Played up to tempo, this piece requires nimble finger-work as well as sensitivity to the relationship between the parts, hence its classification as 'advanced intermediate'.The Pizzicato Polka was written in 1869 by brothers Josef and Johann Strauss (Jr), originally for plucked strings and glockenspiel. The polka is a lively dance in 2/4 time which originated in Bohemia but spread rapidly throughout Europe and beyond. The name is believed to derive from pulka, the Bohemian term for half-step, which describes the rapid shifts in weight from one foot to another. For dancing, a polka should be played at a consistent tempo but concert performances of the Pizzicato Polka traditionally involve significant rubato. Here, the decision is largely left up to the performers.

In his lifetime, Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was dubbed ‘The Waltz King’, reflecting his prolific output of this type of dance music. He also composed polkas, quadrilles, marches, operettas and a ballet. During the 1848 upheavals in the Austrian Empire, Johann II opted to side with the revolutionaries. This allegiance had an adverse effect on his career, as well as deepening the rift between him and his father, so in due course Johann wrote several marches with titles that might encourage the establishment to forget his past pro-revolutionary sympathies. The Ottinger Reiter-Marsch was first published in 1850. Strauss claimed that the work had been commissioned for a regiment who specifically requested the dedication to General Franz von Ottinger. At the time, Ottinger was not very popular, largely because of his punitive attitude towards former revolutionaries.This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon is suitable for players of ABRSM Grade 4 - 5 standard and above.

Slavonic Dances Op 46, written in 1878, was something of a breakthrough work for Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, finally establishing his reputation well beyond his native land. The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances, rather than works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time. These Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, at his publisher’s request, Dvorak produced orchestrated versions shortly thereafter. The pieces proved so popular that Dvorak composed a second set, Op. 72, in 1886. Op. 46, No. 3 is in the form of the polka, a dance which originated in Bohemia. This arrangement, for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon, is best suited to players of advanced intermediate standard or above.

The Pizzicato Polka is a piece of orchestral music by Johann Baptist & Josef Strauss composed in 1869 for a trip to Imperial Russia. It was published in 1870.
