Ebb and Flow, in this version in G minor for handbell quartet, is a short work which evokes the subtly changing moods of the sea. It's more of a challenge to play than the 3 Octave version for handbell choir, but can be performed by any group of experienced ringers. No ringer need have more than one bell in each hand at any time. It is an effective piece of mood music which fits into any handbell programme. It is scored for 2 octaves of handbells (G4 - G6).

This fantasy for flute and piano is based on a Theme and Variation. However, unlike a traditional theme and variation, the theme used here, (which is based on a folk song The Cliffs of Old Tynemouth from the North East of England), is heard in it’s entirety at the very end of the piece. As each variation is heard more and more of the original melody is revealed and subsequently disguised until the final section of the music when the melody can be heard. The piece is rather like a musical metaphor for the eroding of the cliffs by the sea; as the constant ebb and flow of the sea (represented by the constant piano accompaniment) erodes the rock, the hidden secrets of the melody become more and more exposed until the melody is revealed.

Ruby and Steel (duration 7 min.) is a fantasy work for alto saxophone and piano, reflecting on the physical qualities and contrasts between an unlikely pairing of materials – nature's precious gemstone ruby and the manmade material steel. The ideas of the red glow of molten steel and the red light of ruby are held in common. Establishing a modern yet Romantic atmosphere, an extended piano solo opens the work. The music is developed through a thematic transformation process: gestures of earlier music reappears as transformations of its previous selves. The interaction (both musical dialogue and subsequent agreement) between piano and saxophone is a prominent characteristic, along with ebb-and-flow of tempo. As with several other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an abstract painting–Ruby and Steel–created by Hoover as a visual interpretation of the musicJeffrey Hoover's work– music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra –has received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience. Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Jeffrey Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. Here at last is my ’’Elegy sentimentale’’ for Concert Band, and an original composition.I hope it makes an excellent piece for amateur and professional bands alike; with some challenging and interesting woodwind and brass writing for all.I envisage the ’’Elegy’’ eventually making a good piece of film music, and in consequence any directors or producers looking for a movie theme; please feel free to contact me!Elegy Sentimenatle is a mournful & melancholic work, suited for performances on the concert platform.A Supreme Work of Art!The Elegy Sentimentale opens impressively. Keith Terrett plants a C deep in virgin soil; orchestrated brilliantly for bassoon, harp and delineated by pizzicato double basses this bass line is a tree of a forest; and we are at once held by the strength of the roots. The tonality is immediately clear, and there is a grand feeling of space and power in the wide layout of the score. A lone solo clarinet high in the tessitura accompanied by a solo cello with a counter subject state the opening eight bar theme which embodies the seeds of two ideas, which supplies the generating force for the slightly agitated Piu Mosso which follows. The counter subject given by the solo cello at the beginning is now reiterated by the plaintive voice of a solo oboe and a third motif makes an appearance in the solo clarinet; oboe and clarinet duet beautifully over arpeggiated rhythmic impulses in the harp. A new subject of an accompanying nature, derived from all the material thus far presented now comes off at a tangent on the strings cascading downwards and accompanying woodwind who, play the chief melodic subject while horns cry in anguish. This first section is then repeated; I found the whole experience spiritual, detached and wondering, intensified by the breath-taking stillness. Mr Terrett in the middle section that follows now uses his full orchestral forces; after a key change the emotional charge that follows is cataclysmic in its cry of anguish; the main theme is stated in a full dress orchestral tutti, which is then repeated. The music ebbs and flows with slight variations in the woodwind recalling the main ideas; at the very end high strings bring consolation and finally peace. Keith Terrett shows an admirable command of orchestration and melodic construction and combines these qualities with rare imagination and insight.Gerald Manning

Jogo de Cartas is Portuguese for “card game.†I opted for the Portuguese to honor my patron for this piece, tenor saxophonist Philippe Trovão of Lisbon.In this work, I celebrate four favorite card games.War is a relatively simple game in which each player is dealt half of the deck. The players play one card and the player with the larger card value wins the “battle.†If both players play an identical value, a “war†is started. There are variations on the game at this point, but in one popular version, each player places three cards face down then play another card face up—whichever player has the highest card takes all the cards. The object is to win all of the cards in the deck. In this musical setting, the sax and piano are each a “player,†and each plays cards (translated into rhythmic values) with the conflict and victory painted in dynamic, sometimes dissonant vitality.In Solitaire, the sax plays alone as one plays this game alone. And, just as in the game, each phrase (or suit-based pile) becomes longer, more complex, and ends in an excited flurry of activity as “victory “ is achieved!The third movement, Blackjack, illustrates the deceptively-simple game of chance, with gradually ebbing and flowing tension until, in this case, the (sax) player takes the hand. The number 21 features prominently in the construction principles of the movement as a hand totaling 21 is considered the best in the game.The finale is a wild ride portraying a newer card game called Egyptian Rat Screw. In this colorful and fast-paced game, players flip one card up in turn, continuing to do so until one player puts down a face card. The next player then has several chances (based on the specific face card played) to match or beat that card. In a interesting quirk, if two players play cards of equal rank, the player who “slaps†the card pile first wins all of the cards in the pile. This unique game was fertile ground for musical interplay, illustrating both the back-and-forth and the more aggressive aspects of play!

Living near the ocean has inspired me to include a great deal of ocean imagery in this composition. Rolling rhythms in 6/8 meter are reminiscent of the flowing movements of the sea. Shimmering sun on water is suggested by high-pitched woodwind figures. The ebb and flow of the sea is brought to mind by rising and falling musical phrase. The second section is a playful dance written in 7/8 meter. All the instruments get a chance to play the uplifting melody.

A note from the composer: I wrote Farewell Dream Garden for the International Music in the Garden Composers’ Competition Wroclaw - Kraków 2010/2011. The competition was sponsored by the Botanical Gardens of Wroclaw to commemorate the 200th anniversary of their founding. The guidelines of the competition suggested a musical portrayal of times of day in the garden and I chose to depict nighttime, or more specifically, dreaming. My idea of a night garden is deeply lyrical, emotional, and colorful. Broadly arching phrases of the soprano vocalise, ebbs and flows of the string orchestra, and intricate flute textures all compound to make Farewell one of my most romantic and spectacular compositions to date. The composition won the second prize in the competition. This lyrical piece is a delightful way to introduce your young band to ballad style. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

How a Rose E'er Blooming, which would fit well into either a contemplative moment of worship or an intimate moment of a concert. The gentle treatment lends itself to both the Advent and Christmas seasons.Beginning with an ebb and flow of both dynamics and tempo, this arrangement comes back to a flowing eighth note motif between verses and at its conclusion. The first verse features a baroque-style treatment as it plays with the third line of the melody before returning to the first style in its conclusion. The second verse is carried by a staccato accompaniment as the melody moves ahead in 3/4.The PDF file is formatted to be printed double-sided.
