German • Danish.Iwan Müller, clarinettist, composer and reformer of the clarinet, was born to German parents in Reval (Russia). One of his first jobs was in St. Petersburg. In 1809 he went to Paris where he worked as an instrument maker, amongst other things. In 1812 he presented his new clarinet with 13 round keys, the ‘clarinette omnitonique‘, which could be played in all keys, to a panel. Although the initial evaluation was negative, the innovation was implemented in the coming years. In 1820 Müller returned to Russia and then to Germany (Kassel, Berlin). He performed concerts in various countries and finally became a court musician in Bückeburg. Iwan Müller’s skill as a composer is revealed in both the melody and harmony of Le rêve (The Dream). The piece was published in 1845 (plate number 7855).

L'idée un peu spéciale derrière cette musique, c'est que le violon est joué uniquement en pizzicato, ce qui veut dire que les cordes sont pincées au lieu d'être frottées avec l'archet. C'est un peu différent de ce qu'on entend habituellement, mais j'aime bien cette sonorité légère et délicate.L'ambiance de cette pièce est un peu étrange, entre le rêve et la réalité, comme si on était transporté dans un monde imaginaire. J'ai essayé de créer une atmosphère un peu magique et mystérieuse, inspirée par l'univers des elfes.

Owing to their intended audience, all of these canons are at the unison/octave. Three of them (2, 3, and 5) are two-part echo-canons, where the imitative voices begins very soon after the first one (two beats later in each case here). The other two canons, based on pre-existing texts, adopt the more common structure of following a chord progression that proceeds over several measures (albeit an irregular, 7-measure, elided phrase in Le Rêve).

The underlying concept is that of dreaming.The first section, Dreaming, which is static and meditative in character, is further divided into several parts, which, looking at the processes of dream narrative, present, in addition to the initial theme, short melodies of lyrical/melancholic character, ready to interrupt before reaching a possible development, to leave room for further suggestions.The short themes are repeated several times, including in the final section, which is a reprise, condensed and varied from the first.By contrast, the middle section, Nightmaring, has a strongly contrasting character to the preceding one, rhythmically marked and searchingly percussive, sardonic in the variety of figurations employed in the different registers of the instrument.A technically intricate section that demands of the performer the choice of appropriate solutions, and closes with a frenetic accumulation of fragments. The most perturbing part of the dream.Le concept sous-jacent est celui du rêve.La première section, Dreaming, qui est statique et méditative par nature, est subdivisée en plusieurs parties qui, en examinant les processus narratifs du rêve, présentent, en plus du thème initial, de courtes mélodies d’un caractère lyrique/mélancolique, prêtes à s’interrompre avant d’atteindre un développement possible, pour laisser place à de nouvelles suggestions.Les courts thèmes sont répétés plusieurs fois, y compris dans la section finale, qui est une reprise, condensée et variée par rapport à la première.En revanche, la section centrale, Nightmaring, contraste fortement avec la précédente, marquée rythmiquement et percussive dans sa recherche, sarcastique dans la variété des figurations employées dans les différents registres de l’instrument.Une section techniquement complexe qui demande au musicien de choisir des solutions appropriées, et qui se termine par une accumulation frénétique de fragments. La partie la plus troublante du rêve.

The work is written in five movements and is based on a series of poetic images.The first movement, Remembering the Sounding Bells..., uses bell-like sonorities and tonal fragments whichare developed between the four instruments of the quartet The second movement Interrupted Ricacares beginswith a compact, accelerating atonal motif which alternates with contrapuntal passages which evoke motet and ricacare forms.En Croisant le Diable Boîteux (Upon meeting the limping Devil) takes its inspiration from the novel by Lesage. This movement is a lively bi-tonal scherzo in classical ABA form which exploits off-the-string bowings and doublestops. The fourth movement, ...L'inflexion des voix chères qui se sont tues (the sounding of dear voices which have been silence) is a line from Paul Verlaine’s : Mon rêve familier (Poèmes saturniens/ melancholia VI 1866). A slowly unfolding dirge-like theme is passed through the four instruments in an expressive lament. The final movement, Appels et invocations, is inspired by a strophe in Charles Baudelaire’s le Serpent qui Danse in Les Fleurs du Mal which speaks of preparing for a voyage, real orimagined, which is expressed here in the angular, robust theme in unison which opens the work.

