String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - SKU: A0.534402 Composed by Jacques Leguerney. 20th Century,Standards. Score and parts. 125 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3457403. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534402). Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) composed two string quartets. The Premier Quatuor à cordes was composed in 1925 during Leguerneyâ??s private piano and composition study with French pianist Thérèse Cahen. His second quartet, subject of this publication by Musik Fabrik, was written between November 1947 and September 1948. The four movements are: I. Allegro moderato; II. Intermezzo; III. Scherzando; IV. Presto-Andantino. This work was, in part, Leguerneyâ??s response to the Premier Quatuor à cordes (inédit) by his colleague, Henri Sauguet. Leguerney stated in a personal interview with Patrick Choukroun (18 May 1989) that: â??I wrote it a bit in opposition to Sauguetâ??s Premier Quatuor. It seemed to me that his quartet was without interest: just scratchings! I wanted to express my way of looking at it from the classical viewpoint of the past: it is almost in the spirit of Mozart, except for the harmonic language, of course. In fact, I wanted to fight against everything that has been done to a quartet since Beethovenâ??s last ones.â? The premiere of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur was by the Quatuor Pro Arte at the Abbaye de Royaumont. Before this performance, Poulenc sent Leguerney the following note: â??Fortunate man for whom twelve strings are enough to charm people, I wish you good luck and respectfully embrace you.â? (Handwritten letter, Reims, 4 September 1959). Leguerney was appointed artistic director of the Lumen recording company in 1951, and remained in this position until 1959. He produced four recordings of his music, including the Quatuor Pro Arteâ??s recording of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur (1947-1948) (Lumen, LD 2.440, 1958). This disc won the Grand Prix du Disque de lâ??Académie Charles Cros on 13 March 1959. The Pro Arteâ??s members were Suzanne Plazonich, Violin I; Chantal Beylier, Violin II; Nicole Gendreau, Viola; and Micheline Burtin, Cello. Francis Poulenc wrote to Leguerney concerning this recording: â??It is very good Leguerney. Of course, frivolous as I am and shall always remain, it is the 2nd movement that I prefer. Between us, I am like you: I prefer the scherzos after the andantes; that way one is not forced to write a Finale allegro. Yours pleases me very much, in fact, so to my ears it is III-IV-I-II, in the order of pleasure.â? (Manuscript letter, Bagnols, 14 October 1959) The radio station France I broadcast the Quatuor with on 11 July 1959 on the program Schola of the series Concert de musique contemporaine, again with the Quatuor Pro Arte. An archive recording of this broadcast exists on magnetic tape. Critic Claude Rostand wrote: â??Jacques Leguerney does not seem to have looked for special innovations either in form or language. His basic thought seems especially to have written a quartet, that is to say on one hand to have used the four voices with elegance and originality, clarity and homogeneity (four-part writing seems to always have come naturally to him, even at the piano), and on the other hand to exploit all of the supple cushioning that can result from the caress of a bow on a string.â? Critic Emile Vuillermoz wrote: â??His only ambition is to expresses clear and affectionate melodic ideas, in a highly distinguished, elegant and refined language, meaning an homage, in the beginning of our century, to the trios of the greatest stylists of our time. In fact, it is from the vocabulary of Fauré, Debussy and Ravel that he takes his grammar and syntax and that with which he carries out with his this harmonic writing that is both supple and sparse, that is so congenial to the association of four string instruments. This quartet, whose first movement is of a rare perfection, is a delicate enchantment.â? The Musik Fabrik edition of the Quatuor à cordes en ré mineur is taken from a photocopy of the composerâ??s manuscript of the full score. We also had access to the quartet parts found in Leg.

SAXpress.com #976708. Published by SAXpress.com (A0.1393227). Élégie, Op. 24 by Gabriel Fauré, arranged for Baritone Saxophone and Piano. Composed in 1889, It is one of a number of significant works for cello composed by French composer Gabriel Fauré. Élégie, Op.24 was conceived as the slow movement of a cello sonata. The sonata was never completed. Élégie was first performed in 1883 and later published as a stand-alone piece. The work features a somber opening then an intense central section before returning to the elegiac opening theme in C minor.Elegie is dedicated to the cellist Jules Loeb, who gave the first performances accompanied by the composer in December 1883. It was later orchestrated and performed at the Societe Nationale in April 1901, with Pablo Casals as the soloist and the composer as conductor.Fauré later orchestrated this work for cello and orchestra. Many other arrangements exist as solo with piano. This version is for solo baritone saxophone with piano. Difficulty level: advanced. The bari sax part extends well into the altissimo range. Alternate notes are provided in the part for performers who do not wish to play altissimo.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1453498 Composed by Sy Brandon. 21st Century,Contest,Festival. 235 pages. Sy Brandon #1032727. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.1453498). Legacy is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission in 2007 by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor and rewritten for chamber orchestra in 2023. I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate isquieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!” A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries brings the movement to a close. II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressing the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCullough's book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement. III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato creating a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity. Score prints on legal size paper and parts on letter.

