Published by JB Linear (A0.582168). Amy Marcy Beach (1867 - 1944) was a pioneering woman composer at a time when women were barely considered by music publishers. She has been acclaimed to be the first important American woman composer. As a child Amy was allowed rather than encouraged to further her obvious musical talent. She wrote in a mature and virtuosic style for piano with use of chromaticism, fine melodic lines, and Impressionistic styles. This is her Fire-Flies set for clarinet quartet by John Gibson. (3 Bb clarinets and bass clarinet). This piece is also a part of a group of pieces called Buggy Delights also available on Sheet Music Press.

As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

He wrote his setting of Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), derived from Goethe's Faust, when he was 17 years old. Originally for voice and piano, Gretchen provides a first-person account of the feelings of its titular character as she works at her spinning wheel while reflecting on her conflicted emotions regarding Faust. The constant motion in the accompaniment part, echoing the tireless spinning of the wheel and the regular fall of her foot on the pedal, churns over a swiftly changing series of harmonies, representing both how swept away she is by her feelings for Faust but also her pain of not being able to be with him. The wheel's only pause comes when Gretchen reflects on Faust's kiss; it is the only moment in the song where she completely forgets her task at hand, so wrapped up is she in her tumultuous thoughts. As the musical patterns of the spinning wheel slowly but insistently return, Gretchen's composure is regained, and she returns to her task. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the spinning wheel pattern across all four parts, and Gretchen's lyrical melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.

His Die Forelle (The Trout), based on a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, tells the story of a clever and happy fish that is eventually caught by a duplicitous fisherman who muddies the water in order to trick the fish into being snared on his line. Schubert's playful accompanimental figures, originally set in the piano part, have long been interpreted as either the babbling of the brook or the gleeful swimming and leaping of the fish, and the sung melody has the natural strophic cadence of a folk song. It is only in the moment where the fisherman agitates the water and our protagonist fish is nearing his doom that we hear the harmony become darker and more complex; otherwise the material is bright, sunny, and full of playful chromaticism. This transcription for four clarinets employs a fluid exchange of the accompanimental motive across all four parts, and the original sung melody is also passed throughout the ensemble, allowing each player to have moments of both technical challenge and lyrical expressiveness.

Linus and Lucy is a popular jazz pianocomposition written by Vince Guaraldi, appearing in many of the Peanutsanimated television specials. Named for the fictional siblings Linus and Lucyvan Pelt, it was released in 1964 on the Vince Guaraldi Trio's album Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named CharlieBrown. A Charlie Brown Christmas introduced thesong to a television audience of millions of children beginningin 1965. Since that special, the piece has introduced most of the Peanuts TVcartoons, with the exceptions of the specials and other TV programs producedbetween 1979 and 1992. It is one of the most recognizable pieces by Vince Guaraldi, and hasgained status as the de facto theme song of the Peanuts franchise. Linus and Lucy is a popular jazz piano composition writtenby VinceGuaraldi, used in many of the Peanutsanimatedtelevision specials. Named for the cartoon characters,siblings Linus and Lucy van Pelt,it was on the Vince Guaraldi Trio?s 1964 album Jazz Impressions of a BoyNamed Charlie Brown. This is the very emotive "Solace" by Scott Joplin. Originally for piano, this arrangement is carefully scored for clarinet quartet (three Bb soprano clarinets and one Bb bass clarinet). This is a wonderful piece for both concert and contest. This is arranged within the comfortable playing range of the instruments, in a common keysign, with technical considerations worked out and with many useful rehearsal numbers for easy preparation. With attention to the rubato character of the piece, this is a highly expressive piece and very suitable for clarinet quartet.
