Hard Candy Christmas is a song written by composer-lyricist Carol Hall for the musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.Near the end of the original play, individual girls of the brothel sing lines of the verses as they are preparing to leave; they join together on the refrains. This pattern was adopted for the film version of the musical, except that Dolly Parton (who played Miss Mona) is featured as soloist on the refrains, with the girls accompanying her. A further alteration can be found on the soundtrack album for the film in which Parton alone sings the verses. This version was developed from the original 1977 sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. The verse with the lyric Won't you come along with me / To the Mississippi... was later added by Glenn Miller and Jack Teagarden. The Basin Street of the title refers to the main street of Storyville, the red-light district of early 20th-century New Orleans, north of the French Quarter. It became a red light district in 1897. In 1931, Alberta Nichols wrote the music and Mann Holiner wrote the words for a song titled Till the Real Thing Comes Along which was featured in a Broadway revue titled Rhapsody in Black. The review, produced by Lew Leslie, was similar to the famous Blackbirds reviews of the late 1920s and 1930s, and featured Ethel Waters, who introduced Till the Real Thing Comes Along. I've Told Every Little Star is a 1932 composition by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein from the musical Music In the Air. Unfortunately, it suffers from many poor performances, particularly the awful Linda Scott 1961 hatchet job which changed both the melody and words to attract a teenage audience. The tune has a standard 32-bar AABA form. Many of the standard performances (Bing Crosby's, for example) use a simple set of changes in the A sections that stay close to the tonic; these are the original changes (as per the lead sheet in The Ultimate Fake Book). This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements.
