When I began writing Breathe, I was really learning how to connect my breath to movement while practicing Yoga with Adrienne's 30-day yoga journey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpWa4LtKe4c) I was fascinated by how she seemingly slowed the world down for me by asking me to focus on the in and out breath while going through the movements. I was drawn to this meditative practice and was compelled to put this into practice at the piano. I've always been into connecting breath to music, but this was in a different more intentional way. I've always felt that pianists should have more training on connecting their breath to playing. It's too easy for pianists to miss the connection between playing and breath. So I sat down one day and just had this idea of creating a technical exercise for the pianist where not only is the music notated but the breath as well in a way that teaches you how to use your breathe to enhance the music you are playing.

To be classified as a living fossil (or as I like to call it, a Modern Dinosaur), aspecies must have a clear ancestor in the fossil record that highly resembles ourmodern species. Often these species have few living relatives. (For example, theaardvark is currently the only living member of its genus.) People tend to think ofbirds and reptiles when they think of living fossils, but animals from any group canbe classified as such. In this piece, I have sought to explore these differences.Among these uniquely diverse group of animals are the African Lungfish, with itsability to breathe through special lungs, living in hardened clay burrows during thedry season, awaiting the coming rains; the Shoe-Billed Stork, the largest bird offlight with its icy stare and prehistoric appearance, with an aggressively unusualcall; the Alligator, unchanged for millennia, living side by side with it Kingfisherneighbors, not always peacefully; and the Aardvark, the great nocturnal excavatorof Africa.I have long been fascinated by fossils. The urge to learn as much as I could aboutprehistoric animals has never left me, like it does to most around the age of 10.Paired with my love of zoos, being interested in living fossils only makes sense.A portion of all proceeds from Modern Dinosaur will go to the Henry Doorly Zooand Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska. This facility manages the Species SurvivalProgram (SSP) for Aardvarks for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, theprimary accreditation organization for North America animal collections.

Finally at the urging of my friend and soprano, Koren Cowgill, in 2007 I finally set about to complete this task. What grew of this work was the song cycle A Demon in My View. Selecting those poems which had the greatest meaning to me personally I originally set them for voice and piano. In 2021, at the request of my friends Stacy and Tido, I reset the cycle for viola, cello, voice and piano in a new arrangement which I feel breathes fresh life into the moody songs.

When the people of Babel built the tower, they were led by the human spirit and ended up in confusion, scattered over the earth, speaking different languages. At Pentecost, people from many nations, speaking different languages, were led by the Holy Spirit; and even in their diversity, they were united. This 35-minute musical for young voices (Unison w/opt. Two-Part) links together these Old Testament and New Testament stories with songs, humor and heart. The message is, if we follow the Great Commandments - ?loving God and loving our neighbors, no matter how different from us they are or what language they speak - we will surely be filled with the Holy Spirit. A score with piano accompaniment and a singers edition without the piano part are both included for the one price. You may make as many copies as you require for use by your choir. Separate audio MP3s and instrumental parts are available, and there is a video of the debut performance on the Hope YouTube channel.
