Arranged for Four Guitars by Dan Joneswww.danjonesguitarist.comI have provided a score with notes and TAB, a score with notes only (to facilitate directors' page turns) and all parts with notes and TAB or just notes.L'amour est un oiseau rebelle (Love is a rebellious Bird) or Habanera is one of opera's most popular arias. The melody was actually written by the Spanish musician Sebastián Iradier. Bizet mistakenly believed it to be a folk melody but was quick to credit the original author upon being informed of its origin.  Iradier had a gift for creating popular melodies as he also wrote the beautiful La Paloma. This arrangement employs a variety of timbres and the full range of the instruments. Guitars 3 & 4 are tuned to D and Guitar 1 has the option of playing up to a high A (fret 17), although this passage is equally effective played an octave lower (see note in score). I have provided a score with notes and TAB, a score with notes only (to facilitate directors' page turns) and all parts with notes and TAB or just notes. It became one of the first Bossa Nova compositions to gain popularity outside Brazil, and in the United States, the song is considered to be one of the most important Brazilian Jazz/Bossa songs that helped establish the Bossa Nova movement in the late 1950s. Manhã de Carnaval has become a jazz standard in the U.S. and is performed regularly by musicians around the world in its vocalized version or as an instrumental. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb.Barry and Robin Gibb wrote the song while sitting on a darkened staircase at Polydor Records following a power cut. The song recounts the story of a miner trapped in a cave-in. He is sharing a photo of his wife with a colleague (Mr. Jones) while they hopelessly wait to be rescued. According to the liner notes for their box-set Tales from the Brothers Gibb (1990), this song was inspired by the 1966 Aberfan mining disaster in Wales. According to Robin, there actually had also been a mining disaster in New York in 1939, but not in 1941, and he thought New York sounded more glamourous.In the second and third verses, the lyrical lines get slower and slower, as if to indicate that life is about to end for the miners.The darker sounds of the Flügelhorn, harmonised by the French Horn, depict the dangerous alleys of death miners are facing every day. A potential fatality is lurking every day. The sustained notes of the muted trumpet and the trombone symbolise the sirens and alarms down under - as warning signs. The simple bass drum effect denotes the time that goes by during the unknown and the working pace. The tuba part suggests moving forward, despite the daunting situation.I hope to have captured some of the context and story in this arrangement by a super group. Enjoy!

A very interesting yet quite sad tale goes with this song. An elderly gentleman got in touch and asked if I could write down a Christmas Carol he’d composed. I agreed, and had several visits with him when he sang the carol he’d composed. I wrote it all down, and produced this brass band version (and a vocal one) for him. He came to our band one night to hear what I’d done, and was visibly moved. Sadly, he passed away very soon after this, but at least his daughter Wendy had her carol. It’s a very traditional carol, yet with differences, and would add a new edge to any Christmas concert.
