Bass Flute,Instrumental Solo,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.549731 Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Multicultural,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and individual part. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #3531443. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549731). Duration: ca. 7:00, Score: 12 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano: 7 pages. An epic choice for a recital or funeral. Fauré Background In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend.  Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

Arranged by Rob Bushnell. 20th Century,Blues,Classical,Jazz. Brass Band. 137 pages. RBMusic #756642. Published by RBMusic (A0.1156327). First performed by the composer at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York in 1926, the Piano Preludes (or Three Preludes) are a collection of short pieces by George Gershwin, show casing early-20th-century American classical music, as influenced by jazz. Gershwin originally planned to compose 24 preludes, wrote 7, performed only 6 publically and was further reduced to 3 when first published. The work was dedicated to friend and musical advisor Bill Daly. The first prelude begins with a five-note blues motif. It features syncopated rhythms based on the Brazilian baião and minor-seventh chords throughout. The second prelude, which Gershwin said was a sort of blues lullaby consists of two sections: the first a lazy melody upon a steady beat of crotchets; the second the bass takes the melody, continuing with the steady beats. The third prelude was called Spanish by Gershwin, and features a question-and-answer type melody, starting in a minor tonality and ending in major one. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. A recording of the original composition can be found here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soEUH4H7gog.

Level 4 - SKU: A0.1471113 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary,Folk,Instructional. 25 pages. Robert A. Howard #1048757. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1471113). Mirage Sextet is a single movement work, and is scored for a mixed chamber ensemble of clarinet (in A), bassoon, piano, violin, viola and cello. The work focuses on an exploration of the octatonic scale on C, in the semitone-tone variant. The piece has a loose ternary feel, as the outer sections present primary material and main themes that recur. Meanwhile, a middle section offers some contrast in a succession of mini cadenza-style solos for most of the instruments. The work develops 20th century folk-influenced idioms, such as those of Bartok, Kodaly, early Lutoslawski and Ligeti, as well as Stravinsky, Shostakovich and perhaps even Messiaen. The main compositional interests are: changing, as well as irregular, time signatures; the aforementioned octatonic scale to create folk-like motifs and melodies, added-note harmonies (with the importance of the augmented fourth interval); and percussive doublings of instruments in their lower (gritty/folky) registers, in octaves, as well as liberal actual doubling by the piano. The work is generally accessible to performers and audience. The attached document is the score only, with audio for reference.Duration: 8 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Bassoon,Clarinet,Double Bass,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1311675 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Chamber,Romantic Period. 69 pages. RayThompsonMusic #900670. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1311675). Arranged wind dectet/bass (double wind quintet)The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. The movements of the suite are:Praeludium (Allegro vivace)Sarabande (Andante)Gavotte (Allegretto)Air (Andante religioso)Rigaudon (Allegro con brio)The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neoclassicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.Although it is not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit. I have reduced the tempi in both the prelude and rigaudon. This makes it more playable as a wind player, but still maintains the musicality of the piece. The prelude is quite a long blow for a wind player, and is quite a challenge.

Published by Paul Burnell (A0.835903). Carolina Fox Trot by Will Vodery, arranged by Paul Burnell for instruments in four parts.Download comprises both score and partsDuration 3:00 Score in C The arrangement is suitable for multiple quartet combinations with parts available (and potential instrumentations suggested) as follows:Part 1: C, Eb (Flute, Oboe, Alto Recorder, Eb Clarinet, Violin 1)Part 2: C, Bb, G (Alto Flute, Oboe, Tenor Recorder, Bb Clarinet, Violin 2)Part 3: C, Bb, Eb, F (Bb Clarinet, Bass Recorder, Alto Saxophone, Horn in F, Violin 3, Viola)Part 4: C, Bb, F (Bassoon, Great bass Recorder, Tenor Saxophone, Horn in F, 'Cello)Part 4 may be played or doubled an octave lower than written - using the 'Bass Clef up 8' part.Any other appropriate instruments, even if not suggested above, may play.Play cue-sized notes in brackets where main notes are out of range or inconvenient. The final section of Vodery's original piano score includes instructions to 'clap hands' and 'knock on piano with knuckles'. This arrangement includes similar instructions for the same bars, indicated by x noteheads. The final four bars of this arrangement are not in the original composition and may be omitted.'Carolina Fox Trot' was recorded by the Victor Military Band on 13 October 1914 with the Victor recording label ledgers noting: 34 bars per minute, equivalent to 68 bpm. A recording by the Pathé Dance Orchestra in late 1914-early 1915 appears to be at a faster tempo - reflected in this arrangement. Programme note:'Carolina Fox Trot' was written by US composer and arranger Will H. Vodery and published as a piano piece in 1914, with a sub-title 'New One Step', and with a front cover description: New Society Dance - Originated by Billy Kent & Jeanette Warner - America's Classiest Dancers. It is possible that the title of the piece was intended to be just 'Carolina', with 'Fox Trot' being a descriptive subtitle. The Fox Trot emerged as a new popular dance in 1914, and was initially danced to ragtime music. Will Vodery is perhaps best known for the vocal and choral arrangements that he created for the original Broadway stage production of the classic musical 'Show Boat' (1927).

