Reflection is a solo for 4.3-octave marimba. It was written in dedication to beloved friends and family who are no longer with me, but I always reflect on the good times I had with them. The piece utilizes a consistent flow of sixteenth notes. The beginning is straightforward with an intermingling of odd and even time signatures. The middle section is where the theme of reflection is shown. The entire range of the marimba is explored with an ever-present push-and-pull in the tempo. The end (coda) is a subtler nod to the opening theme and finishes with a delicate arpeggio.

We've been through many good and bad emotions. We have been recieving news, some good, some upsetting. Some days we are so happy, we want to jump everywhere and on others we want to bawl our eyes out. And that's how it is. Jolt plays through all of these emotions, the good and bad ones. It represent how sometimes, we are so happy about something, but it doesnt work out. It represents how sometimes, we hope for something that will never occur. It represents how sometimes in life, there are things that upset us. But in the end, we are stronger than those bad feelings. We are stronger than sadness, than the madness we sometimes feel dealing with those challenges. Sometimes we feel thrown around. At the end of the day, it will always get better. It will always work out. __________________________________________________ *As you may have noticed, this piece is graded with three different levels. Most instruments have two levels: beginner and advanced (grade 1 and 4), but some of the most common instruments in a concert band (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet and percussion) have an extra intermediate level (grade 2.5). This piece has been written for bands or classes that have student of different levels, but still want to play together. The final piece in the three-part song cycle, the young girl has grown up and has taken on the role of a woman. The piece itself is very slow moving, as the woman’s life has significantly slowed down, she’s no longer the young girl filled with hope, she knows what her duty is. The piano itself is always rising, sometimes in major thirds but then followed by clunky seconds and thirds. With a feeling of rush but also as if the whole piece is about to end and resolve, yet it continues in this cycle. Still, there’s reward in her work, a woman gets to see her child grow, and their dreams become her own. As any woman can tell you, there is a reward to being a good mother, wife, and woman. But it is only one that a woman can recognize.