Freely inspired by the poem of the same name by Charles Baudelaire, this quartet in three movements is derived essentially from the slow motif which begins the works, which generates most of the musical material which follows. The style is more linear than harmonic. The four-part invention which opens the work is followed by the second section (played without interruption) which is a kind of long suspended melody. The third movement is a quick scherzo with a final evocation of the opening motif before a brief coda. This fourth booklet is dedicated to ensemble playing through five trios and three quartets of various styles (tango, ballad, rock, etc.) appropriate for the end of primary school with a few years of experience and the beginning of secondary school. Some pieces are written in a homorhythmic manner and can constitute an introduction to ensemble music, while others are rather polyrhythmic. They can constitute a first contact with the following techniques and effects: staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, natural harmonic, percussion or crossed strings. This volume is therefore intended for guitarists who already know the notes in first position. Two pieces include a more advanced part with an introduction to playing in 5th position. These are short pieces that do not present technical challenges other than those allowing you to achieve the effects and play expressively.You will find in the scores indications of nuances, timbre, attack and fingerings which constitute suggestions for work and not prescriptions. Teachers and students are therefore invited to make interpretation choices different from those proposed or to try to convincingly render those already written.The pieces were composed or arranged by UQAM music education students as part of a course aimed at equipping musicians for teaching guitar in the school system. Many of them are musicians from different backgrounds (composition, performance, world music, etc.), which explains the creativity found in the pieces. All the pieces have been the subject of an audio recording available on the Productions d’Oz website and on YouTube. Search for À vos guitares, prêt, joue! Certaines pièces sont écrites de manière homorythmique et peuvent constituer une initiation à la musique d’ensemble, alors que d’autres sont plutôt polyrythmiques. Elles peuvent constituer un premier contact avec les techniques et effets suivants : staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, harmonique naturelle, percussion ou cordes croisées. Ce volume s’adresse donc aux guitaristes qui connaissent déjà les notes en première position. Deux pièces comportent une partie plus avancée avec une initiation au jeu en Ve position. Vous trouverez dans les partitions des indications de nuances, de timbre, d’attaque et de doigtés qui constituent des suggestions de travail et non des prescriptions. Ainsi, les enseignants et les élèves sont invités à faire des choix d’interprétation différents de ceux qui sont proposés ou à tenter de rendre de manière convaincante ceux déjà écrits.Les pièces ont été composées ou arrangées par des étudiants en enseignement de la musique de l’UQAM dans le cadre d’un cours qui vise à outiller les musiciens pour l’enseignement de la guitare dans le système scolaire. ISBN 9782898522048.Antônio Francisco Braga (1868-1945) belongs to the generation of Brazilian composers of the first republican period, aesthetically tied to romanticism, alongside Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902), Glauco Velásquez (1884-1914), and Barrozo Neto (1881-1941). Born in Rio de Janeiro, on April 15th, 1868, he began his musical studies at the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, in 1876. In 1883, he enrolled at the Imperial Conservatório de Música where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Carlos de Mesquita – a former student of César Franck, Durand, and Massenet – and clarinet with Antônio Luís de Moura. Braga's first compositions date from this period: Sonho de Dante (1885), Dolce far niente (1886), the first Valse Romantique for piano (1886), among others.In 1887, he premiered his first symphonic work, Fantasia-Abertura. In 1890, being one of the finalists in a competition to choose the new Brazilian national anthem, Braga was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, where he took classes with Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory. During this period, he wrote some of his most important symphonic works, Paysage, Cauchemar, Episódio Sinfônico, and Marabá (which was performed by Richard Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1920, in Brazil). His opera Jupyra is considered one of the greatest Brazilian