My first string quartet (Korrespondenz) transferred the correspondence between Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at times word by word, to the world of music, whose strong dramatic character effectively reflects the conflicts between father and son. I found the closest literary references to my second string quartet, which takes its listeners to the world of Odysseus and the sirens, in the works of Joyce, Homer and Kafka. The string quartet is enriched with an additional soprano part, which tells the classic story from three different perspectives. The complete title of my second string quartet is The Sirens Cycle, consisting of three movements: Joyce – Homer – Kafka. The twenty-minute-long duration of the first movement of the cycle “Joyce†allows it to be performed independently. This time, the vocal part accompanied by the strings is replaced by a solo clarinet, which – instead of giving a verbal account of Chapter 11 of Joyce’s Ulysses – renders the quite masculine protagonist, Leopold Bloom’s musing over the attractive barmaids with befittingly vigorous musical gestures. He attended All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland and served as first clarinetist in bands led by John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor. Levy led the foreign orchestrating department for Victor Records – which was the first music company to produce the disc record – and was a founder of Belwin Music. Levy compiled a series of photoplay cues for piano that was published in H.S. Gordon’s 1914 Motion Picture Collection. He also wrote songs, the most famous of which was That Naughty Waltz. Sol Paul Levy died in New York in 1920. During the Silent Film Era (1896-1936), showings usually featured live music, which helped to provide dramatic and emotional cues for the audience. The first public silent film shown in 1895 was accompanied by a guitarist. Soon after, films were commonly accompanied by either a pianist, organist, or chamber orchestra. Accompanists often improvised or compiled music from the classical, theatrical or popular repertories using a cue sheet identifying the effects or moods to be conveyed. While some films produced full scores or detailed cue sheets containing excerpts of music unique to that film, a repertoire of generic music soon developed to provide accompanists with music that they could adapt as needed. With titles such as Dramatic Conflict, Dramatic Tension, Heavy Mysterioso, and Weird Oriental Theme, Sol Paul Levy’s scores clearly served this purpose. The Vampire: A Dramatic Theme, composed in 1917, could have been easily adapted to any of the more than twenty films about vampires that appeared between 1909 and 1930. The score exists in three versions: one for small orchestra with piano conductor, one for chamber orchestra without piano, and one for chamber orchestra without timpani. Instruments included piano, flute, clarinet, two cornets, trombone, two timpani, two violins, viola, cello, and bass. Despite being composed for small orchestra, the piece, composed in A minor, is well suited to the guitar once instrumental and octave doublings are removed. While a solo guitar cannot produce the power and volume of a chamber orchestra, it certainly can evoke the intended mood. Except in a few instances owing to the limitations of the guitar, all original dynamic markings have been retained. All fingerings, of course, are editorial. Please note that some of the fingerings in the score may differ than those used in the linked YouTube Video.

In pits and bands all over the world multiple woodwind players, or doublers, are often the unsung heroes of the show. The first one in the pit and the last one out, they bring a technical knowledge of three, sometimes four or five different instrumental traditions not to mention an ability to play in any number of musical styles all in the name of saving the producer a little money. They spend inordinate amounts of time taking lessons, practicing, and dealing with reeds of all shapes and sizes. Over the years the doubler has become an indispensable artist and many top universities and conservatories now offer multiple woodwinds as a major. The Sonata for Multiple Woodwinds and Piano was written for myself and long time friend, colleague, and collaborator, Mark Evans. Professor Evans is a marvelously sensitive and powerfully technical pianist and although the piece is written with myself in mind as the doubler, I owe much of the inspiration to the twenty-plus years I’ve spent making music with Mark. It was my intention to create a sonata for multiple woodwinds that is not a novelty piece but provides the doubler with an opportunity to perform a serious work that explores the expressive and technical boundaries of their instrument(s). By the same token, the pianist is not an accompanist but an equal partner with the doubler.

Twenty years ago, an evil terrorist act was committed. The twin Towers in New York were destroyed by planes. The Pentagon was attacked. A fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. Feelings of shock, grief, horror, confusion, and anger followed in the wake of this senseless destruction. Fire fighters, police, and members of our Armed Services stepped up with great resolve to act as heroes in response to the attacks. Section A begins with the hum of airplanes followed by the for attacks. Section B expresses the various emotions people felt that day. After this section vents a feeling of national rage, it changes to a feeling of militaristic resolve as our troops go off to fight those responsible for the attacks. Section C borrows an American tune from the Civil War and WW1. Every heart is in the fight for the cause of truth and right, And the freedom of our own beloved land. Many people may know it as Jesus loves the little children. The parts not marked in red are meant to be sung in unison. In measure 45, the flutes and oboes play a decant over the melody. Three measures from the end, the band lands on a deceptive cadence followed by the rest of the measures going to the tonic.
