sketches of Spain album. Later I visited Barcelona the home of bothGaudi and Picasso. Images must have been a premonition. It was only after I saw the exquisite stained glass windows of the Gaudi Sagrada Familia that I was able to complete this movement. Patterns is just that. Changing patterns in my own fashion. A colleague suggested substituting a fourth marimba for second xylophone in this movement to provide a more mellow texture.

It was premiered on October 9, 2021 on their first concert since the CoronavirusPandemic. Set in four movements it came to mind when the ensemble premiered English Autumnin October, 2019. Having visited London several times, I had yet to experience the Changing of the Guard andrain was forecast for Sunday following the Saturday night concert. The skies were clear and I so enjoyedthe day an though how enchanting London is. The opening Prelude captures the excitement of the city.Soliloquies is in 3/4 time and heard in the sample recording. Promenade and Finale round out the suite.
