I have created this piece sometime in late April 2022 thinking about the difficult situation the world is in (war, potential hunger, broken lives). Then this melody came in naturally. The piece is easy to play for people who studied piano for 2-3 years. It consists of three parts. The initial melody starts with a dissonant created by the melody not belonging to the bass chord. The second part has a more fluent character, which builds tension that is released at the start of the third part. The third part is a variation of the initial melody but with more sad and dark ending.

Little Waltz for a Dancing Occasion is intended for junior players and can be performed on virtually any combination of five or more woodwind and/or brass instruments. It is based on my own experience of working with such groups.This waltz is perhaps a little unconventional in that it does not make use of a strong first beat – traditionally played by bass instruments – followed by weaker second and third beats. Furthermore, in this piece most of the phrases are five, seven or nine measures long, thus departing from the four- or eight-measure phrases many players will be used to. From measure 22 the melody in 3/4 time has an accompaniment that is essentially in 2/4 time; I’ve included accents here to help ensure a 2/4 feel. There’s also a rather abrupt ending which, hopefully, will take some by surprise. And everybody gets the tune at some stage, not just the usual melody instruments!The parts included are suitable for the instruments found in groups of learners:flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoonEb alto sax, Bb tenor saxBb trumpet, F/Eb horn, trombone (TC/BC), euphonium (TC/BC), tuba, Bb/Eb bassThe high flute/oboe part is optional. The glockenspiel is also optional and I’ve mainly included this part so that, if you have a drummer who needs something to do, he or she won’t be tempted to just play bass drum on first beat, snare on second and third beats!The tempo chosen will depend on the abilities of the players.Apart from maybe saving paper, writing two parts on one system does help players to learn to read such charts – something I feel all players should learn to do from an early age.

The first violin part is almost identical to the original, with occasional easing. The second violin part maintains as much of the original as possible too, but without having to leave first position. The third violin part was designed for players towards the end of their first year of lessons, and remains in first hand shape of tone-tone-semitone from each string. The cello part was adapted to avoid the slightly awkward F sharp stretch on the C string, which often leads young cellists out of tune. However, there is a second supplementary score and parts which use the original cello notes. Other supplementary parts include a fourth violin part which is all open strings, a viola part which doubles mostly second violin but sometimes first or third violin to stop the line leaving first position, and a double bass part. Minimum forces for a performance are the first three violin parts with at least one bass clef part (which could also of course be played on a keyboard). Inevitably, the piece loses its purity of being an actual canon of parts, but gains playability. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different melodies and choral texts in the second and sixth (final) movements, respectively; the second uses Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt (Schein, 1628), which Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir (Binemann, 1582) is reserved for the finale. Cantata 156 was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast (72, 73, 111 and 156), it was the last, and the only one scored for solo voice. Like Cantatas 73 and 111, it is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different melodies and choral texts in the second and sixth (final) movements, respectively; the second uses Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt (Schein, 1628), which Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir (Binemann, 1582) is reserved for the finale. This version of the piece was adapted for Contrabassoon along with a piano accompaniment that comes with the product.
