Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862594). 2015 Piano Contest The tritonic scale has been in use since the days of Chopin, who used it in several of his etudes. Beethoven also used it in his final sonata Arietta movement. It consists of the root, a 4th up, and the 5th from the root as well, making it feel like a note, the next note up a 4th, followed by another whole-step up, and then the root again. It is such a versatile structure because not only can it stand on its own, but has lots of combinatorial possibilities with other tritonic scales, simultaneously. This piece explores some of those combinations. It also adds an element of contrary motion, in that, as the right-hand scale rises, the left-hand scale descends, in terms of the starting pitches. This makes for the colour shifts that are the piece's namesake and hallmark. So, after a brief octave introduction, the tritonics take off, and show their colours in combination. It is the only structure present in the piece. Thus the dynamics and accents give the piece additional contrasts in mood and flavor. An Intermediate piece, since the one structure can be easily mastered. Pedaling throughout, except for staccato passages. Can work at various tempi. MP3 MIDI audio. MBB.

Etude 3.0, the last of the single-interval material. tritones are rather easier to mirror, and otherwise make symmetrical than other intervals. Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. Two-interval pieces are next in line. MBB.

Darius Milhaud was NOT a member of the insider's group of Old Guard French composers, epitomized by Debussy and Ravel. Ravel had usupred Debussy's place as the pre-eminent modernist, and he rightly understood it was the duty of the next generation to rebel against his own work, and find their own ways and voices. Hence, Les Six was formed to accomplish this, just as Ravel's Les Apaches, ( not a Native American meaning, but a general reference to being musical warriors) had, by turns, admired, undermined, and then surpassed Debussy. The music here uses Milhaud's best-known contribution to modernity, bi-tonality. It takes the form of arpeggiated augmented major 7th chords played against each other: as the relationship between the chords comes to the tritone, each iteration slows down, but only to De-Emphasize the stark contrast, rather than bring it out. A second section uses mirrored, symmetrical patterns in each hand. The finale concludes with plain triads juxtaposed in a bi-tonal fashion, with the same contrary motion towards the tritone using a ritard and diminuendo. Approx. running time is 4 mins 30 secs. Easy to play, easy to read, not as easy to hear! Pedaling is fully indicated throughout. Debussy never used bi-tonality, and Ravel hinted at it a few times, but it was Milhaud's stock-in-trade. When using the intervals of a 4th and a tritone as material for a non-jazz piece, one has to be careful not to make the music sound like jazz, as this particular interval set comprises the essential dominant chord voicing for most jazz pianists. G-C#-F#, for instance, as a representation of A13 or A7. So, this piece uses complete symmetry, mirroring and topographically equivalent fingerings throughout, so as to avoid this problem. Admittedly, the spellings are not easy to decipher. They often use the flatted form of a note in one clef, and the sharped form of that same musical alphabet letter in the other. This is to avoid endless naturals, as the half-step motion, so typical of movement between 4ths and tritones, necessitates. Arpeggiated figures, block chords, and even some delicious chimes at the close make this piece more than a mere display of intervallic and pianistic options. It has a feeling all its own, as the sequential chromatic meandering up from the lower end of the keyboard to the upper shows each color in turn, all the while keeping to the strict rules that these etudes were constructed under.This is the last of the groups of two interval pieces. Running time is just under 3 mins. MBB.

Nothing here but us minor thirds and tritones. No variations, no displacements, no wild rhythms, just lay'em out. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I hope!, at what simple charm this piece exudes. Eventually, the tritones disappear as dissonances, when they are paired with the 3rds that constantly resolve each one, one right after another. hand crossing throughout. Mirroring is at a minimum here, since the hands are constantly working together. Running time is approx. 1 min 45 secs. MBB.

What set of piano etudes would be complete without a selection for the Left Hand alone! This one uses half-steps and tritones, not the usual component parts of a tuneful melody. Yet, the left-hand 5th finger or thumb plays an almost child-like tune, on mostly white keys, while the half-steps and tritones swirl about, above or below the melody. The song is in C major, and shifts to A minor, then back to C major. The embellishments are utterly chromatic, and essentially pre-determined by the intervals used. A short piece, running time is less than a minute. Pedal or not, as you see fit. And, Bring out the Melody, of course! MBB.

The flurries and the columns. The fragment of the poem (by Javier Adúriz) that heads this work underlines the impossibility – and the wish – of opposing the ephemeral, of contradicting transience. Technically, this musical work is based on a harmonic field of semitone + minor third + whole tone, which actually includes all intervals from semitone to tritone. I call this harmonic field 'modo Verdi' in my notes, because he uses it (as scala enigmatica) in his Quattro Pezzi Sacri. Although it is conceived for toy piano, I do not object to this work being played on other keyboard instruments, nor to its being adapted for various instrumental duets. Evaporación detenida (Stopped evaporation or Evaporation at standstill) was composed in Bremen on October 30, 2021 in the framework of an invitation by the US-American keyboardist David Bohn (a native of Wisconsin), to whom it is dedicated. He is active primarily in Bremen (Germany), where he teaches at the Hochschule für Künste and at the University. The combination of a 4th and a wholestep makes a structure known as the tritonic scale. Simply a three-tone scale, nothing more to it than that! highly pianistic, very mirror-able, and able to display sudden and dramatic shifts in harmonic colors while keeping a steady cascade of notes in motion. Octaves in the left hand make both a bassline and a melody underneath these arpeggiated scalar figures. The piece is in 12/8 time, as is often used for these three-notes up-three notes down, and back again kind of elements. The mirroring here is less topographical than the other pieces, but the contrary motion and mirrored fingerings persist, as does the strict use of the intervals at hand. Approx running time is 3 mins 15 secs. A Fun piece for the display of the sound of the piano, and the display of the ability of the player to maintain a flowing 1/8-note triplet motion through many different shades of major and minor, lydian and phrygian . I wrote it at the close of a chapter of my life that was wonderful in many ways, but bittersweet because I lost some people dear to me during that period of time. The piece uses a lot of parallel 0-6-11 chords (tritone with a perfect fourth stacked on top of it) in the left hand, but I think it still works quite well in conveying the feeling I had when I was writing it, which, I imagine, is something that many people can relate to. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.1335536). Hommage to Ursula is a piano piece in memory of Ursula Görsch (1932-2023). The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Both Pitch Class Sets are identical from an intervallic perspective - transposed by a tritone. Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting). A major third and a tritone together create a quintessentially modern-sounding cluster. And so, this unit is used in its unadulterated state throughout. The rhythm is divided into groups of three, deliberately set within a 4/4 time signature, so as to create an effect of hemiola and of syncopation that would not be evident were it set in a triple meter. The clusters play as solid blocks, then divide into two parts, then three. Then the note-values are made twice as small, and the music really takes off ! This is by FAR the most typically modern of all the etudes in the set, as far as rhythmic complexity, percussiveness, and a lack of traditional melody. Running time is just over 2 mins. MBB.