compositions of that genre.Back in Brazil, he was appointed professor of counterpoint, fugue, and composition at the Instituto Nacional de Música, in 1902. There, some of the finest Brazilian composers studied with him, like Glauco Velásquez and Lorenzo Fernândez.Braga wrote operas, symphonic works, songs, sacred music, two Masses, music for piano, different chamber formations, band, and choir. He is the author of many patriotic hymns, the most popular of which is Hino à Bandeira (with lyrics by Olavo Bilac). He explored Brazilian nationalist elements in some of his works, as in Variações sobre um Tema Brasileiro and in the Trio for violin, cello and piano, whose third movement is based on a lundu (a musical genre and dance of Afro-Brazilian origin).In addition to being a composer, Braga was one of the most active conductors of his time, having been ahead of three orchestras in Rio de Janeiro: Instituto Nacional de Música, Sociedade de Concertos Sinfônicos, and Theatro Municipal. Braga conducted the Brazilian premiere of major symphonic works such as La Mer (Debussy), Pacific 231 (Honegger) besides other numerous Brazilian compositions.In 1938, he retired from Instituto Nacional de Música. He passed away on March 14th, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro.Unfortunately, Francisco Braga never wrote for the guitar. However, over a century ago his music had already been incorporated to its repertoire. According to information found in newspapers of the time, Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo included transcriptions of pieces by Braga in her programs when she performed in Brazil: Gavota e Minuete (from the melodrama Contratador de Diamantes), in 1919, in São Paulo, and the waltz-caprice Corrupio, in 1921, in Rio de Janeiro.The piano score of Madrigal Pavane was dedicated to Alexina Leitão and published by Casa Vieira Machado, in 1901. According to the composer’s catalogue, there are two other versions of this piece: strings orchestra (1901) and quartet (which is still in manuscript). It is pure, but colorfully nuanced; it speaks to the heart as well as the mind: at times calm; at times witty; wise, yet sensual. The music of Jacques Leguerney is un jardin à la française, both elegant and stylish.â? Jacques Leguerney was born in Le Havre on 19 November 1906. His uncle bought his first piano and encouraged him to study and write music. He wrote chamber works, and took a few semesters of harmony with Nadia Boulanger, who arranged for a performance of his Epitaphe guerrière and Clair de lune in a concert organized by the Société musical indépendante at the Salle Pleyel. However, he decided not to continue his studies. He felt that his gift was natural and spontaneous, and that anyone who understood music should not have to do exercises to learn to compose. In 1928, Jane Bathori took an interest in Leguerney, including two songs during her tour in Argentina, and the following year at the Salle Erard in Paris. In 1932, when his father died, Leguerney took over the family business and stopped composing until the outbreak of World War II. The period extending from the German occupation of France to the end of the 1940s constitutes one of the important periods of Leguerneyâ??s musical life. He began his extended song cycle, Poèmes de la Pléiade, and wrote many songs upon poems of Paul-Jean Toulet. He also continued to compose chamber music, including the Sonatine pour violon et piano, the â??Fantasie pour pianoâ? and the Quatuor à cordes en Ré. An important year for Leguerney was 1943. He met musical colleagues who would become his major interpreters. These included Gérard Souzay as well as his half-sister, soprano Geneviève Touraine; pianist Jacqueline Robin (Bonneau), Pierre Bernac, and Francis Poulenc. Robin (Bonneau) particularly influenced Leguerneyâ??s style. His piano accompaniments were created specifically for her virtuosic and sensitive style of pianism. Bernac observed that Leguerney wrote melodies de pianiste. In 1946, Leguerney created a ballet on the mythological story of Endymion. The premiere was at the Opéra de Paris on 27 July 1949, with choreography by Serge Lifar. The Opéra de Paris immediately commissioned a second work, which was La Vénus noire, based upon a short story by Prosper Mérimée. This ballet was never produced, due to disagreements with the choreographer. Leguerney became discouraged and this situation was to lead to the end of his interest in composing. However, the years 1950-1954 brought Leguerney widespread recognition as he created his beautiful mélodie cycles including La Nuit, La Solitude (for piano as well as an orchestration), Le Paysage, and Le Carnaval, as well as the cantata Psaume LXII de David.
