Recorder Ensemble. 11 pages. Drachen Music #687370. Published by Drachen Music (A0.1083527). The Cantigas de Santa Maria, or “Canticles of Holy Maryâ€, is a collection of over 400 poems set to music. The text of the Cantigas is written in the medieval Galician-Portuguese language. The poems were collected during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile El Sabio (1221–1284) and are characterized by the fact that every one of them mentions the Virgin Mary (with over 300 being about miracles) and that every tenth poem in the collection is an actual hymn. Alfonso sent scribes throughout the region to collect these poems and thus it is not only one of the largest collections of monophonic songs from the Middle Ages it is also one of the first mass collections of living culture in history. Though all are attributed to Alfonso, it has been determined that much of the musical notation, scribing, and illumination was completed by artisans of his court. This arrangement FEATURES Full Score and Individual Parts for one cantiga as Interpreted by the Arranger from the Original Mensural Notation into a performance quality arrangement for SATB recorders. Note: Song titles are medieval Galician-Portuguese language and are derived by the arranger from the first line of each cantiga lyric. The song was selected to enter the Quatro Estações tour and received quotes from All by Myself, a song originally recorded by Eric Carmen in the 1970s. The studio version has only one instrumental quote from All by Myself. The song was included in the soundtrack of the soap opera O Cravo e a Rosa (2000). German.In his set of five lieder with finale, Fazıl Say sets a selection of contrasting poems from Goethe’s cycle West-Eastern Divan in which the poet skilfully intertwines the intellectual Western world with oriental mysticism. Say creates passages of aria and recitative, the latter being characterised by the conventional accompaniment almost devoid of rhythm beneath quasi-improvisational vocal style, where the aria sections are passionate and dramatic. Key: A minor.The concert piece Paganini Jazz by Fazıl Say, which was inspired by classical, modern and jazz styles, is reminiscent of the music of such greats as Scott Joplin, Art Tatum, Gershwin and Bernstein, and was originally designed as a charming encore work (1988); following the appreciative response of music lovers and, in particular, that of music critics, it was transformed over a perion of time into a more substantial work for piano. Briefly, the piece was rewritten and expanded a number of times between 1988 and 1995. We can evaluate the work as having taken its inspiration from Paganini's renowned 24th Capriccio, transforming it into variations on jazz requiring virtuoso rendition as well as being a creation open to the addition of improvisations and a variety of arrangements. Throughout music history a number of composers have written various works inspired by the 24th Capriccio. We can count among them Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov and Lutoslavski. In Say's work, however, a different aspect must be noted: the composer is prepared to add various developmental passages and transitional improvisations while interpreting this work in concert. Furthermore, when the work is considered as a short encore piece, it is abbreviated in a manner deemed suitable by Say.

My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds. As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments. As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion. In the composition of this string quartet, I have permitted myself to be led by my personality and experiences and have attempted to relate experiences such as divorce, separation and the failure of a relationship in the language of music with the aid of notes and rhythms. As is the case with my other compositions, this quartet is more a work originating from intuition than the description of a historical event, a journey or a place. The beginning of the first movement is somewhat wild, rapid and sorrowful with an irregular rhythm. Intermittent sections ensue which are reminiscent of a jazz club. Living history is our present which we are currently experiencing. The second movement with a melancholic atmosphere is dominated by colours, the subject of searching, the search for a remedy and unhappiness. In contrast, the final movement is intended to express the hatefulness, arguments and disputes within a relationship which have been transformed into a profound trauma.
