Ricucci-HillA trio for flute, cello, and piano, Advanced, 52 PagesForest Rituals (2016, rev. 2017) is a piece with various layers. On the surface, it is a trio based around the image of a pagan ritual occuring at the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon, full of life, dance, reverence, and mystery. On a deeper, more personal level, it is a piece about new beginnings. Ricucci-Hill wrote the piece for the Zodiac Music Academy and Festival in Valdeblore, France which was their first international performance as well as their first music festival. Upon returning, the piece was revised utilizing the knowledge and experience gained from the festival, which foresaw a shift in their compositional voice. Forest Rituals was awarded 3rd in the 2017 Abundant Silence Composition Competition.

It is only after my studies at the Juilliard School in 2015 that I decided to set them to music. Each of the songs had to have, like the poems themselves, its distinct style. Accordingly, I came up with the idea of making them - to a certain extent - style studies. In the dedication line under every song title in this edition you will find the name of the composer whose style I gave my best to emulate. The first song, Spleen, is dedicated to Olivier Messiaen. The second song, Silence, is dedicated to Gérard Grisey. The third and last song, La Reine (The Queen), is dedicated to Francis Poulenc.​-Alexander Liebermann.

If I neglect to close the piano lid, I’ll sometimes hear them walk across the piano keys in the middle of the night, waking up the house with dissonant clusters of notes going high to low, or low to high- this was the initial inspiration for these three pieces for piano about cats.Birds at the Window - We have hung our birdfeeder outside our window. The windowsill is a favorite spot for the kitties to relax and stretch in the sun. When the birds come to feed, the cats bristle with excitement as they chatter and swat at the window. The birds seem to know they are safe and fly around freely.Kitty’s Dream - Housecats spend most of their life sleeping or dozing. I’ve read that cats do dream. I wonder what they dream of.The Laser Pointer - The kitties seem to know that we are teasing them with the laser pointer, but they can’t fight the instinct to chase it. They feign disinterest, hoping to catch the dot off guard. In a flash they leap for the dot, skidding wildly. Of course, they never catch it. I almost feel bad for laughing. Eventually, they will become frustrated and disgusted with this game and slink away.-Michael Close.

Nathan Hall's 24 Preludes is a collaboration with pianist Rose Lachman. The preludes are part of a well-tread lineage including collections by Scriabin, Chopin, and Bach. There is one short movement for every key, major and minor, often exploring a single musical idea. Twelve movements correspond to the months of the calendar year, inspired by landscapes in the 13th century book of hours the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. The other alternating twelve correspond to the qualities of the Zodiac signs that fit most within that timeframe. While they often take unexpected and curious turns, their imagery is always evocative, imaginative, and engaging.Nathan Hall’s works have been called “fearless” in their multifaceted expressions of the composer’s personal and musical identity. Nathan uses music as an artistic medium to explore a variety of fields including science, nature, the fine arts, history, and sexuality. Nathan Hall is a former Fulbright Fellow to Iceland, and holds his Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His works and collaborations have been performed and exhibited around the world and his music has won numerous awards. He currently lives in Denver, Colorado.

On the Wing, A Celebration of Birds is a song cycle which celebrates nature, creativity and its connection to the human spirit. The cycle includes twelve songs set to original poetry about birds written by poet Mary Pinard. Since the dawn of time humans have seen birds as symbols of inspiration, beauty and wonderment. Among these symbols are: love, fidelity, freedom, spirituality, naturalness, constancy, independence, adaptability, innocence, creativity and a deep expression of the human spirit. This song cycle addresses these symbols and takes the listener on a personal journey through the many images represented by birds. I envision On the Wing as a community-building tool to help bring people together to celebrate, study and to take personal responsibility to insure the continuation of birds and their habitat. “On the Wing†explores numerous topics about birds, including their traits, vocalizations, migrations, environments, vanishing species, and address themes of conservation, ecological stewardship, and species preservation.