Instrumental Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.818281 By Stephen R Dalrymple. By Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Edited by Stephen R Dalrymple. Romantic Period. Individual part. 18 pages. Stephen R Dalrymple #4966281. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818281). Élegié in E Flat Minor for solo piano (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ by Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (Opus 3.1) ♫ Rachmaninoff (born in 1873) , Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor, was considered one of the finest pianists of his day. His compositions belong to the Romantic period of music history. He graduated at the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. After the premiere of his First Symphony in 1897, the negative reaction by an important critic sent him into a tailspin of depression that lasted several years. ♫ In 1909 he performed a series of 26 performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA. In 1914 he travelled to England for a concert tour. ♫ In February 1917 on the day the Socialist Revolution began in St Petersburg, he performed a benefit piano recital in Moscow for wounded Russian soldiers. When he returned home, he found that a group of Social Revolutionary Party members had seized his property as their own communal property. He had invested most of his earnings on the estate, but left it behind. Rachmaninoff's concert performance in Yalta on 5 September 1917 was to be his last in Russia. The chaos and tension of the October Revolution was daunting. He composed with the noise of gunshots and rallies in the background. He received an invitation to perform 10 recitals across Scandinavia. He accepted the offer, using it as an excuse to obtain permits so he and his family could flee Russia. ♫ He returned to the USA in November 1918 and America became his home. When he became an American citizen in 1943, Sergei Rachmaninoff said: “This is the only place on earth where a human being is respected for what he is and what he does, and it does not matter who he is and where he came from.†He died in March 1943 from cancer at the age of 70. (condensed from Wikipedia - October 2022) ♫ Rachmaninoff’s Opus 3 contains 5 piano pieces. The first is the Élegié in E Flat Minor, the second is the Prelude in C# Minor (one of his most famous piano compositions). This opus was finished in 1892, when he was 19 years old. The Prelude in C# Minor is loud, explosive, and declarative; the Élegié in E Flat Minor is soft, fluid, and contemplative. ♫ Edited for 10 inch tablet by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Sequenced by the Editor ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I use an Amazon Kindle with Mobile Sheets Pro and an Air Turn blue tooth foot pedal to practice and perform piano music. Similar products available to provide other tablets the same functionality. ♫ The pieces in this series have not been arranged, but most have been edited slightly, and have been formatted to fit screen size. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages. These kinds of section repeats were invented to spare the composer’s time and the cost of extra paper and ink. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. There are several programs available online that will allow you to separate this .pdf file into 2 .pdf files to make it more useful.

My Elegy brings a musical blessing for both the Black and Blue communities as a musical prayer for peace and understand between the two groups. Elegy was written as a Trumpet sonata a few decades ago for the outstanding trumpet player Ralph Dudgeon. He has performed it often and the new Elegy Trio version was performed by Eastfield College faculty member Oscar Passley. It begins and ends with a peaceful hymn-like melody echoed in the trumpet and cello. The middle section portrays a battle scene with wild rhythm clashes.

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977037). This is a unique and challenging solo piece for bass virtuosos that combines Chinese musical expression with various other bass techniques. As well as using pizzicato in a quasi guitar-like way to produce different contrapuntal voices, it utilizes the bass' melodic expressiveness (its elegance) and ability to produce heavy aggressive textures (its strength). The expressive techniques of Chinese guqin and erhu music also appear as special types of vibrato and pitch bends. Though it isn't really Chinese music, it does mimic the elegant phrasing and flexible expression of such Chinese music.

