Legend has it that as a young man, Samuel Trevor Francis contemplated committing suicide by jumping into the Thames River from the Hungerford Bridge in London. Experiencing the love of Jesus, he wrote these lyrics and went on to write many poems, hymns, and became a preacher, in addition to being a merchant sailor.
