String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1518635 Composed by Alan Edgar. Romantic Period. 18 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #1092735. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.1518635). WITCHES’ FIREDANCE at BELTANE String quartet. Beltane continues to be observed throughout Ireland and Scotland. The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours. They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians. The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse. The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica. The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

Small Ensemble Drums,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - SKU: A0.802633 Composed by James Johnston Stewart and John Godfrey. Arranged by Thomas Bidgood & Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 22 pages. Peet du Toit #6072097. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802633). A barn dance is any kind of dance involving traditional or folk music with traditional dancing, occasionally held in a barn, but, these days, much more likely to be in any suitable building. The term barn dance is usually associated with family-oriented or community-oriented events, usually for people who do not normally dance. The caller will, therefore, generally use easy dances so that everyone can join in.A barn dance can be a ceilidh (gathering), with traditional Irish or Scottish dancing, and people unfamiliar with either format often confuse the two terms. However, a barn dancecan also feature square dancing, contra dancing, English country dance, dancing to country and western music, or any other kind of dancing, often with a live band and a caller. Modern western square dance is often confused with barn dancing in Britain.Barn dances, as social dances, were popular in Ireland until the 1950s, and were typically danced to tunes with 44 rhythms. This one is dedicated to my one brother-in-law, Ken Bain, a Scott. He is a great person with a beautiful voice and even a more beautiful heart. Congrats on your wee birthday, Heavy, and may you have many more Scottish barn dances!

Brass Ensemble Euphonium - Level 3 - SKU: A0.813923 Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Christmas,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 15 pages. Regis Bookshar #6615143. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813923). Euphonium Octet - Advanced/Intermediate - . This marvelous arrangement of the Russian Dance from Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's extremely popular, The Nutcracker Suite, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts and recitals but would be most appropriate during the Holiday season. This selection has been arranged to keep all of the intensity and excitement of the original composition and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (15 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act ballet with a score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video. The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on March 19, 1892. The suite became instantly popular with almost every number encored at its premiere.Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could also have the opportunity to play some of these wonderful compositions, originally scored for a full orchestra, and has arranged two of the selections, the popular March and the Russian Dance, one of the character dances, based on the Russian and Ukrainian folk dance, Trepak, for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. So, in addition to this version of the Russian Dance, for a Euphonium Octet, written in Treble Clef, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection for various Quintets and Octets and are readily available. A version written in Bass Clef, is also available, if you prefer. If you should decide to purchase this arrangement of the Russian Dance, I would highly encourage you to also consider purchasing the arrangement of the March as well. Scheduling the March followed by the Russian Dance would be a very satisfying addition to any concert or recital. Please take the time to look for other versions of these compositions. You may find something else that might also suit your needs.I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as there are numerous selections in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I'm certain that this wonderful arrangement of the Russian Dance from Tchaikovsky's marvelous holiday fav.

5 saxophones (SAATBar) - intermediate - SKU: S9.Q40419 Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Albert Loritz. This edition: score and parts. Quintett - Saxophon - Tänze. Downloadable, Score and parts. Advance Music GmbH - Digital #Q40419. Published by Advance Music GmbH - Digital (S9.Q40419). Key: G minor. German.Brahms’ Hungarian Dances are among the most popular compositions in the field of light classical music with dance no. 5 probably being the most well-known one of the altogether 21 pieces of the cycle. It is this dance the arrangement for saxophone quintet at hand is based on. Answers to the questions to what extent Brahms incorporated traditional Hungarian melodies into these pieces or whether the dances represent original creations of his own written in a “Hungarian style†might be found in specialist literature or on the internet. These sources may also be consulted to get further information on the history of origins of these compositions. The original version of the Fifth Hungarian Dance for Piano Four-Hands published in 1869 is written in F# minor. For most of the arrangements (for orchestra and for any other conceivable type of ensemble) created thereafter in rapid succession - but also for this present version written for saxophone quartet – the key of G minor was chosen. The markings for tempo and dynamics included are based on the original composition but also take into account certain performance practices. The individual voices take turns in executing the main melody. The brackets appearing in the score and in the individual parts mark the beginning and the end of those passages where the respective instrument takes the lead. The arrangement for quintet at hand can be performed soloistically or in chorus.