Published by Zack Richards (A0.894386). During my undergraduate career at The University of Akron, like many college students, I went through a year of trying to discover what I really wanted to do. In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies. After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition. This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program. To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions! It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting. It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine. There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument. It's a piece for advanced players for sure, but a great feature for any group willing to give it a go!Brass QuintetAdvancedApprox. 6:30Visit zackrichards.com for more from this composer!

Tuba Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.917229 Composed by Robert Chamberlin. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 5 pages. Robert Chamberlin #4622313. Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917229). Dr. Gary Bird assembled and edited a volume in 1994 called Program Notes for the Solo Tuba. In it, he assembled information on what were determined to be the eighty-eight most important works for solo tuba written to that point in time. Robert Chamberlin’s Elegy (for solo tuba) was very deservedly included in the catalogue of works in that very important assemblage. Elegy was composed in 1981 for tubist, Jerry Young, and was written in collaboration with both Young and Daniel Perantoni. It was composed as a response to the assassination of Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian head-of-state who, along with Israeli Premier Menachem Begin and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, forged the peace agreement between those two countries that endures to this day. Chamberlin said: It is an expression of my sadness and anger that people resort to that particular type of violence for political gain. Since its premiere performance by Jerry Young at Webster University in 1981, the work has been performed in many venues by many soloists, and it almost always resonates with and touches very diverse audiences. The work uses a wide variety of expressive techniques, including multiphonics, pitch bends, half-valve technique, glissandi, whispering through the instrument, and the tuba mute. Perhaps the most striking and emotionally touching effect is that the entire work is played with the bell of the instrument pointed into the open lid of a grand piano with the sustain pedal depressed. The harmonic and echo-like acoustic effects created are stunning in every performance and venue. This is an outstanding musical artwork appropriate for any recital, but also very effective in settings where unexpected or tragic loss are being marked. It speaks to listeners of all backgrounds in a very pronounced way that few works seem to achieve. While it is in every sense a virtuoso work, it is one that repeatedly rewards both performer and audience.

Small Ensemble Cello,Clarinet,Harp,Viola,Violin - Level 5 - SKU: A0.898932 Composed by Gilad Cohen. Contemporary. Score and parts. 148 pages. Gilad Cohen #4286339. Published by Gilad Cohen (A0.898932). Firefly Elegy uses a 12-note melodic theme, which through the course of the piece undergoes a series of transformations - mirroring the metamorphosis that takes place over a firefly's brief life span. The piece comprises four sections that reflect the four life stages of the firefly. During the motionless egg stage, some types of fireflies glow dimly; the opening section of the piece (following a short fanfare of flashing-light) is likewise static and calm, while at the same time features an internal motion hinting at subdued energy. The following groovy section is at times aggressive, not unlike the firefly during its larva stage, when it is hunting and digesting insects using special enzymes. The firefly hibernates through the pupa stage - reflected in the third section of the piece by seemingly everlasting sustained chords in the strings. Like a flash of light, each new phrase begins with an ascending scale, while the harp provides groups of repeated notes, recalling the synchronized flashes that are found in groups of tropical fireflies. Firefly Elegy ends with an elegy in which the now mature firefly looks back at its life. It has gone through such an extensive journey but only long enough to mate and lay eggs, sometimes without feeding during its adult stage. In the summertime, I often watch the firefly in his lonely flutter, flashing about and looking for a mate so he can complete the sole purpose of his short life before dying away. He must sometimes look back and wonder: was it all worth it?

Published by Ronan Bodisch (A0.1095833). This intense and emotional piece draws inspiration from classical/romantic composers, such as Edward Elgar, while also mixing in modern elements. Performance Notes: Dissonance is very common in this piece. It will not help the orchestra if the players cower away from it, rather than play it confidently. Don't second-guess whether or not the right notes are being played. Be sensitive to whoever has the moving line, as it is passed around the orchestra. At measure 22, the Violas and Cellos should soar above the violins. At measures 26-30, everyone in the orchestra should be playing as loud as humanly possible (go crazy, go bananas), while still remaining sensitive to the moving melodies; this is the composer's signature theme. Be mindful of the key change at measure 35 (F Maj/D Min to B-Flat Maj/G Min). In the end, Violins, Violas, and Cellos should decrescendo to literally nothing on the tremolos. The basses should emphasize pizzicato, but play it lightly, rather than thunderous. The chords in the Harp and Piano should also be brought out.

This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. The middle section of this movement, with all the tremolos and trills, works much better for strings than for double reeds. Still, I was fairly pleased with how the recording of it turned out. The outer sections of the movement are quite difficult because of the extreme ranges that are consistently needed.

