Thinking Händel è un tributo al grande compositore Georg Friedrich Händel, coetaneo di Johann Sebastian Bach, che fu tra i più illustri rappresentanti del barocco musicale. Scrisse opere, oratori e musica strumentale, assimilando gli stili del Settecento che fuse in una sintesi personale e unitaria.I primi successiHändel nacque nel 1685 a Halle, in Germania, da una famiglia senza tradizioni musicali. Iniziò da bambino lo studio della musica, dimostrando subito un grande talento come compositore e organista. All'università di Halle intraprese anche studi giuridici. Nel 1703 si stabilì ad Amburgo, dove lavorò come violinista e dove ebbero luogo le prime esecuzioni di sue musiche, tra cui l'opera Almira, regina di Castiglia (1705).Negli anni successivi compì diversi viaggi in Italia, in Germania e a Londra, dove nel 1711 fu rappresentata con grande successo la sua opera Rinaldo. Nonostante sia oggi conosciuto soprattutto per gli oratori e la musica strumentale, ai suoi tempi Händel fu molto apprezzato per le opere teatrali, prevalentemente composte secondo il modello dell'opera seria italiana (forme musicali). Ambientata in epoca classica, di argomento letterario o di ambientazione mitologica, l'opera seria alterna, in lingua italiana, recitativi e arie. I recitativi, con un'intonazione vicina alla lingua parlata, servivano a far procedere l'azione ed erano accompagnati dal cembalo e a volte dall'orchestra. Le arie, con intonazione melodica, avevano la funzione di esprimere gli stati d'animo o 'affetti' dei personaggi e in esse i cantanti mostravano la propria virtuosistica bravura.Al tempo del soggiorno londinese risalgono anche due significative composizioni orchestrali: le tre suite Musica sull'acqua (1715-36), nate per accompagnare le feste sul Tamigi di re Giorgio I, e i Sei concerti grossi op. 3 (1730-34), ispirati al modello del musicista italiano Arcangelo Corelli.La cittadinanza ingleseNel 1719 Händel promosse la fondazione di una società musicale privata, la Royal academy of music, e ne diventò direttore. Nel 1727 ottenne la cittadinanza inglese e per molti anni dominò la scena musicale britannica. Oltre alle circa quaranta opere teatrali, tra cui Giulio Cesare in Egitto (1723), Rodelinda regina de' Longobardi (1725), Ariodante (1734), Alcina (1735), Serse (1737-38), in questi anni scrisse più di venti oratori ‒ composizioni di argomento religioso, per soli, coro e orchestra ‒ in forma drammatica e in lingua inglese (con narrazione, personaggi e dialogo ma senza scena teatrale), per lo più con testi tratti dall'Antico Testamento (tra cui Esther, 1718, Saul e Israele in Egitto, del 1738 entrambi).L'adesione di Händel alla cultura inglese non fu occasionale, ma profondamente sentita: lo dimostrano alcuni lavori vocali e strumentali, come Acis e Galatea (1718, con una seconda versione nel 1732) e l'Ode per il giorno di s. Cecilia (1739), composti su testi di poeti inglesi di grande rilievo come John Dryden e Alexander Pope.Tra la musica strumentale, Händel dedicò in particolare all'organo, di cui era valente esecutore, ben venti concerti con orchestra.Il Messia e le ultime composizioniL'oratorio Messia è uno dei lavori più conosciuti di Händel: eseguito a Dublino nel 1742, fu scritto per una istituzione benefica in soli ventiquattro giorni. This Suite is the last of a set of six first published by Boivin in Paris in 1727 for two musettes (bagpipes). This arrangement is for pairs of flutes or oboes or violins or two different instruments. It is also suitable for a pair of clarinets or trumpets. The five movements, Prelude, Rondeau. Passacaille, Boureé, Brunette & a pair of Menuets are suitable for players of early intermediate standard and above.The original edition used the ‘violin clef’ which placed the g above middle c on the bottom line of the stave instead of the line above as is usual today. The notation has been modernised for ease of reading. All edits have been indicated using dashed lines or parentheses ( ). No dynamics are marked in the original edition since bagpipes do not usually have means of volume control. The dynamics I have added (in parentheses) are suggestions only. The Suite would have been bought and played by flute, oboe and violin players as well as bagpipers. Boismortier wrote and published a substantial number of chamber works aimed at amateur players which were very popular and made him a very wealthy man.

