The Twenty-four Exercises for Two Cellos, Op. 159, by Johann Justus Friedrich Dotzauer, continue and conclude the series dedicated to the neck positions. These, alongside the just published Twelve Original Pieces, Op. 58, cover the first four positions in all possible variations, using an incredible richness of forms, melody, harmony, and rhythm. After these thirty-six little gems, your students will be able to face much greater challenges with renewed strength and assertiveness. While Op. 58 focused mostly on Theme with Variations, Op. 159’s most used form is the rounded binary one, while no less than three full-fledged fugues enrich the practicing landscape. Due to the lack of the original manuscript, lost during Steiner & Bell’s acquisition of Augener & Co., this edition is based on two surviving editions, by Carl Hüllweck and Johannes Klingenberg, both published in the first decade of the XX century, about 40 years after Dotzauer’s passing. An underlying tenor ofthis collection is the complex relationship between the earth and humanity, and metaphorically the discordbetween native and colonial peoples. Bynner captures the essence of these relationships in this way:It is the earth itself that hems you round against intruders alien to the earth, that brings you heaven under a shadowy tree, curves heaven toyour arm and lets you lie close to its living thorn. The crown is yours, not theirs. You know the one divinity, the only death, the offering ofthe heart to the cruel earth, the love, the consummation.The three movements of the work progress from a quiet melancholy to exuberance, from darkness to light. Frahm makes use of an architecturalapproach to music composition in this piece, as in the building of an adobe wall brick by brick. Self-contained musical structures, often in four barunits, are symmetrically arranged as a technique of musical development. The final movement, 'Alleluias', is based in part on plainchant tone 6 fromthe Graduale Romanum.

In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind. The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christ’s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale.The second stanza declares God’s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

In keeping the melodic material as non-specific as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, something that would be much more difficult with a composition that dictates the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic phrasing. It also allows the user to read the exercises in any key signature, making this a great tool to help students learn to think in different keys. The unpredictability of these exercises also forces the user to process every note and rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition or melodic and harmonic tendencies to help in figuring out the notes and rhythms. While I absolutely agree that the skill of predicting music’s direction from harmonic and melodic cues is an essential skill for any musician to develop, I think we will all agree that resources for this type of reading practice are already abundant. This collection, on the other hand, is designed to develop the user’s ability to process raw musical data. Once this skill is strengthened and internalized it is my belief that the act of reading more predictable and typically melodic music will be made much easier as the processing of notes and rhythms will be second nature, allowing the musician to focus on musicality. This book is a supplement to practising sight-reading using real music, not a replacement; I encourage you to use both. If this material is being used to practice sight-reading, it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Read each exercise in all 15 key signatures from 7 flats to 7 sharps. Practice key changes by writing in a different key signature for each system. Increase the challenge of the previous exercise by using a metronome on weak beats. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4. In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

This book has been prepared for the purpose of doing self-accompanied music reading (solfeggio) practice. For this, 70 pieces were designed; with these pieces, it is aimed to develop multi-layered thinking and hearing elements in music. The four parts in the book, which are sorted according to the level of difficulty, are written on a single string, the notes with the stems downwards are accompanied by the notes, and the ones that upwards belong to the reading party. The accompaniment of the pieces is sometimes considered as a single sound, chord, or rhythmic structure, and sometimes as a combination of these structures. The accompaniment, which comes as a rhythmic structure in the 2nd and 4th chapters, is written with rhythmic notation on a separate staff.The accompaniments of the pieces in the first part can be played with instruments such as the piano or guitar, where two or three voices can be played at the same time and music can be played while performing, while the accompaniments are designed only as a rhythm for the parts in the second part can be played by hitting them with the hand or another instrument.The pieces in the third part were written in a way that the upper part can be read when the lower part is played and the lower part is read when the upper part is played, considering the translatable counterpoint technique, thus 4 working ways are derived from one piece. The monophonic accompaniments of the pieces in this section can also be played with instruments that can be read while playing.The fourth chapter of the book contains pieces that combine the understanding of the first two chapters, which can be called advanced when compared to the other chapters.The pieces in the book were read many times with students from different age groups at different levels, and their interpretations contributed to the shaping of the pieces. It is thought that the book, which includes studies that can help with simultaneous melody/rhythm hearing, reading scores, or rhythmic analysis, will contribute to the development of multi-layered thinking and hearing in music by making accompanying music reading studies on its own, and this is a basic requirement for every musician.
