Love Theme from ST ELMO'S FIRE - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarDerek Hasted writes This charming instrumental was the Love Theme from the film “St. Elmo’s Fire” and it makes a lovely guitar ensemble item for a concert. It will suit a quartet or a larger ensemble.My arrangement is just a semitone lower than the original and moves the piece to a familiar and comfortable set of notes for the intermediate player.There is limited Left Hand fingering - whilst the lower parts remain in first position much of the time, the upper parts go up the neck. Players confident up the neck might stay up there, but less experienced players might want to return to more familiar territory as soon as possible, so please add the fingering that works for you.The original has the luxury of instruments with long sustain, and with contrasting tone colours. In order to make sure that the tune cuts through, be sure to listen to those around you…The whole piece is here, lasting 5 minutes or so. I’ve taken the theme from the closing soundtrack version, where the melody is clear and powerful. My arrangement includes one or two little bits of Mark Knopfler’s quasi-improvised variations on the tune. Note that the guitar part is played with a Capo on the first fret so that both players can enjoy an accessible key signature. The guitar part goes up the neck, and the position numbers are relative to the Capo (ie one fret higher than if there was no Capo fitted).There are two arrangements here - one in the husky low register of the sax, to suit a less experienced player, and one an octave higher that has a few challenging notes at the top, but sings out in a gloriously powerful way. ISBN 9790570483808.Brass 4 All This piece was inspired by the brass section of the WNO, the importance of 'Music For All', and the need to make it accessible to children. A stately introduction opens the piece, with all the instruments passing the theme between them. This leads into a the main body of the piece, a bold, driving tune that contrasts with a more lyrical middle section before bursting out into fanfares of repeated notes to bring the music to a thrilling finish. Brass Neck The tuba is featured prominently in ths piece. The repeated motif drives the rhythm forward: 'Cry the tears for the freezing years. Just walk away' ... as the other players finally do. Marked Andantino and in Bb major the central section changes to Bb minor, where the horn and trombone carry the melody. This is then taken up be the second trumpet and the players stand as the music modulates back to Bb major. As each player finishes they sit down until the tuba is left to finish alone. Autumn Breeze A sultry September evening and a gentle breeze fans the last of the fading flowers. The family are gathered informally, and the music begins.... Marked Andante and with flowing descending quavers, the opening has interest for every player. The horn and then the trombone pick up the central theme, and this is then embellished by the trumpets. A gentle phrase marks the ending. Bankers Notes A letter drops on the mat. A final demand and the thought of the 'green paper rotting in their clutch' assails my mind. I write notes of a differnt kind! The opening is marked Vivace and is rather punchy, but soon settles into the main theme with driving rhythms throughout. The extended ending climaxes in rising staccato semiquavers for all.

Based on a simple repeating chord sequence, this is a powerful piece of music and fits classical guitar so very well. Extending across three and a quarter octaves, there's a big sound, a strong melody, a hypnotic countermelody and a pulsing rhythm. When a version of this arrangement was played by Hampshire Guitar Orchestra it always went down a storm.Ideal for a school concert or for an adult concert's closing item or encore.The parts vary from the easy side of intermediate up to advanced intermediate, and it's perfect for a mixed ability sextet or large ensemble.Guitar 1 has some 8va phrases - these need to be taken right up the neck so they top the wall of sound - the 8va is simply to aid reading.Guitar 6 is supplied in both treble and bass clefs - either or both can be played. INTERMEZZO (Cavalleria Rusticana) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLEFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes The opera Cavalleria Rusticana opened on 17 May 1890 in Rome to a half empty house. However, the audience included not only the most authoritative music critics in the country but also Queen Margherita, a great music lover. It was a success from its opening notes. Following Stagno's rendition of the Siciliana behind the curtain the audience leaped to their feet with a thunderous applause not heard for many years. Mascagni took 40 curtain calls.The intermezzo is an orchestra interlude that most people recognise, that far fewer can name, and virtually no-one can identify the composer. My arrangement was inspired by hearing the original orchestral version at the funeral of Bill, a fellow guitarist, and this is my tribute to him - an arrangement for 4 guitars.In order to make the very best of the compass of the guitar, I’ve had to change to pitch a little, but it makes it all the more playable.The tempo is slow - really slow and relaxed. I’ve not added fingering, because although much can be played in low positions, you may well find that there is plenty of time to take much of the piece up the neck, where the guitar really comes alive.I hope you enjoy performing this!

CAVATINA for Bb CLARINET and GUITARFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes The beautifully melodic Cavatina was made famous by John Williams, who arranged the piece for solo guitar and produced some effortless recordings of it. Audiences equate effortless with easy, but it can be a bit of a beast to play well.Why this arrangement?I’ve lowered the key by a semitone which makes many of the chords sound more mellow.I’ve fixed the ungainly jumps in the bass line which came as a constraint of playing up the neck on solo guitar.I’ve improved the connectivity of the middle voices from chord to chord so the chord changes sound more effortless and natural.By virtue of the key change and careful use of enharmonic equivalents, the guitar part is now on familiar ground.A side effect is that everything is easier and the sustain seems more effortless.The Guitar is Capo 1, so that the clarinet and guitar are both in comfortable keys.I also have versions for two guitars - to find them easily, visit my website (below) and look for my list of guitar duets.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

PERFECT DAY (Lou Reed) - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarThe original is in the guitar-hostile key of 5 and 2 flats, but my arrangement of this classic is in D minor and D major. As well as being built from familiar shapes, it sits well on the guitar neck.It's a popular wedding piece, and rightly so.The first verses and chorus feature a low tune, which needs to sing like a cello to cut through the higher notes in the accompaniment. In the repeat, the tune comes up an octave and the accompaniment dips down lower to make a real contrast, and add a real sense of “build” to the piece.Where they work well, I’ve included the little motifs that feature on the piano and strings in the official audio release.I’ve not loaded the piece with dynamics - but please be sure to add dynamics that work for you, so you make this “your performance”.Guitar 4 is tuned to 6=D, and the same part is also supplied in bass clef (without the need to tune down).
