You may be familiar with this Bob Dylan song, or perhaps the popular Joan Baez cover; it was Baez's version that I first heard, and I was immediately struck by the juxtaposition of the sweetly lilting vocal line (and gently strumming guitar accompaniment) with the apocalyptic text. The words, while strange and surreal, seemed to perfectly depict the sense of unrest and violence that fills our world today. The intimacy of the repeated farewells to a loved one while the world literally falls apart feels especially poignant; the almost absurd contrast between lines like I'll see you in a while and the sky is falling reminds me of the feeling of wanting to draw inward and deny the frightening things happening around us while also being unable to ignore them. I began imagining what the music would sound like if it reflected the sense of chaos and destruction of Dylan's poetry, and commissioned Melissa Dunphy to compose such an arrangement for voice and viola.

Beginning slowly with singing bells, flowing eighth notes and handchimes, the listener can imagine the shepherds’ awe and amazement at the angels’ beautiful song proclaiming the Christ child’s birth. They hurry across the plain to find the child, depicted by malleted and thumb-damped bells in a spirited, rhythmic section in 7/8 time. With an LV eighth note accompaniment under a chordal treble melody sprinkled with a few 16th notes, the final stanza is majestic and full as the shepherds find the holy family and worship their newborn king.

In biblical literature, Archangel Uriel is a divine messenger from God, bringing knowledge to the people while serving as a protector of truth. Uriel's providence is set in light, truth, and wisdom. Uriel is a patron of poetry, associated with repentance, and is one of the archangels who stand in the presence of God. In some traditions, Uriel stands at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, with a fiery sword, preventing Man's return to that paradise on Earth. Uriel is the angel who came to Earth and warned Noah of the Great Flood to come. Uriel also spoke to the biblical prophet Ezra on behalf of God, teaching and answering a series of questions Ezra posed to God. Uriel is associated with several literary and artistic works, notably depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting The Virgin on the Rocks. In this painting, Uriel is shown along with Mary (the mother of Jesus), with Jesus and John the Baptist presented as young toddlers. The composition Uriel makes use of two modal scales to create melodic and harmonic tension and resolution: an altered E Phrygian scale (with a lowered 6th step of the scale) and an altered C Lydian (with a lowered 6th and 7th scale step). The Phrygian scale brings a dark minor quality to the sound, in contrast to the Lydian scale's major yet veiled quality. Set in an unfolding three-part form, the music invokes a blurred and sometimes mystical atmosphere for the listener. Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music for soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience. Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing. Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments.

This is a song for our time. I was inspired by a painting called Angel of a Brighter Day. It depicted an angel with outspread wings just outside a window on a sunny day. He seemed to be saying Come out of the gloom and into the Light. Just what we need right now. When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.