Pura Alegria Brass Sextet and Keyboard 3 Trumpets, 3 Trombones and Keyboard Composed for the Stirling High School Brass Ensemble, in East London, South Africa MBR 3430 By Eddie Lewis Spice up your brass program with this Latin tinged composition for three trumpets, three trombones and keyboard. Pura Alegria is one of Eddie Lewis’ en clave compositions, where every rhythm from every phrase in the piece is derived from the clave. The clave is a rhythm from west Africa that came to the tropical islands with the slaves. From there, hundreds of years later, the rhythm became the underlying groove for a number of modern Latin dance music styles. Eddie Lewis was exposed to the clave rhythms during a period of twenty years when he was making his living primarily as a salsa trumpet player. While Eddie’s compositions are not salsa, his writing has been forever influenced by that music and the people. And that influence is not limited to only the rhythms. We are only emphasizing the rhythms here because of the prominence of the clave in Pura Alegria. Stirling High School, East London, South Africa Eddie composed Pura Alegria for the students in the brass ensemble at Stirling High School in East London, South Africa. The students prepared it as part of a presentation and Eddie was honored to contribute something for them to work on and perform. The request came from Eddie’s good friend, Leonard Brandt. Leonard is a professional trumpet player in South Africa and also teaches applied brass at the high school. When Eddie was in South Africa for the jazz festival in Grahamstown (2016), Leonard arranged a personal performance of Pura Alegria for him in one of the empty classrooms. The composition was a smashing success and the students and the audience all enjoyed it! Skill Level When Eddie does a commission, he goes to great lengths to map out the skills of the individual players. Often times, his method’s skill levels don’t apply. Please keep in mind that skill levels in published music are not about how good the students are. Students will always have mixed skill sets. That’s part of what it means to be human. We are good at some things and bad at others. So the skills of the individual parts in Pura Alegria are varied, not only from part to part, but from skill to skill. That said, the highest note in the first trumpet part is written high C, and the rhythms are syncopated (because of the clave influence). We would put most of that first part in our Trumpet Pro skill level. The highest note in the second part is written A above the staff. The highest note in the third trumpet part is top line F. Practice Recommendations Pay special attention to the articulations, which can feel a little awkward, but really make the piece. Sometimes the eighth-notes are long and the quarter-notes are short. Other times the quarter-notes are long and the eighth-notes are short. Also be careful with the dynamics. There will be a tendency to play the entire piece too loud. Because it feels like that kind of piece. However, if you play it that way, it will ruin some of the compositional effects. This is especially true for the keyboard. The notes, staff, and all elements are proportionately enlarged to 2 or 2.5 times the size of regular sheet music. This size is what the majority of our low-vision musicians have requested. You will find that some pages have 2 measures on a line, some have 3 or 4. This variation depends on the number of notes in each measure, as well as the difficulty of each individual passage. For example, if a measure has only a few notes, or a tie, that measure will be less spacious than a measure with many notes or challenging fingerings or other passages that would be made easier by roomier note spacing. The goal of our large print sheet music is to make the music easier to read, easier to see, and easier to play for the majority of musicians. There are many reasons why musicians look for large print music. They may be a low-vision musician, or they may have good vision, but be performing in a low light environment. Sometimes, music teachers select our large print music arrangements for students who are new to reading music. The wide staff line spacing and larger notes make it easier to navigate through a piece when a student is new to reading notes on lines and spaces. We always encourage input and ideas, and we welcome requests for custom arrangements. We can create large print music that is larger or smaller than what we have published here. Each note, each line, each measure is individually adapted to large print. This is done manually, by a real person who actually plays each piece to be sure it has improved readability. This set makes up a good suite for concert performance. Although listed as a tuba ensemble compositions, euphoniums usually play the higher two parts. All three are written in five parts. Optional substitute parts for French Horn and Flüglehorn are also included in this set, as well as euphonium parts in treble clef.Salutation Fanfarewas composed in 1985 for performance at the New York Brass Conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. That year, famous tubist Harvey Phillips was being honored at a special concert. This piece started the concert with the composer conducting an ensemble of about twenty euphonium and tuba players made up of Indiana University alumni, free-lance musicians and other friends of Mr. Phillips. The piece is based on the phrase Harvey Phillips Mr. Tuba. Simple Giftsis a traditional American folksong that has been arranged by many composers over the years. This arrangement was done in 1990 for performance at the International Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association Conference held in Sapporo, Japan. It was premiered by the Colonial Tuba Quartet that year. It has been arranged in four parts as well as this arrangement in five parts.Octubafest Polkawas composed in 1976 at the request of Harvey Phillips for performance at the Octubafest activities at Indiana University. It was premiered by the Indiana University Tuba Ensemble that year, conducted by Harvey Phillips. Mr. Phillips was the first to use the word Octubafest, probably in 1974 or 1975. Octubafest celebrations have taken place at many schools and universities ever since, usually in the month of October. He said that having an Octubafest celebration early in the school year provided an opportunity for new students entering college to get to know each other. At Indiana University during Harvey Phillips’ tenure (1973 – 1996) the Octubafest concerts were always followed by a party at Harvey’s house, making for a good time for all. Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over ninety compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, including First Prize in the 1991 TUBA International Etude Composition Competition, for his Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tubaan important part of the tuba pedagogy repertoire. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe and have been performed extensively throughout the world. He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanish composers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanish bands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize. He has thirty-three compositions commercially recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Records and others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.

This 3.75 minute arrangement first states the first line of the hymn a few times then continues so when the line reaches the end of the phrase and holds, the material giving the rest to what the ear hears as the resting spots of the melodic statement finds the melody restated to provide the ear its resting, resulting in a constant infusion thus, a litany. Using the voix celeste, this is a very well received writing. It happens the day after I finished this my mother passed. I have used this as prelude and offertory. Good for students needing help with learning legato. A favorite of my congregation, I always am thanked by someone each time it is presented for having played it. Good instruction for providing easy pedal part that slowly spans from Eb1 to F3 then back to Eb1 by step progression. Tune name: Slane.
