Published by Michael John Mollo Publishing (A0.1361774). In 2005 I was privileged to study music composition at the College Conservatory of located at The University of Cincinnati. One of the pieces I presented for my master's thesis was this, '3 Pieces for Solo Piano'. The pieces are intended to stand on their own or be performed together as a suite. In 2005 I was very much interested in pursuing film music as a career, as such each piece presented here explores a decidedly different thematic concept or combination thereof, in my attempt to learn more about harnessing dramatic expression. 'I. Heroic Western' is my attempt to harness the 'Go-West-Young-Man' spirit of Americana Copland with sprinkles of Gershwin. 'II. Sunken Rag' is an homage to Debussy's 'Sunken Cathedral' if only he had some time to spend with Scott Joplin. III. New Tango' is a play on Argentinian rhythms and simple melodic constructs with chromatic rivers running through the texture.

As a veteran elementary band director,I am keenly aware of what students are able to accomplish at this level. March of the Shadows is a fun, slightlychallenging, and completely achievable work. It is a work that would be useful at the beginning of the school yearwhen it feels too summery to begin holiday music. March of the Shadows would be perfect for a Halloween orAutumn Concert.March of the Shadows begins with a whistle! It calls the show by announcing each new section of the piece. (Astudy of form.) It even reacts to a momentary modulation. The whistle part has all sorts of fun staging potential,including having it played by the director! The initial whistle is followed by a percussion introduction which sets thebeat. Seven percussion parts, three of them optional, have been included so that everyone in a large percussionsection will be kept engaged and out of trouble! The body of the work includes two alternating themes, one dark andshadowy in minor, the other bright, heroic and slightly syncopated in major. Every part gets the melody at somepoint, even the low brass and woodwinds! Ranges are all standard for early second-year band players, i.e. clarinetsdo not go over the break, trumpets do not go higher than middle line B, the snare drum part is sprinkled with basicrudiments such as flams and paradiddles. Even the horn gets a crack at the tune! Every part is fun, interesting andeducational.

While his scores for both 633 Squadron (1963) and Operation Crossbow (1965) had boasted patriotic, major-key themes celebrating the heroics of the protagonists, composer Ron Goodwin took a different approach for Where Eagles Dare, generating his main theme for the picture out of the initial notes of an ascending minor scale. Rather than celebrate the heroics of the screen characters, the title music embodies the single-minded ambition of the protagonists to infiltrate the mountain fortress of Schloss Adler and complete their mission, no matter what the costs. The composer recalled in a 1994 interview that some of this approach came from the filmâ??s director, Brian Hutton. For instance, he wanted music at the beginning of the film but he also wanted to hear the airplane engines approaching from the distance, which is actually why he started off with just the side drums playing quietly and then building up and getting louder, so that you could actually hear the sound of the airplane before the orchestra comes in. After the snare drum and the â??Aâ? section of the main title comes a melodically related fugal section that, the composer told Randall D. Larson in 1984, was an idea that arose from the â??concept of people following each other around and dodging away from each other...[which] gave me the idea of writing a sort of fugue-style theme...and then I used that in various ways for all the sort of creeping and following and chasing that was going on throughout the film.â?Created from the original manuscript, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!
