25 jazz etudes is a book aimed at intermediate jazz students wanting something authentic to play over well known jazz standards.
It has long been recognised that to develop jazz vocabulary we should copy the masters of the music but what if our favourite player is simply too advanced for where we currently are in our musical development?
The 25 jazz etudes have been created with limited tricky passages, no high sustained playing but still uses great, authentic vocabulary.

This playful arrangement of Lullaby of Birdland by George Shearing (concert Ab) for voice and 3 horn ( alto sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and drums ) is unique from many arrangements of this jazz standard by weaving complimentary melodies around the vocal melody, giving this piece a welcome breath of fresh air. The 10-bar intro has a rhythmic push in the piano reminiscent of Jamiroquai’s Virtual Insanity that intensifies the listener’s anticipation to hear the first few notes of this familiar tune in a new and unique context. Returning back to the head via a simple D.S. enables instrumentalists to easily focus on solos rather than the form. The 2-bar rhythm-section outro concludes the piece precisely and cleanly and takes the listener back to the time when jazz bands were first cooking up storms on the dance floors. Though cited with tempo at a quarter note = 160 bpm, this arrangement works well at any bpm between 140 and 170.Other than for the introduction and the ending, the piano part includes chords and rhythmic notation throughout for easy improvisation. The bass part includes both an intermediate-advanced written part and chords throughout, thus accommodating bassists at all skill levels and/or those who would prefer to play a combination of written and improvised bass lines. The drum chart is to be improvised throughout; however, it includes suggested rhythmic ideas and indicates key points in the arrangement such as horn hits, repeats, and fills. PLEASE NOTE: For ease of identifying parts, the forthcoming audio clip furnishes a piano playing the vocal melody. The piano chart does not include the melody. About the Arranger: Serena Rose is a professional musician who performs weekly in the greater Los Angeles area. She has a master's in music composition and has composed three large works for the Orange Coast College Wind Ensemble as well as various smaller ensembles based in Los Angeles.

A visual stereogram represents a 3-D image while looking though a pair of 2-D images. There are special viewers that are used to give this effect where two images viewed through the special device can give a 3-D or stereographic effect. Brubeck's Stereograms for Bass Clef Instruments are musical versions of the graphic form. Brubeck uses familiar folk melodies to create his Stereograms and adds jazzy twists to many of them. The musical version may contain two or three individual parts within a single melodic line, thus the musical 3-D Stereogram is created. Bach’s unaccompanied works have underlying multiple parts in them and Brubeck has been inspired by the Master to create a similar texture in these works. They are suitable encore pieces or performance pieces, alone or grouped into ad hoc suites. Brubeck’s music requires rhythmic accuracy and multiple tonal colors, and are especially useful as sight reading tools to keep the performer sharp and on his/her toes. He has also added octave suggestions to allow them to be playable by the widest array of bass clef instruments Each Stereogram is dedicated to a special musical hero in Brubeck’s life. Excellent as study etudes or sight-reading pieces, Stereograms can be performed/practiced by Trombonists, Bass Trombonists, Tubists and Euphoniumists. It appears on the Talking Book album along with Superstition. It was nominated for both Grammy Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and ultimately won the Grammy award for best male vocal, although there are other vocalists on the start of the track. The harmonies are both lush and jazzy and the melody line jumps around in the second section. Throughout the performance the rhythms need to be tight and precise, yet also with a laid back quality to the syncopations - don't rush! This arrangement is mostly in 3 parts apart from the coda, where the men can split into tenor and bass parts, and the piano accompaniment can be altered to suit, though an electric piano tone like the recording would work well. The arrangement would suit an intermediate mixed adult or school choir, and there is a vocal score included to help reduce the number of pages for the choir.

The piece is in concert F major establishing the bright swingy rhythm, this then flows into the second section which is more lyrical and legato and is in E flat major.A short bridge section follows keeping the motif's heard in the first section but exploring the lower registers and remains largely legato. The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind.Full score 13 pages-parts 4 pages. 4 mins 30 in length.
