Instrumentation: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 horns in F, 2 bassoons Program note.Nancy Braithwaite, for whom I have written many works - all of them featuring her instrument the clarinet - told me that she was a member of a wind group based on Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat Major, opus 7, for thirteen instruments: two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, four horns, two bassoons, and contrabassoon. I said to Nancy, I should write a piece for that group. She said that was a good idea. I soon discovered that the name of the group is La Rondine, or the swallow. I then remembered that Puccini wrote an opera called La Rondine. So I told Nancy that I might do a little research on the Puccini opera and come up with a piece inspired by thematic snippets I found in the opera. Well, I did not find Puccini’s music that conducive to a transformation into TOL music. Around the same time, I stumbled upon a 27-CD box set of nine operas by the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi. As I was listening to these obscure operas by Vivaldi it dawned on me that I was very attracted to what I was hearing, and it was seeping into my musical thinking in the most natural way imaginable. Very quickly I was hearing things for this work I planned to write for Nancy’s group, and the music just moved along quite smoothly from one movement into another. At the same time I began reading about Vivaldi and his life as a priest, violinist, teacher, impresario, and composer in the city of Venice and other cities nearby. What a fascinating life he led!!! I also discovered in my reading that the city of Venice at that time was called La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia. So, instead of a serenade for ten instruments, my work for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, is called La Serenissima as an homage to Antonio Vivaldi and that glorious city of Venice. This is the twenty-ninth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. The original folk story related in the song was associated with the coming New Year, which, in pre-Christian Ukraine (before 988), was celebrated with the coming of spring in April. The original Ukrainian title translates to the generous one is derived from the Ukrainian word for bountiful (shchedryj), and tells a tale of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the bountiful year that the family will have. I’m happy that i did an arrangement of this magic music. I was trying to save Leontovych’s polyphonic idea and reveal the piano sound at the same time. I hope you like it!

He encounters all sorts of setbacks to his goal, and escapes a large trout who tries to swallow him. He swims for shore, decides he will not go fishing again, and hops home. The music follows his encounter with the trout. Jeremy is represented by the lugubrious fugue theme in the basses, the river by the descending scale pattern and the trout by the descending triplet figures. Every part of the band gets to play something interesting and the music needs to be lively.
