Melancholica I is a neoclassical piano piece in a series, part of a larger art project whereas this is the first track in a large piano suite that tells the story of living with melancholy. The project is meant to give some focus on the issue that people who suffer from depression and melancholy should be able to be open with it. And that we all should consider how to confront a person with depression -it could happen to anyone. The music is suitable for grand piano lists and wherever piano music fits - either listening that captures the beholder or just sounds beautiful in the background on a fine dining.First part of my suite Melancholica, each one will depict an aspect of melancholy with grand piano music; the thin veil that appears to be between the conscious mind and the subconsciousness.Note: The piece is available in two versions; a short one and a concerto one. Though “The Veil Between†starts slow and ominous, it quickly picks up the tempo with a driving bass line and melody that pushes throughout the piece. The middle section is filled with creepy percussion instruments, including bowed cymbals and super ball mallets on gongs and timpani. Your percussionists are sure to enjoy trying out these cool sounds.Every person on a melodic instrument gets the melody at some point in the piece. I just liked the idea of someone starting to play the melody as people were getting ready for rehearsal and anyone else being able to join in! Plus, I thought it might make it easier to teach the style of the melody if you could do it as a full group.This piece was originally written for 5 percussionists. After finishing the piece I was asked to add in more percussion, a task which I was very excited to do! While all eight of these Celtic holidays may not be truly ancient, several of them certainly are; some, like Samhain, have had Christianizing veils cast over them but have kept many of the pre-Christian customs associated with their celebration. Interested harpists will find a wealth of available information about these holidays, their names, and their customs. Imbolc, February 1st or 2nd, is also the Feast of St. Bridget or Brigid and is associated with the ancient goddess of that name in Celtic mythology.Ostara is the name sometimes given to the neo-Celtic celebration of the Spring Equinox. This piece depicts the dawn of the day and of the year. Beltaine, the joyous celebration of spring’s warmth and wealth of flowers and new greenery, occurs on the first day of May. The longest day of the year and the shortest night mark the Summer Solstice-Midsummer. Since long before Shakespeare’s funny and lyrical play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Summer Solstice has been associated with magic.Lughnasadh, on August 1st, is the festival of the first harvest. A version of the name of this festival survives in Manx and Scots Gaelic as well as in Irish Gaelic, and the name itself derives from Lugh, one of the most important Celtic godsMabon marks the Autumn Equinox and the end of summer; for me, it is a wistful moment of the year-extremely beautiful yet transitory. Samhain is one of the most significant celebrations in the Celtic year- the word itself means the end of summer, the beginning of the dark part of the year. It survives even in non-Celtic countries as Halloween, thanks to its adoption into the Christian calendar as All Hallows’ Eve. It is said to be the time when the veils between this world and the next are at their most thin.The Winter Solstice is marked in many European cultures as a time for celebrating the birth of the new light and a time for decorating with evergreens like holly. For The Holly King, modal and traditional versions of the carol The Holly and the Ivy, were used because of the lyrics’ references to the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer.

How Beauteous Are Their Feet falls under the classification of fuging tune--a popular idiom in colonial New England in the late 18th century and used frequently by many early American composers including William Billings. Fuging tunes typically begin with all voices together in a homophonic hymn-like statement, followed by a section where each voice enters one after the other in an imitative manner similar to a fugue. Another striking characteristic of this genre is the use of open fifths, as well as the nontraditional use of parallel fifths. These features, in addition to the contrast between homophony and polyphony, give this style of music its unique flavor.

Crystal Veil Suite was composed in 2018 for REVEL, an Austin, Texas based classical music group led by Dr. Carla McElhaney, and for Chorus Austin, also of Austin, Texas, Ryan Heller, Artistic Director. The premiere of the piece took place on December 1, 2018, at the Existential Solstice concert, part of REVEL's Radio Project concert series. The Existential Solstice concert, a collaboration between REVEL and Chorus Austin, featured music and poetry meant to elicit vivid imagery of winter scenes. As a lifelong Texan, this required a stretching of my creativity, as you well might imagine. The A section of the first movement, The Snow, was written in Phyrigian mode to evoke the melancholy mood that may accompany a long winter, with descending patterns in the viola and the right hand of the piano painting a gentle snowfall. The B section contrasts with a faster tempo, suggesting an intensification of the snowfall, before returning to the melancholic A section. The second movement, Frost and Wind, paints a snowstorm with its faster tempo, swirling winds in the right hand of the piano and in the choir, and bitter frost evinced in all voices. Finally, in the third movement, Snow, a shift to the major mode and tranquil melodic lines suggests a return to a gentle snowfall following the storm, with contemplative motives in all voices, until a lone robin's voice and sunlight bring us hope of spring's return.

