Nigel Williams #3683403. Published by Nigel Williams (A0.763279). Away In A Manger (to the tune 'Mueller') arranged for two flutes and clarinet in Bb. This simple arrangement has the clarinet gently rocking the cradle as the two flutes alternate with the melody. The clarinet part is mainly in the chalumeau register and care has been taken to avoid awkwardness at the break. The flute writing is all within the first and second octaves. The performance duration is approx. one minute and forty five seconds, the full score has the three separate parts attached. This characterful arrangement is ideal any church music group and for junior and middle high school performers. There are five parts, two for mallets and three for percussion, and can be played as a quintet or with multiple players on each part, using the instruments that are available. The two mallet parts can be played on the same type of instruments or different. One way would be for the Mallets 1 part be played on metal instruments, such as bells, metalphones, and vibraphones, and the Mallets 2 part on wooden instruments, such as xylophones and marimbas. Percussion 1 can be played on sleigh bells, jingle bells, tambourines, shakers, maracas, etc. Percussion 2 can be played on snare drums, high drums, wood blocks, triangles, etc. Percussion 2 can be played on bass drums, low drums, cowbells, etc. Being written for beginner ensembles, the parts are easily accessible to percussion ensembles, Â as a percussion feature for a holiday concert, or in a general music class when percussion instruments are being learned.

It is also available in F. This series has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of the ever-changing ensemble combinations that primary and secondary schools and other instrumental ensembles face. Because certain instruments are more comfortable in playing in certain keys, each work will be offered in two keys. This should allow for the music director to choose the key most suitable for the instrumental combination. Each piece consists of five core instrumental parts: 2 treble, 1 alto, tenor and bass. All parts will have a number of transpositions suitable for the instruments that are capable of playing those parts, eg, Part 2 will have parts for violin, B flat clarinet and trumpet, and E flat alto sax.  This will save music directors' time in having to write out additional parts. Optional parts are included for tuned and untuned percussion, guitar (chords) and bass guitar (notation and TAB), a keyboard part appropriate to the difficulty level, and a rehearsal piano part which is a fuller realisation of the piece and could be played by a more advanced student or the music director. If the numbers of players on each part allows, the music director can feel free to 'solo' instruments and vary the orchestration, especially on repeats, to create variety in instrumental colour.

Little Waltz for a Dancing Occasion is intended for junior players and can be performed on virtually any combination of five or more woodwind and/or brass instruments. It is based on my own experience of working with such groups.This waltz is perhaps a little unconventional in that it does not make use of a strong first beat – traditionally played by bass instruments – followed by weaker second and third beats. Furthermore, in this piece most of the phrases are five, seven or nine measures long, thus departing from the four- or eight-measure phrases many players will be used to. From measure 22 the melody in 3/4 time has an accompaniment that is essentially in 2/4 time; I’ve included accents here to help ensure a 2/4 feel. There’s also a rather abrupt ending which, hopefully, will take some by surprise. And everybody gets the tune at some stage, not just the usual melody instruments!The parts included are suitable for the instruments found in groups of learners:flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoonEb alto sax, Bb tenor saxBb trumpet, F/Eb horn, trombone (TC/BC), euphonium (TC/BC), tuba, Bb/Eb bassThe high flute/oboe part is optional.
