String Orchestra - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by trad. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 20th Century, European, Patriotic. Score, Set of Parts. 10 pages. Published by Music for all Occasions
Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? They are ALL in my store! All my anthem arrangements are also available for Orchestra, Recorders, Saxophones, Wind, Brass and Flexible band. If you need an anthem urgently for an instrumentation not in my store, let me know via e-mail, and I will arrange it for you FOC if possible! keithterrett@gmail.com<br> <br> Contact Publisher Related ScoresLondonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1298412 Composed by Geraldine (Denny) Green. 21st Century,Chamber,Children,Classical. Score and Parts. 52 pages. Geraldine (Denny) Green at Oakmountmusic #888401. Published by Geraldine (Denny) Green at Oakmountmusic (A0.1298412). ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSWhen I was a young child and I would ask my mother for something she would often, in the midst of all her busy jobs, say to me, “Oh, give me a minuet!â€, meaning jokingly a minute, of course, before she could tend to my wishes.  This meant that I grew up believing that a minuet and a minute meant the same thing and could be equally interchanged. You can then imagine my amazement and amusement at around 13/14 years of age when I discovered through my music studies that a minuet was in fact a type of musical form and dance! Therefore, it went without saying that at some point in my music writing life I just HAD to write my Mum a minuet! So, here is the minuet she so often unwittingly asked me for throughout our lives! She attended the premiere of the Flute, violin and piano arrangement in Bolton, UK, and was highly amused (and not a little chuffed) by the story behind the piece!Naturally, the piece is dedicated to my mother, Margaret (Pearl) Denny, and was finally written in June 2015 for Gary Woolf and the Banda Di Musica in Germany. Its duration is about 7/8 minutes long and it is intended for junior strings. Violins 1 and 2 are of moderate difficulty, while the Violin 3/violas, cellos/basses are simpler. There is a violin solo throughout (moderate difficulty), to be played by the Leader, but is not a concerto-style solo, but rather one that weaves in and out of the texture throughout the piece. The piece is in a minuet and Trio style and is light, tuneful and fun. There are 3 arrangements available:No.1 – School Arrangement: Violins 1, 2 and 3, Cellos 1 and 2No.2 – Standard Arrangement: Violins 1 and 2, violas, cellos, Double bassesNo.3 – Violin, flute and piano.  This arrangement is of a more advanced standard than the string orchestra arrangements and would suit players of approximately grade 7 upwards.

String Orchestra - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.773315 Composed by Yoel Epstein. Arranged by Yoel Epstein. Holiday,Patriotic,Standards. Score and parts. 39 pages. Yoel Epstein #3686423. Published by Yoel Epstein (A0.773315). This volume contains parts for songs for every national US holiday. The songs are arranged for beginning string orchestra (all first position), with additional parts for violin, viola and cello using open strings only. You can purchase the score and one set of parts at https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/20826942 . An accompaniment track is available at https://youtu.be/SlkbjfKBdjc . So you can play this with the accompaniment and any combination of parts. If there are no violists, or if the cello part is too hard for your students, you can play the songs with the accompaniment, and it will sound fine. In fact, I have performed this piece with the violin open string parts only, along with the accompaniment. Please do not make copies of this. I know your project is underbudgeted and you are underpaid, and the photocopier is right down the hall. But this is my livelihood. So please, please, please, buy as many copies as you need. It's really cheap! This is one of the Open String Symphony series of music for string players of mixed skill levels. You can see all the books of the series at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/search?Ntt=Open+String+Symphony These pieces are part of a more complete program for teaching strings in classes. You can read the entire first-year program in the books Playing Together Student Workbook and Playing Together: Teacher's Guide, both available on Amazon: Teacher's Guide: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Together-Teachers-Guide-teaching/dp/1534974598 Student Workbook: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Together-Student-Workbook-2/dp/1535336617 If you enjoy this, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. You can see them at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/search?Ntt=Yoel+Epstein ), In particular, you might be interested in my music flash cards (here). If you need arrangements of any of these songs for special combinations of instruments, feel free to contact me, and I will try to accommodate. Write me at yoelepst@gmail.com. Hope you enjoy.

An accompaniment track is available at https://youtu.be/SlkbjfKBdjc . So you can play this with the accompaniment and any combination of parts. In fact, I have performed this piece with the violin open string parts only, along with the accompaniment. Important: This volume contains the scores and one copy of the parts. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.747131). An arrangement of the national anthem of Andorra for String Orchestra. ''El Gran Carlemany presents the nation’s history in a first-person narrative. The anthem was officially adopted on September 8, 1921, the anniversary date of the feast of Our Lady of Meritxell (the Virgin Mary), the patron saint of Andorra. Despite the anthem having been written just before the official change in Catalan orthography, the lyrics using the old orthography are still official in Andorra and in active use. If performed with strings only, just start with the pickup to measure two since there is no drum roll. To hear what the strings combined with the band arrangement sound like, go to YOUTUBE.https://youtu.be/gCFWjPQ7SRoI deleted the bass clar, all the saxes and baritone from the band score, and then added the string parts which created the full orchestra replication. All that is missing is the timpani.Let me know if you need a timp part. mman@embarqmail.com

An arrangement of the Vanuatu (Ni-Vanuatu)National Anthem Yumi, Yumi, Yumi- We, We, We for String Orchestra Vanuatu gained its independence from both the United Kingdom and France in 1980. (I assume that during the colonial period, both anthems were used, however I do not know how they were performed). Upon independence, the anthem Yumi, Yumi, Yumi, written in the native Bislama language (a type of Pigdin English/French hybrid), was chosen as the national anthem. 2 Minuets and Air

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.895610 Composed by Ignatius Sancho. Arranged by Kyle VanArsdalen. Classical,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 23 pages. Kyle VanArsdalen Music #6515983. Published by Kyle VanArsdalen Music (A0.895610). These 2 Minuets and Air come from a collection of music called Minuets, etc., etc. for the Violin, Mandolin, German-Flute and Harpsichord (1770) by the British abolitionist, writer, shopkeeper, and composer Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780). They are arranged so that they can be performed as a work for String Orchestra or String Quartet. This is possible because the Cello and Bass parts are doubled. The Violin 3 part is optional and can serve two purposes: (1) To add more instruments to the viola section, if your orchestra has a small number of violists, to balance the parts in the ensemble, and (2) to provide more options for performing these pieces as a String Quartet. Possibilities include:2 Violins, Viola, Cello;   2 Violins, Viola, Bass;   3 Violins, Cello;   3 Violins, BassThis kind of flexibility of ensemble, along with the fact that every part gets to play something interesting, makes this an ideal arrangement for educators.Additionally, the Air was originally written as a trio. The Viola and Violin 3 parts were written by me, so that it can be performed with the 2 Minuets. This means, if you wanted to play the Air as a trio, you can, and it provides another option for how one can utilize this arrangement for chamber music. This means the Air can be performed as a stand-alone movement for:2 Violins, Cello;   2 Violins, BassThis download includes the full score and all of the parts (Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 (treble viola), Viola, Cello, and Bass).