RayThompsonMusic #6352591. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553956). Gabriel Pierné was born in Metz. His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition). He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties). This arrangement is taken from his album of 6 short pieces: originally written for piano, and later transcribed by him, for small orchestra (English Translation: Album for my little friends (Children)Movts are:Pastorale FarandoleLa Veillée de l'ange gardien (The vigil of the Guardian Angel)Petite gavotteChanson d'autrefois (Song of olden times)Marche des petits soldats de plomb (March of the Lead Soldiers)Arranged for double wind quintet and bass.

Program note: I met Brian Calhoon when he performed at a Boston Conservatory of Music recital featuring students of marimba godhead, Nancy Zeltsman. This was a few years ago … A year ago, I noticed that Brian had started a percussion ensemble with some friends called the Boston Percussion Group. I have always been fascinated with John Cage’s early explorations with percussion instruments: First, Second and Third Constructions; Imaginary Landscape Nos 1, 2 & 3; etc. These percussion pieces eventually led to his invention of the prepared piano. Brian and I got together one day for lunch last fall, and I asked him if he would be interested if I wrote a piece for his group. He said, Yes!!! Percussion Quartet is in six movements. 1 Back beat … Moderato. 2 Arioso … Moderato. 3 Funk march … Moderato. 4 Nachtmusik I … Adagio. 5 Fast and furious … Presto. 6 Nachtmusik II … Moderato Enjoy!!! Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869266). Instrumentation: Alto sax solo and orchestra, 2222-4231-perc-drum set-strings Program note. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. The second movement is a boss nova: as in the Stan Getz album, Grace does not have a written part but improvises over a set of chord changes provided by the orchestra. The third and last movement is an Afro-Cuban groove in six-eight: Grace has a written melody at first but soon launches into improvisation on a 12-bar blues in F. She ends the concerto in a free cadenza to show off her virtuosity and saxophone chops. ENJOY!!!

Arranged double wind quintet/bass and optional percussion. Background info:Parade is a ballet choreographed by Leonide Massine, with music by Erik Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau. The ballet was composed in 1916–17 for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The ballet premiered on Friday, May 18, 1917, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso, choreography by Léonide Massine (who danced), and the orchestra conducted by Ernest Ansermet. The ballet was remarkable for several reasons. It was the first collaboration between Satie and Picasso, and also the first time either of them had worked on a ballet, thus making it the first time either collaborated with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. The plot of Parade incorporated and was inspired by popular entertainments of the period, such as Parisian music-halls and American silent-films.Much of the settings used in Parade's plot occurred outside of the formal Parisian theater, depicting the streets of Paris. The plot reproduces various elements of everyday life such as the music hall and fairground. Before Parade, the use of popular entertainment materials was considered unsuitable for the elite world of the ballet. The plot of Parade composed by Cocteau includes the failed attempt of a troupe of performers to attract audience members to view their show. Some of Picasso's Cubist costumes were in solid cardboard, allowing the dancers only a minimum of movement. The score contained several noise-making instruments (typewriter, foghorn, an assortment of bottles, pistol, and so on), which had been added by Cocteau (somewhat to the dismay of Satie). It is supposedthat such additions by Cocteau showed his eagerness to create a succès de scandale, comparable to that of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps which had been premiered by the Ballets Russes some years before, and caused no less scandal.Although Parade was quite revolutionary, bringing common street entertainments to the elite, being scorned by audiences and being praised by critics, nonetheless many years later Stravinsky could still pride himself in never having been topped in the matter of succès de scandale. The ragtime contained in Parade would later be adapted for piano solo and attained considerable success as a separate piano piece. The finale is a rapid ragtime dance in which the whole cast [makes] a last desperate attempt to lure the audience in to see their showThe premiere of the ballet resulted in a number of scandals. One faction of the audience booed, hissed, and was very unruly, nearly causing a riot before they were drowned out by enthusiastic applause. Many of their objections were focused on Picasso's cubist design, which was met with cries of sale boche.Prestidigitateur chinois (Chinese Conjuror) is no 1 in the ballet, and includes some of the odd percussion : sirens in addition to normal orchestral perc. The piece can be performed without percussion....but the percussion gives it an extra something!!