When I read Charles Simic’s poem, The Lunatic for the first time, I was impressed by the minimalist but evocative feel of the work. The poem describes the nature of a snowflake. As I read it more, I felt an unusual fixation on the action of the snowflake. The piece starts off by depicting the erratic nature of the snowflake in the right hand of the piano. It then transitions into descending plaintive, melancholy music. The singer repeats ‘’The same snowflake kept falling out of the great sky’’ three times but each time more bothered and adding words from the poem. I tried to convey the obsessive nature that the POV expresses along with the piano material depicting the falling and ‘’picking itself off the ground’’ that the snowflake does.

It was my goal to write one etude a day and the entire piece was written within a week. Each etude has its own specific mood and character and is focused on a particular aspect of piano technique I was working on in my lessons. I attempted to create in music a lakeidoscope of different colors and atmospheres, which, when grouped together, create a set of short, fun, up-beat pieces.

It was self-assigned in an effort to deepen my own understanding of musical connectivity. There is a lot of math and manipulation in this composition, making it a good choice for analysis. However, musical communication is far more complicated than connectivity. Each short says something in particular to the performer. I might name the theme Less is more. The first variation communicates a daring sense of risk. And so on. Of course, this is delightfully subjective! Some of these variations are technical beasts. The winner of the 2019 American Prize in Composition (Vocal Chamber Music division) and Finalist for the 2020 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, Zach maintains an active schedule as a composer and collaborator across the globe. His works have been performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Bulgaria’s National Palace of Culture, Norway’s Arctic Cathedral, Hamburg’s Zinnschmelze Cultural Center, New York University Steinhardt and Shanghai, the DiMenna Center, International Trumpet Guild and National Saxophone Alliance conferences, and at schools and conservatories throughout North America. Since beginning compositional studies in 2013, his works have garnered over 25 national and international awards. Zach is also active as a pianist and conductor, having appeared as concerto soloist, chamber musician, solo recitalist, and champion of young composers’ works at the keyboard and podium. He holds a B.A. in piano performance and composition/theory, summa cum laude, from Linfield College, an M.M. in composition from Mannes College of Music, and a D.M.A. in composition and M.M. in music theory pedagogy from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied under Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. In his spare time, Zach is active in American Kennel Club dog sports, traveling the country as a licensed Dog Agility judge. Don’t ask him about the (countless) similarities between composing and designing Agility courses unless you have hours to spare! Born in Los Angeles and raised in Oregon, Zach currently resides in Jersey City, NJ.

PROGRAM NOTE: Hypochondriasis refers to worry about having a serious illness, also known as health phobia or illness anxiety disorder. In hypochondriasis, the patient doubts and distrusts the doctors' diagnosis, and a doctor's reassurance about their complete medical evaluation is unconvincing.The piece depicts the patients' feelings such as fear, anxiety, and disbelief. The rhythmic and thematic (including specific pitch sets) materials represent this emotional complexity in the context of doctor shopping. Many short musical gestures are agitated, fugitive, and aggressive, yet they are also emotional, expressive and dramatic. These active motions seek a solution. Each of the six short movements contains their own motivic ideas, but are always unified to a central point. A certain pitch, such as D#, represents the positive desire of the mind.Duration: ca. 7'40'' Â

We asked Ayumi to write a suite of pieces following a favorite fairy tale called The Light Princess by 19th Century author George MacDonald (mentor and role model to such greats as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien). One of our goals as a duo is to begin playing more children's concerts, and we thought this piece would be a great addition to a program for the childlike. A young man comes to Siddhatta Gotama with a barrage of ontological questions: how long has the universe been in existence, who created it, etc. Gotama replies with an analogy:It's just as if a man were wounded with an arrow thickly smeared with poison. His friends & companions, kinsmen & relatives would provide him with a surgeon, and the man would say, 'I won't have this arrow removed until I know whether the man who wounded me was a noble warrior, a priest, a merchant, or a worker.' He would say, 'I won't have this arrow removed until I know the given name & clan name of the man who wounded me.'[...]The man would die and those things would still remain unknown to him.*​In the Buddha's teaching, speculative philosophies are not important; what matters is figuring out how to overcome suffering in everyday life. We will all die without answering the mysteries of physics and metaphysics. So the appropriate thing to do is to focus significant attention on living a better life here and now.The first movement of The Poison Arrow depicts suffering, and a frantic, often fruitless, attempt to find a way out. The second movement is a depiction of life without suffering, completely placid and free.