However, the space is not completely empty, between, the vacuum consists of electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields and dust and cosmic rays. Within this space, planets and moon freely orbits in their path. An unseen force is behind the organized path and movement of these planets in the galaxy. This movement uses different aspects of palindrome concept to depict the organised space in music. First, the time signature expands and contracts in palindromic fashion, indicating an orderly manner in which the music orbits. Next, the intervals expands exponentially and also contracts in retrograde fashion. Analysis This movement uses palindrome concept for compositional technique. Rhythmically, it is palindromic in nature. The note values starts from a minim to dotted crotchet, crotchet, quaver, semiquavers. The time signature also expands and contract palandromically, starting from 2/4, 3/4 , 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 5/4, 4/4, 3/4, 2/4. The intervallic relationships are also in palindrome. Ascending from middle C the interval starts with Minor 2nd and expands exponentially to Major 2nd, Minor 3rd , Major 3rd, Perfect 4th , Augmented 4th , Perfect 5th to the tonic. Conversely, the intervals descend in similar fashion. French Horn begins with Low G (Concert C) and builds up this set of intervals reaching high B (Concert E). This melody is repeated by the Clarinet at the start of the new time signature of 3/ 4. Oboe enters at the next time signature of 4 /4. Flute at time signature of 5/4 and Bassoon at time signature of 6/4. The retrograde inversion of this motif is announced by the French Horn, this time starting on its high G (Concert C). Behind all this build up, the intervallic motif as shown above is played. At section A, this motif is announced without the rhythmic palindrome. The motif and its inversion builds up to a climax and re-asserts its presence with all the instruments playing at Bar before rehearsal mark B. The piece ends with the French horn performing the same motif at the beginning of this movement. Second Movement - Celestial Bodies Synopsis Celestial bodies or Astronomical objects refers to a single cohesive structure that is bound together usually by gravity or electromagnetism. Some examples includes asteroids, moons, planets and the stars. These objects or bodies may range from a single planet to star clusters, nebulae or entire galaxies and they have their position in space. This movement uses whole tone scale. The whole tone scale is used in this movement as it does not create sharp dissonances and the space between each interval is equal whichever way you stack the notes. The main melody, 8 bars long is repeated in canonic fashion. A countermelody is announced and also repeated by the ensemble in canonic fashion. Thereafter, both melodies will merge and this movement ends with a chord consisting of the whole tone scale starting on B. The music gradually unveils the each axis of the motion in which the astronomi.

A great piece to show off the talents of mature flute and lever harp performers, this colorful character piece is appropriate for any recital or concert setting. Mannanà n mac Lir occupied several roles in the mythological universe of the Celtic peoples. Most notably, he was considered to be the god of the seas. He was also regarded as a psychopomp-that is, a figure associated with the realm of the dead, acting as a sort of veil between the worlds. In this work, I play on his connection to the sea by quoting the traditional Manx folk tune The Storm Is Up (Callin Veg Dhoan). The tune is developed through several permutations, each portraying a role Mannanà n played. Each movement is ushered to us by a psychopomp veil. With the Churl in the Drab Coat refers to Mannanà n’s association with the trickster figure Bodach an Chota Lachtna. The movement is erratic yet impishly playful. Mannanà n was also regarded as a sort of magician king. In that respect, he was given the role of Guardian of Mag Mell, a place that is comparable to the Nordic conception of Valhalla. Mag Mell was a plain of joy, a kingdom under the sea for a select few. Mannanà n protected this realm with the help of Fragarach, a sword which could slice through any armor and could compel anyone to tell the truth. This movement is bold and heavy in spirit, gradually becoming more dissonant as if portraying an ugly battle to defend this beautiful place. The final veil transports us to the end of times, a fading away of the once-great pantheon. That storm, as all must do, comes to a quiet, peaceful end.
