It is part of the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue (BWV catalogue) of the works of J. S. Bach, and sometimes called the Orchestral Suite No. 5, but was almost certainly not composed by him. It is more likely that the composer was W. F. Bach. It is a French suite with an overture and several dances, which has a similar structure with the 4 orchestral suites by J. S. Bach. But one point making it different from the 4 orchestral suites by J. S. Bach is that it has one movement not in the home key (which is the Aria in E-flat major). The name ouverture refers only in part to the opening movement in the style of the French overture, in which a majestic opening section in relatively slow dotted-note rhythm in duple meter is followed by a fast fugal section, then rounded off with a short recapitulation of the opening music. More broadly, the term was used in Baroque Germany for a suite of dance-pieces in French Baroque style preceded by such an ouverture. This genre was extremely popular in Germany during Bach's day, and he showed far less interest in it than was usual: Robin Stowell writes that Telemann's 135 surviving examples [represent] only a fraction of those he is known to have written;[1] Christoph Graupner left 85; and Johann Friedrich Fasch left almost 100. Bach did write several other ouverture (suites) for solo instruments, notably the Cello Suite no. 5, BWV 1011, which also exists in the autograph Lute Suite in G minor, BWV 995, the Keyboard Partita no. 4 in D, BWV 828, and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831 for keyboard. The two keyboard works are among the few Bach published, and he prepared the lute suite for a Monsieur Schouster, presumably for a fee, so all three may attest to the form's popularity.Scholars believe that Bach did not conceive of the four orchestral suites as a set (in the way he conceived of the Brandenburg Concertos), since the sources are various, as detailed below.The Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue includes a fifth suite, BWV 1070 in G minor. Originally composed for two violins, viola, and basso continuo.I originally wrote this arrangement for a Saxophone Quartet in the classical SATB lineup (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone Sax). However, the second part also works well for Soprano Sax, and the third part can be played by an Alto Saxophone. Apart from a few minor changes, I stayed very true to the original composition. The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. Allegro moderato (E minor)Forlane. Allegretto (E minor)Rigaudon. Assez vif (C major)Menuet. Allegro moderato (G major)Toccata. Vif (E minor) Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.The movements used were Nos.1, 3, 5 and 4 in that order.The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733).Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. This is reflected in the piece's structure, which imitates a Baroque dance suite.Arranged double wind quintet/bass:Oboe 2 is mostly cor anglais, some bars of oboe.Clarinet parts are for Clarinet in A.