An introduction quotes snippets of the tune, followed by stanza one for unison congregation with the brass echoing imitatively. The texture changes in stanza two as the French horn takes the foreground in the accompaniment, with the organ supporting the congregation. The final stanza has the trumpets leaping in baroque-like fanfares at first, then the imitative echoes return. This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each stringed instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part for each instrument. Ensemble parts are unique to the specific instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement can be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part.      This arrangement for strings is easy uses 1st and 3rd position for the violin melody. Viola and cello melody parts are in first position. This setting mixes Vivalid's Gloria with Handel's Joy to the World. (Minimal markings, no additional edits, i.e. no fingerings or bowing added)As per the tradition of the era, Bréval composed the Cello solo and the bass line, leaving the chord making up to the performer. This means that there is originally no piano accompaniment part by Bréval. (If you are familiar with any sonata by said composer, it is likley No. 1 in C major, as it appears in volume 4 of a popular method, which is supplied with a piano accompoaniment.) Even so, as many can attest, most sonatas of the Baroque/early Classical periods are beautiful performed with two cellos, or cello duet.In this edition, I have made the notation modern, the layout clean and clear, as well as providing the score of the two original parts and individual parts, labeled Cello 1 and Cello 2. (For those wishing for historical accuracy in part naming Cello 2 should more appropriately be labelled Basso.) I have elevated it to Cello 2 simply to encourage the performance of this excellent set of sonatas with two cellos. I believe they sound very good this way in spite of being traditionally expected to be performed with a chord making instrument like a keyboard in addition to the solo cello and bass instrument. Thus, making it a trio.The Table of contents is the following without being overly detailed (one of the preview pages will have incipits from all six sonatas as is the custom when printing a complete set of pieces in a single volume). Sonata No. 1 in C major Sonata No. 2 in F major Sonata No. 3 in G major Sonata No. 4 in Bb major Sonata No. 5 in A major Sonata No. 6 in D major Each sonata is two movements long. They all have first movements with the customary Sonata Allegro form. The seconds movements vary from RONDOs to Minuets to a set of variations.It is my sincere hope that more of these sonatas be learned and performed as they are not only great learning material, Bréval has crafted each one masterfully.

In this treatment of Psalm 134, all instruments, except the bass trombone, play their entire part in one position or valve combination with a lot of slurs. Attention must be paid to rhythmic accuracy, both at the beginning of notes and their precise ending. For the best effect, a full tenuto is observed, sustaining each note until it either stops or clicks to the next. Not as easy as it looks! The instruments played can be varied; • Voice 1: Trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn in B♠pressing 1-3; or low F-trumpet open. • Voice 2: Trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn in B♠or bugle or clarion. • Voice 3: Alto trombone (4th pos.); an E♠horn, pressing 1 & 2; or natural trumpet in C. • Voice 4: Tenor trombone in 6th pos. or French horn (open in F) or a baritone/euphonium pressing 1-3. • Voice 5: Tenor trombone in 1st pos. or baritone/euphonium open. • Voice 6: Ideally Bass trombone but fits on tuba, tenor trombone/euphonium etc. A standard brass quintet plus one guest could distribute the parts thusly: • Voices 1 & 2: Two trumpets. • Voice 3: Guest on alto trombone, E♠horn or natural trumpet in C. • Voice 4: Horn open in F as 1st trombone. • Voice 5: Trombone as 2nd trombone • Voice 6: Tuba Some tune-up/ ensemble tuning exercises are included. This setting is a mixture of styles described as contre-pointillist; counterpoint in a natural pointillism where the Cantus Firmus and other lines weave between overlapping harmonic series; and diatonic clusters, which at best will remind listeners of a carillon of church bells. Loys Bourgeois' melody for Psalm 134, better known to Anglophones as The Old Hundredth, was added to the Genevan Psalter in 1551. Leading reformist Calvin had commissioned vernacular (spoken language of the people; in this case, French) settings of Psalm melodies for Protestants to sing and the Genevan Psalter was first published in 1539. Subsequent editions added further melodies but some were still used for more than one Psalm. The lesser-known Lausanne Psalter was the first to give each Psalm its own melody. Psalm 134 is associated with Michaelmas (29th September) and Christmas festivities. Enjoy!
