Scarborough Fair - arranged for solo guitar by Dan Jones

Scarborough Fair is a much-lovedtraditional English ballad, the text of which dates back to medieval times. Ithas been recorded many times by contemporary artists, most famously, Simon andGarfunkel.

In making thisarrangement I am attempting to create a work suitable for the more-advanced orconcert player. My intention has been to use the original theme to construct apiece with structure and harmonic depth.

Scarborough Fair iscomposed in the beautiful, ambient Dorian mode. It is firstly presented in ADorian and midway, modulates to D Dorian before returning to the original modewith a coda. By adjusting the sixth degree of the scale the theme is also heardin Aeolian mode.

I am excited at theidea of using well-known themes to create a concert repertoire suitable for allenvironments and which will appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike.

I have also triedperforming the piece with a capo placed at the second fret when I have felt myprogramme needed more harmonic variety.

I was lucky enough tobe involved in the recording of the Inspector Morse theme for the debut TVseries in !987. Barrington said he had aimed to capture the Inspector?smelancholy by using the minor key. A brilliant stroke musically was to play onthe surname with a repeated note tapping out the Morse code. When I made thisarrangement of the Morse theme I sent Barrington a pre-recording for hisapproval. I was more than delighted when he replied:
