This version is arranged as a duet in a Gospel style for one Clarinet and one Violin. After flooding had damaged the church organ in Oberdorf, Austria, Mohr asked local schoolmaster, Gruber, to write a Christmas melody to be accompanied by guitar. Silent Night was the result. The carol remained unpublished until 1833, but has since gained huge international popularity. Bing Crosby’s version sold more than 10 million copies and UNESCO has declared the carol an intangible cultural heritageWith a performance time of around two and a half minutes, this version of Silent Night is perfect for seasonal celebrations and concert performances, both formal and informal. The Huapango is a traditional Mexican style of music and dance, often mixing triple and duple metres. It is played on violin, accordion, and local 5-string variants of the guitar such as the vihuela, huapanguera and jarana. The Huapango rhythm famously inspired the song America in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The mixed metres, alternating between 6/8 and 3/4, will present a rhythmic challenge, while following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the dance style of the Huapango.
