This piece begins with a slow choral, with the brass beginning it and answered by the woodwinds. They come together to reiterate the choral. The percussion enters signaling the start of the festivities. The festival goes into full swing with the entire ensemble. After the playfulness of the festival melodies, the piece ends as it began with a return to the home choral. Approximately 3min. 30sec. *Second trombone can also be bass trombone.

Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery.Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme.Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination.Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

With tutti syncopation and lots of flourishes, the band will be able to express the joy of spring as fountains in the park start up again.Woodwinds—Only the clarinet part is split throughout. The alto sax has a couple of split measures to reinforce the trills but supports the horn line for the rest of the march. The tenor sax supports the horn part when the altos have the trills. The ranges are within most 1st-year players and easily within 2nd-year players range. The 2nd Clarinet never goes above the break. The trills for all woodwinds (fountains) are easy trills for younger players.Brass—Only the trumpet part is split and it is rhythmically unison throughout. Low brass/woodwinds are mostly entirely unison throughout the piece. Like the WW’s, all parts are playable by 1st-year players. Percussion uses a standard concert march instrumentation. The particular technique of treating the melodic cells will become a paradigm of his language, along with the use of innovative timbres, which were not common in the orchestral music of the time. The close collaboration with Sergio Leone during the 60s will contribute to consolidating him as a benchmark in the sound of the Western genre. After the success of the so-called Dollar Trilogy, Paramount Pictures asked Leone to repeat the formula before tackling other projects. This one, with a more generous budget, will start filming C'era una volta il West, an eclectic story in which all the characteristic elements of the genre are represented: the railroad, the gunslingers and bandits, the american pioneers, the woman of character indomitable and the enigmatic man in search of revenge. Leone again entrusted the soundtrack to Ennio Morricone, playing this one a fundamental role in the story. The present transcription incorporates the original sounds of the author, such as the harmonica, the electric and classical guitar, the harpsichord or the choir, in the ensemble of the concert band, seeking to achieve a greater sound fidelity with the score. Understanding the difficulty that having these resources can entail, the previous specific parts are of an optional nature, so that the arrangement also works without them, and also if any of the parts is incorporated independently of the rest.

The piece starts with a brief fanfare, followed immediately by a rousing melody in the style of an old sea-shanty. Images of sailing upon an endless sea of stars come to mind as a tranquil nocturne is presented, but the peace is shattered as cutlasses and sabers clash in a dogfight sure to end in Davy Jones’ locker! The music swells to a dramatic conclusion as our mighty galleon surges across a stormy sea. Instrumentation The Privateers comes with full sets of both concert/stage and marching/field parts, allowing for great flexibility in your performance venues. Contemporary marching bands and drum & bugle corps utilize specialized field percussion which is typically not used in a concert setting. With this piece, the use of outdoor percussion (quad toms and a tonal bass drum line) onstage is encouraged, although not required. A single bass drum line is included which may be used instead of (or in addition to) the tonal bass drum line, and the Quad Toms part may be omitted. A piano part is included, primarily for optional use indoors as a color instrument for the ensemble. However, smaller bands in particular may find it useful for filling out the accompaniment line if instrumentation is limited. Optionally, a very small ensemble of melodic instruments could be used, with the piano acting as a full-fledged accompaniment. Several optional parts are included, such as Eb and Bb Horn, for ensembles with limited instrumentation. Also, the two Low Winds parts should be distributed equally across trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tenor sax players. Double reed parts are not included. Double these instruments on appropriate parts to suit the needs of your ensemble. Teaching Points Meter – The alternation of 6/8 and 4/4 with a constant pulse (rather than a constant 8th note) provides an excellent opportunity to teach your students to shift the subdivision of the beat from triple to duple and back again. Chromaticism & Accidentals – There is a recurring passage which features the prominent use of secondary dominants, or circle of fifths chord motion. Students can learn a few less-than-common accidentals and enharmonics, while also getting a larger lesson in music theory.

Snowfall On Fields is a gentle piece, written to elicit the imagery of a beautiful, soft winter snow falling all around you as you walk through the countryside. The piece starts out with a light cascading motif that continues to gain strength as the snow builds from a flurry, to a steady snowfall, and then tapers off again and is gone. Care should be taken to approach the piece with attention to phrasing and stagger breathing where noted to allow for a constant, uninterrupeted sound. The dynamics build as the intensity of the snow does, and then fades away.

Clashing Destinies takes the listener through a spiral into insanity, starting with the constant thudding of the lows. Even as different parts add on, the thudding persists, representing one's inability to think clearly. There is a sharp dissonant line initially played by the glockenspiel that comes up time and time again, representing the internal panic that cuts through one's rational thoughts during their spiral into madness. Finally we hit the breaking point, a moment of silence followed by the screams of pain one experiences after reaching their breaking point. Soon after, a screaming trumpet takes the spotlight, any form of rational thought has now dithered away. Nothing is left but screams. After an intense battle of struggling to find a grasp on reality, there is a moment of calm. Things slow down as it is believed sanity is being regained, but still, there is that persistent thudding and sharp dissonance. Alas, the realization occurs, it is impossible to regain sanity. As the brass section overtakes the calm of the woodwinds, insanity fully takes over. The homestretch of this piece is pure chaos, every motif comes back. It is one huge reprise of all the feelings that have been experienced, except now they are all sounding much more rapidly, all just a small part of the chaos that is ensuing. Now there is nothing left to do except yell for help. There are three final screams, three final pleads for help. After screaming for help, it is realized... No one is there. Now there is nothing, left unresolved, all alone in the silence.

This composition is inspired by the symbology present in the suits of a deck of cards. It is in one continuous movement that is divided into four sections. Spades (death) is a funeral march that uses frequent dotted rhythms, outbursts of anger, and a lyrical, somber descending melody. A change of mood that is accomplished by brightening the harmony leads into Hearts (romance). This section follows a loose AABA form. The A sections contain lyrical lines and lush harmony. The B section is freer in rhythm and represents a dialogue between two lovers. The last measure of this section introduces a dotted rhythm motive that is used throughout the next section, Diamonds (riches). This section is subtitled riches instead of wealth because riches implies money for money’s sake rather than the benefits it can buy. It is in the style of a frenzied waltz as if those with the riches are at an elaborate ball totally unaware of the restlessness going on around them. Towards the end of this section, a chromatic line begins to insert itself, suggesting the uprising and war (Clubs) that follows. A dissonant chord transitions the listener into Clubs (war) section. This section begins powerfully with repeated chords resembling people shooting at each other. The shooting motif appears frequently throughout. Different melodic ideas represent the battle between forces. The tide of the battle keeps going back and forth, but nobody actually wins. The piece ends with the sound of death and destruction, therefore starting the cycle of the suits over again. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.
