I was asked to write a piece that would celebrate the possibility of moving towards a better future, inspired by the desire and need to join together as a community in Jacksonville, Florida. Often when we look around and wonder how young people can grow into responsible, caring people in the face of so much adversity, music, and hope become more essential than we can all imagine. We all can unite if we collectively join in a Journey of Hope. -Jim PapulousThe Journey of Hope is scored for SSAB voices, with the baritone part written so that it is appropriate for changing male voices. Accompanimental parts are provided for piano, djembe, cabasa, and bass guitar. The title gives a clue to the focus of the text: a forward-looking view of what we can accomplish together through hope and unity. This inspiring text and infectious rhythms make this a must-have piece for young singers. Duration: 3:25.

This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Floridaon the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferrybarges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fishto provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to beso in the future. The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, thisrepresents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is alinear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you canpicture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. Thesecond strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Triorepresents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have feltknowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts thatwere put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and manysuccesses, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is thecelebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building acity. I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

The Florida Suite is an orchestral suite by English composer Frederick Delius (1862-1934). Despite the work's title, Delius actually composed this suite in Leipzig in 1887 after his time as manager of an orange grove in Jacksonville (Florida). 'By the River' is the second - flowing - movement of the 'Florida Suite. It's illustrating the gentle but perpetual movement of the 'St. Johns River' (on the banks of which was Delius's plantation). The calmness and steady rhythm of this movement guides the listener into a peaceful reflection.

It is a mostly humorous piece aimed at entertaining the audience and the members of the orchestra. I also intended it to be a suitable companion to the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations, also featured on the Jacksonville Symphony's 2014-15 season opener. Keenly aware of Peter's fine soloistic abilities I approached organization of the work around quotations from well known clarinet solos. Key: C major.Sorry I haven't uploaded in a while, truth is, I haven't been inspired to write anything extraordinary lately because this lockdown had me feeling down. Last month I went to visit a friend of mine in Canton, GA, and it inspired me to write this song. It's kind of like one of my earlier compositions Kentucky Hills. Georgia is definitely one of my favorite states, and I absolutely *love* to travel. No matter how long the drive, I will go anywhere if I am determined enough. This was a seven-to-eight hour drive and was definitely worth it. Earlier this year I also drove up to University of Northern Florida in Jacksonville, FL, which is two and a half hours north of me. From there I took a friend up to Jekyll Island, which was beautiful. Speaking of UNF, that is where I am going for my fall term. I'm going to major in music education and also finish my AA up there.
