Its historic premiere at Pacifica Radio (KPFA) in Berkeley on 4 October, 1991 to inaugurate their new facility is included in Nicolas Slonimsky's book Music Since 1900. It has been reviewed and written about extensively. Published by Freeland Publications (A0.1069678). Duration: 9'21 (2004). A waltz (more or less). Echoes of Chopin, Schubert, Strauss and others. This is an unscored comprovisation (i.e., combination improvisation/composition) which manages to remain motivically unified throughout, in spite of the fact that its structure (and other musical elements) are extemporized. Many of the melodic and contrapuntal details are afterthoughts. I have not encountered any other composers who have conceived of anything quite like this. Comprovisations of this kind offer the best of both musical worlds-the spontaneity of improvisation coupled with the methodical rigor of composition. This is an eminently choreographable work. Good for any festive occasion.

Quite possibly the longest set of piano variations in the entire classical music literature, with the exception, perhaps, of certain sets of variations for piano by Kaikhosru Shapurgi Sorabji. This work ends with a monstrous 35-page long fugue. In the 18th century, Bach composed the Goldberg Variations (30 variations), in the 19th century Beethoven composed the Diabelli Variations (33 variations), in the 20th century Frederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated (36 variations), and now, in the 21st century, Gary Noland has composed his monumental 39 Variations on an Original Theme in F Major. (There seems to be a pattern of three variations added on for each century). This is a work for adventurous first-rate pianists! Some of the variations are self-contained and may be played separate from the whole.I'm fascinated by your variations. Perhaps a marathon performance with many pianists doing several variations? His works range from ragtimey numbers to searching, almost Cecil Taylorish piano explorations to neo-Bachian counterpoint-but all played with a contemporary, idiosyncratic twist or three. He likes setting up, then subverting, the expectations raised by these genres, using effects such as speeding up tempos and slipping up the key signatures. Highly chromatic, neo-Brahmsian post-romantic style, with a spill of 21st-century acid at the end.