Small Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.522161 Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Instructional,Renaissance. Score and parts. 4 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #3928085. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522161). By the time Michael Praetorius published his extensive dance collection entitled Terpsichore (terp-SIH-cory) in 1612, he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany. These two Voltas are well-known and lively dances and sure to add some sparkle to any event. This piece is arranged for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments and percussion, with optional keyboard part. The first Volta uses interesting and catchy syncopation, giving the impression that it’s in duple time time but it’s written in triple time.In this series, Renaissance Hits for Wind Instruments, some of the most well-known dances from Terpsichore are included. They are all attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts or end-of-semester events. They are fairly easy to play too. The flexible arrangement makes them playable by all sorts of non-standard ensembles. The keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments. This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. The optional keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible the keyboard player should improvise around the part and chords shown. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a hand-held drum, clave or small headless tambourine. Two players are usually required and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Other percussion instruments may be added as desired. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that. Â

Level 3 - SKU: A0.1133711 By Various. By Anonymous, Giorgio Mainerio, Michael Praetorius, Pierre Attaignant, Pierre Certon, Pierre Phalese, and Tielman Susato. Arranged by Alastair Lodge. Early Music,Folk,Historic,Medieval,Renaissance. 50 pages. Wold Meridian #733808. Published by Wold Meridian (A0.1133711). This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to the Dance Masters which presented 44 of my favourite Renaissance Dance band tunes and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited 22 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. What is more, by contrasting the melody and chords with the full scoring, it should be possible to work some light and shade into performances. You can hear all the pieces and their chords on YouTube together with contemporary art and historical background material:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYRWH2nycMkMoIoEYEMVPa_EXY6NVDpNSAs a help to those less confident in playing harmony lines, I have provided links to playlists of videos online for each part of each piece. You will hear the selected line on its own with chords and percussion, with the melody line added on repeats. The final repeat includes the other harmony lines, but the featured line is slightly louder in the mix. The performance starts with a percussion beat introduction to set the tempo.Who were the Publishers and the Dance Masters? What did they do? Sometime around the 1500s, the popularity of dance music exploded in Europe. Dance Masters were collecting chansons and dance tunes from courts and rural parts and were teaching these to new audiences, spreading their arrangements and reflecting the performance styles of the areas from which they had collected the tunes. Publishers were able to take these tunes that were becoming known across the regions and nations and spread them even more widely, thanks to technological innovations in music printing which made it quicker and therefore cheaper to produce collections of these dances in four or more parts. These publishers were often highly accomplished composers in their own right, who were both able to provide distinctive harmony lines and compose new tunes in the style of their sources, feeding the courts with enduring tunes. Composers and printers of this time would often use note values that are double the length of those we would be used to seeing today, and so to make this version more readable, breves have become semibreves or whole notes, semibreves have become minims or half notes and so on. Working with this publication For those just starting out in Early Music, the volume is an ideal introduction, since the ensemble can build from a soloist with accompaniment with the chords alone, and parts can be added in as additional musicians become available. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints. The range of each part is quite limited, and though the harmonies may seem strange at times, key signatures are kind to the less experienced musician. If enthusiasm takes hold, then reproductions of early music instruments are sold by some very talented makers, as well as coming up on auction sites. Otherwise, it is possible to put together a fairly convincing ensemble with recorders, violins, a cello and mandolins, bouzoukis, flutes or guitars and gradually introduce the authentic instruments as they become available.

Small Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.522175 Composed by Pierre Phalèse. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christmas,Holiday,Renaissance,Wedding. Score and parts. 26 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6088861. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522175). Pierre Phalèse (1510-1575) was a Flemish publisher and his First Book of Dances, an extensive collection of dances in four parts, was published in Leuven in 1571. They are attractive pieces and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the pavane and gaillarde were both popular dances and frequently paired. These are the third and fourth paired dances in the original publication. This arrangement is scored for virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments and percussion, with optional keyboard part. The flexible arrangement makes them playable by all sorts of non-standard ensembles. The optional keyboard part enables you to use the piece as a solo or duet and trio for mixed instruments. This 4-part arrangement is presented in a single PDF file which includes the Full Score; Part 1 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 2 (C, B flat, E flat); Part 3 (C, F, B flat, E flat), Part 4 (C, B flat, E flat); Keyboard and Percussion. A piano sounds distinctly out of place in this music and a digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and two players are usually required. Other percussion instruments may be added as desired. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

