Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day. 5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss. 6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss. 7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared. 8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But... 9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all. Fourth Symphony in E flat major Homage to Beethoven (2003, revised 2021), a Neo-Classical symphony based on Beethoven's sketches for his Tenth Symphony, like a speculative reconstruction. In 1822-1827, the fascinating Tenth Symphony (Biamonti 838) was one of Beethoven’s relatively advanced projects, but still it was at the beginning of its elaboration. The material is not quite abundant, and many secondary features in the concept sketches could have been modified, according to his working habits, should he have lived a few years more. For a true reconstruction, the sketches are too scarce, but they are also too good to be left aside and very stimulating for a composer, especially for one whose formation is indebted to Beethoven and who is willing to pay him homage. I have chosen a Neo-Classical idiom, an approach analogous to Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss (after Tchaikovsky). For such a work, the thorough study of fundamental articles on Beethoven’s projects and sketches (by Barry Cooper, Sieghard Brandenburg, Robert Winter, Martin Staehelin, Nicholas Cook, and Lewis Lockwood) was a necessity. Then, in 2021, the symphony was heavily revised, mainly to make it terser and truer to the sketches and to Classical practices For this symphony, all the thematic material is Beethoven’s, and also the general outline, as much as the latter could be inferred from his sketches. In its revised version, I made use only of the sketches clearly identifiable as intended for the Tenth Symphony and dating from 1822 and later years (most of the themes of its corresponding movements), but also of a few other sketches, most of them contemporary or relatable, unused or intended for other compositions: in the continuation to the second subject group in the first movement, in the second strains of the Presto and of its Trio, and in the transitions and the episodes in the Finale. The symphony has 4 movements and is scored for a normal concert orchestra, including 3 trombones. The revised version makes use also of a contrabassoon, to support the double basses and suggesting a stronger presence of the winds like in the larger scale concerts in the Classical era (usually with doubled winds).Total duration: 34 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 audio clip is a recording of the first movement (Andante-Allegro-Andante).

Key: Eb minor.Horace Silver had not seen the insides of a recording studio for 750 days before laying down Silver 'n Brass. His previous record, In Pursuit of the 27th Man, was unusual in its instrumentation (vibes) and for including a number of non-Silver tunes. (But the cover of Liberated Brother, from that record, did go on to become the backbone of his late 70s live shows.) So, as a prolific composer, Horace had a large backlog of tunes at his disposal as he entered the studio in January, 1975 and the 6 cuts on Silver 'n Brass are among his best. Horace broke the sessions into two: a straight-ahead post-bop session with Ron Carter (whose chubby bass spews artifacts all over the place, in his best late-70s style) and Al Foster on drums and another, more commercial session featuring Bob Cranshaw and Bernard Purdie. Wade Marcus later added horn overdubs employing an absolute who's-who of LA session players. (Word quickly got out among the cognoscenti, and Silver 'n Brass became hugely popular among fellow musicians, much to Horace's delight.) Highlights of the disc include: the composer's propulsive piano solo on Dameron's Dance, young Bob Berg's paint-peeling tenor solos (especially riveting on Kissin' Cousins) and the driving flat 9th chords of Adjustment. The tune Barbara, a gorgeous waltz dedicated to Horace's then-wife, has become a latter-day standard of sorts (Amazon's MP3 store lists a whole bunch of covers). Sophisticated Hippie, a tribute to Duke Ellington, features quite a rhythm-section workout in its closing vamp: this session would be the only time that Horace and Bernard's paths would intersect. There are no vocals this time out, just fully arresting post-bop of a high order.

The libretto is comprised of the insightful observations of a young Jewish boy—Abraham “Abramek” Koplowicz—who was trapped by the Nazis in the Lodz ghetto and who later died in Auschwitz. The libretto appears before each scene in the scores.This may be a relatively brief piece, but it is a major one for me and posthumously for the author. I am fortunate to be the only person given blanket gratis permission to set the words of Abraham Koplowicz to music. He composed a book of poetry, plays, and artwork while imprisoned in the Lodz Ghetto before perishing later in Auschwitz before he could become a Bar Mitzvah. The contents of that book are quite good, sophisticated for his age. Abraham's late half-brother, Eliezer Grynfeld—who found the book in the 1990s—and I eventually became good friends. The Pope once kissed Eliezer's hand. That is how highly regarded this collection is and, by some stroke of luck or fate, I have got exclusive musical rights to the book until it enters the public domain. In my settings of AT THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT and TO GET A RATION, I combine the musical language of Schoenberg's A SURVIVOR FROM WARSAW very nearly with the instrumentation of Stravinsky's A SOLDIER'S TALE - only the percussion instruments differ. The musical language of these brief opera scenes is appropriately terse, very much in keeping with the oppressiveness of imprisonment. Please have a look and a listen. This is a my piano version of 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On'It is mostly in the key of C major but modulates briefly to Eb for the ending. I have arranged it in a stride piano style. This style of music has evolved from the ragtime of Scott Joplin through the early jazz piano players like Fats Waller and James P Johnson. The left hand can be tricky but it can be simplified by replacing the tenths with single bass notes. It's both a cheerful and sentimental tune. I have included chord symbols which I find as useful as the notation when learning a piece. I haven't included pedal symbols, dynamics or fingering - leaving this as a choice for the player and no two pianist ever see eye to eye on these issues in any event!Please note this is a piano solo only and other instruments included in my YouTube video are not notated.

To celebrate this milestone I decided to set a poem by the great British Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins. In my search for a text I came upon his monumental work, The Wreck of the Deutschland. The poem is in two parts. Part The First deals with faith and God. Part The Second concerns the five Franciscan nuns who perished in the sinking of the ship.