Consequently, 'Elegy' adopts the compositional style of the Habanera. I first met John W. Subsequently, thereafter I met him several times at the same event and was always struck by his enthusiasm to generously share his knowledge about music. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533316). Fantaisie en sol mineur pour pianoI. GraveII. ScherzandoIII. Bien allantDate de composition : 17 septembre 1945In 1945 Leguerney finished composition of the Fantaisie en sol mineur pour piano, written in three movements. He felt an â??extraordinary enthusiasmâ? for this piece, which he felt represented a departure from the current writing style for piano. He said in an interview with Patrick Choukroun in 1994 that â??I wanted to show that one could write lyrically for the piano. The piano music of Francis Poulenc lacked strength.â? The work was immediately performed in a private concert at the home of the Countess Jean de Polignac by the French pianist Monique Haas (1909-1987) in December 1945. The fact that she waschosen to perform Leguerneyâ??s Fantaisie is a key to the style of this work which Leguerney felt emulated the expressive force of Cesar Franckâ??s works. Haas was a distinguished concert artist, especially known for her performances of 20th century music, with which she toured worldwide. French pianists of her generation tried to avoid the excess of the â??romanticâ? school and strove for cleanness and precision with a warm tone color reflecting the influence of Alfred Cortot.Leguerney remembers that both Poulenc and Henri Sauguet were present at this private concert, but he noted that they did not comment about his piece. He felt it was obvious that his Fantaisie was â??far from the habitual level of piano musicâ? being composed at that time. These post-war years were Leguerneyâ??s most productive period. In addition to the Fantaisie, hecomposed the Sonatine pour violin et piano, the Quatuor à cordes, and many fine songs including the cycle Sept Poèmes de François Maynard. The 1940s finished with the composition of his first ballet, Endymion. The first public performance of the Fantaisie was given by Stéphane Petit-Jean in the Cloître Saint-Sauveur at the Festival of Aix-en-Provence on July 28, 1988 during a recital for Radio France that included songs of Leguerney interpreted by Nathalie Stutzmann. The concert was laterbroadcast as Une heure avec . . . Jacques Leguerney and also included the song cycles Sept Poèmes de François Maynard, La Nuit and Le Carnaval. The work is dedicated to Jean Fonda, the stage name of Jean-Pierre Fournier. He was the son of the famed French cellist Pierre Fournier. Before the performance at Aix-en-Provence, Leguerney showed the score of the Fantaisie to Fonda, who encouraged him to have it performed. It is possible that the dedication was made at this time.

She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since. The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.1141957). “Allegories†is a five-movement composition based upon Aesop’s Fables. It was commissioned by and dedicated to Frank Meredith. The first movement “The Trumpeter Taken Captive†is a fable about how one’s actions affect the outcome. The trumpeter, who incites others to do battle, is as guilty as those who slay the enemy. The euphonium represents the trumpeter by playing battle tunes. Then the ensemble plays capture music, begging music, fatal music representing the slaying of the trumpeter (euphonium), and finally music representing the moral of the story. “The Boy Who Cried Wolf†is the basis for the second movement. The allegory is that nobody believes a liar. The flute plays a shepherd’s tune to represent the bored shepherd boy. The ensemble plays excited music three times as the boy cries wolf, the first two times just to amuse himself. After the third time when nobody responds to his cries, the flute plays a lament to end the movement. The third movement reflects the story of “The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg.†A golden euphonium melody accompanied by rich harmony represents the golden eggs laid by the goose. The ensemble then plays greedy music that is followed by a minor key lament as the farmer has killed his rich source of income because of his greed. A sweet dancing flute solo begins movement four appropriately named “The Fisherman and His Flute.†This short fable has the allegory of “timing is everything.†The poor fisherman expected the fish to jump out of the sea in response to his flute playing to no avail. When the ensemble plays a similar tune, it represents his success when he uses his net. The fisherman says “you bloody fish, when I played the flute you wouldn’t dance, but as soon I stopped, you started up.†The race between the “Tortoise and the Hare†is the subject of the last movement. The plodding euphonium represents the tortoise and the fast and agile flute represents the hare. The flute takes a nap in the middle of the movement and by the time the flute wakes up, it is too late to catch up with the slow and steady tortoise. The race is not always to the swift.