Fl. Afl. (guit/kbd) - Intermediate-Advanced - SKU: F2.FM628 Composed by Alexandra Lehmann. A set of dances for flute and alto flute duet. Score. 6 pages. Forton Music - Digital #FM628. Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM628). ISBN 9790570485277.'Plateau of Dances with a Scottish Flavour' Plateau of Dances with a Scottish Flavour was composed in autumn 2016, Eastbourne, and is inspired by my childhood in Doune, Perthshire; as well as the Ceilidhs and Feis (cultural festival in the Highlands) my daughter, Clara, and I were immersed in when we lived in the picturesque village of Kingussie, Badenoch and Strathspey. The four dances are a celebration of my love and nostalgia for Scotland, and an expression of my family's Scottish memories. Each dance comes with a quote from my favourite poet, Robert Burns, whose insightful and sensitive observations are a poignant appreciation of everyday life. Why the reference to Scottish food? Because this piece is dedicated to my father, Papou, who appreciates a merry supper. The 1st Movement, 'To the Mighty Haggis', is a Strathspey with its characteristic Scotch snap -a short-long rhythm, as if saying the word 'haggis'; which is fitting as the Scottish bard's quote comes from his poem Address to a Haggis, traditionally said on Burns' Night. The 2nd Movement, 'The Humble Shortbread', is a Reel; as is usually the case in Scottish dances. It should be played with a slightly 'snappy', swung rhythm. 'What though on homely fare we dine, [...] A man is a man for all that' comes from my favourite Burns' poem: A Man's a Man for A' That. And who doesn't enjoy the humble shortbread? There is a more reflective, nostalgic mood to the 3rd Movement, 'Ode to the Homely (salty) Porridge'. The Air is a reminiscence of the quiet evenings Clara and I would spend in Kingussie, with our view of the beautifully haunting mountains. 'What will I get to my supper, [...] Ye'se get a panfu' o' plumpin parridge' comes from Burns' The Shepherd's Wife who tries to entice her husband back home with the promise of porridge (the Scottish way: with salt). Finally, the 4th Movement, 'Too Many Drams of Whisky', is a cheerful and lively Jig. It's the convivial merriness of being with friends and family, maybe at a Ceilidh, with a wink to Scotland's 'water of life'. 'We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne' comes from Burns' famous Auld Lang Syne: a fitting end to our musical and culinary tour of Scotland.

Published by David McKeown (A0.588914). Mambo de Maya is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Cor Anglais or English Horn. This duet is based on the fast, traditional Latin style of Mambo that emerged in Cuba in the 1930s. Later, when Mambo and its dance steps spread to Mexico and New York, hugely successful band leaders like Perez Prado and Tito Puente borrowed ideas from Big-Band Jazz and produced the bold and brassy sound we associate with Mambo today. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The steady Mambo bell rhythm is implied throughout, and following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the style. Melodies are clearly articulated and played with passion. Mambo de Maya has a performance time of around two and a half minutes at full tempo. You can listen to a full performance the Clarinet version of this duet by following the YouTube link above. There are many more top quality arrangements and compositions by David McKeown for you to browse at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/david-mckeown/6203

Score and parts. 12 pages. Peet du Toit #6200345. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802654). First of May is a song by the Bee Gees with lead vocals by Barry Gibb, released as a single from their 1969 double album Odessa. The song was first recorded in Atlantic Studios in New York and was continued in IBC Studios, London. Barry said in the booklet with Tales from the Brothers Gibb that the title of the song came from the birthday of his dog, Barnaby. Maurice recalled the session in which that song came about. Barry and I were sitting at the piano, he said, And I started playing the chords, and Barry started singing, 'When I was small and Christmas trees were tall' and I started singing along with it. We put a demo down with a vocal and we kept the piano track. Went back to England, and went into IBC Studios in London, added onto that piano track and Barry's vocal stayed on as well. We had a choir and an orchestra all on this one piano. This song was initially taped in demo form in New York City on 16 August 1968.The orchestral arrangement from maestro Bill Shepherd was featured on the second chorus. The song starts with a piano on the first verse and chorus. Shepherd's orchestra was featured in second verse and second chorus. After singing the second chorus, the singer repeated the first verse. The music was stopped when he sings don't ask me why, but time has passed us by, Someone else moved in from far away.It was quite a challenge to arrange such subtle music for a brass quintet. I am very pleased with the result though. Enjoy!

Score and individual part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3535033. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549777). Duration: ca 1:00 Score: 5 pages, Solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Short but fascinating Chinese Dance from the Nutcracker Suite. Program this for a recital encore or Christmas pageant. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

This arrangement is set for Carillon, however it may also be played on piano, organ, or electronic keyboard or adapted to other instruments. It is a transcription of piano music by Béla Bartók adapted to the range and tonalities of a carillon. The pieces in Volume 1 are based on Hungarian Folk Songs. This piece is scored for one carillon with two performers.I use the following story to explain how this piece is written:Imagine yourself traveling through the Hungarian countryside about 100 years ago. You are in an open carriage or on horseback. As you travel, you begin to hear broken strains of music from somewhere up ahead. As you get closer, more of the melody is heard. You reach the location of the music performance and pause to watch and listen to The Swineherd's Dance. After a few minutes you realize you must be on your way. As you continue your travels, the music fades out in the distance behind you..

Traditional English Melody The 'contemplation' section of this arrangement evokes the sedate mood of many of the hymn texts with which it is associated; the random ringing, singing bells and mellow tone of the handchimes all contribute to the soothing effect. The 'dance' section introduces a more celebratory mood, with a quicker tempo, featuring the use of mallets, Ring Touch and Martellato techniques plus optional hand drum. In addition a Flute part which enhances both sections may be added.
