The piece features the famed Bell Carol, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman, O Come O Come Emmanuel, and even quotes some others like Jingle Bells and What Child is This. This piece was premiered in 2012 as an exciting holiday concert closer for a combined 7th and 8th grade band in a gym that was boomy and really loud (but also epic).

This woodwind quintet arrangement turns the traditional French carol Patapan into a Patapan Fantasy, which also includes quotes from the carols God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Joy to the World, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, We Three Kings of Orient Are, and Good King Wenceslas, representing carols from England, France, the Czech Republic, and the United States. It is perfect for all holiday events, gatherings, recitals, or caroling gigs. The arrangement was written for most ensembles, from advanced high school quintets to college ensembles to professional quintets. What appealed to me most about this piece was that it's pitched in a minor key, making it slightly different from most Christmas carols. The lyrics are similar to The Little Drummer Boy: When you hear the fife and drum, dance and make the village hum. I have included an alternate bass clarinet part in lieu of a missing bassoon. Originally scored for piano, I hope you enjoy this unique setting for winds. If you like this arrangement, you might also like my woodwind quintet arrangement of the 16thC Spanish carol Riu Riu Chiu. Christmas Day is a choral fantasy on old carols, was written in 1910. It was originally composed for SATB with parts for a sizeable orchestra. It lasts for about seven minutes. The work was dedicated ‘To the music students of Morley College’. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students’ ‘Tea and Social’ event. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’ The Duration is approx. 6.16 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.

Written in 1910 and dedicated to the music students of Morley College, Gustav Holst wrote Christmas Day for choir and a sizable orchestra to perform a series of old Christmas carols. Themes and variants of In Dulci Jubilio (Good Christian Men Rejoice), God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The First Nowell, and Come Ye Lofty, Come Ye Lonely are interwoven throughout the piece with Holst's clever craftsmanship, and although the composer and his heirs thought little of the work, it has enjoyed popularity as a seasonal choir piece. This setting revises the original orchestral/choir version note for note for the modern concert band with no concessions made except for some slight key shifts in consideration for band. This composer also likes featuring neglected sections, when possible, so the opening alto solo is arranged for a lone tuba to take before the piece opens up for everyone else.
