Laflamme ©2012 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2* Humility seeks to draw attention to the Advent portion of the holiday season. This programmatic composition seeks to create an aural picture of the atmosphere both physically and spiritually in the eastern world B. C. and then try and connect it to Christmas traditions today. Students will really enjoyed rehearsing and performing this piece because of it’s programmatic nature, use of a plethora of percussion as well as some unusual uses of and combinations of instruments. Piccolo flute in the low register, soprano saxophone, open tom drums and oboe to create some Middle Eastern ambiance. Then, in order to create ‘the land of the shadow of death’ some unusual techniques call for whispers through instruments, french horns ringing their hands in and out of the bell, flutes playing on the head joints only, attaching a tenor saxophone mouthpiece to a euphonium and a baritone saxophone mouthpiece to a sousaphone. Add some trumpets and trombones playing only on their lead pipes and double reeds buzzing on just the reed and a haunting canvas to build the chaos of a world without salvation is created. Then, with the calming of the piano to present an extremely stark and hallow arrangement of the 7th century antiphon Veni Immanuel, ‘O Come, O Come Immanuel’ which crescendos to the coming of the savior at measure 128 precipitates the a highly antiphonal arrangement of ‘Joy to World.’ While this piece has some characteristics of ‘novelty band music’ there are plenty of technical demands that must be met in order to make it a legitimate concert band literature selection. *THE HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION®. UPC: 749193012437.Beginning with a quiet treble ostinato figure inspired by the lyrics in heaven the bells are ringing, the ringing grows in intensity until it bursts forth with the first statement of the traditional English carol, Ding, Dong, Merrily on High. A second appearance of the heavenly bells is accompanied by chords using the echo technique. The carol is then combined with the 16th century Swedish tune Tempus Adest Floridum (Gentle Mary Laid Her Child; Good King Wenceslas). The heavenly bells ring one last time to conclude this joyful setting.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1373417). I originally wrote Total Eclipse as an expressive Art Song for solo voice and piano. Â I used several lines of poetry from Newburgh Hamilton (1741) and set them to unique music that is a fusion of Classical, Romantic, and Modern, with a touch of Pop. Â The music expressively drifts from major to minor to modal every few measures, inspired by the themes of darkness and light. Â When I adapted it for SATB I filled out the already rich harmony and added ethereal 'oo's under some of the melody. Â In a few brief measures, at different places, SAB each will have a divisi line where it splits to 2 parts. Â (The texture is never thicker than 5 parts at once.) Â This approachable piece of music is a good introduction for singers to the interpretation of an Art Song and is a dramatic performance piece for concert. Â And perfect for the upcoming April 8 total eclipse!(Haydn also used variations of this text to create several Recitatives and an Aria for his oratorio Samson.) Â 10 pages, 2:00 minutesVocal Ranges: Â all 1 octave; Sop - middle C to C; Alto - low G to G; Tenor - D to C; Bass - G to Gattached recording is of the original solo voice version which SATB is closely based on.
